Smith for Edwards
Given both team's desire to rid themselves of these two quality players, and the Saints in need of a veteran LB with a great deal of leadership and proven track record...and the Chargers in need of a playmaking safety to fit into their relatively young defensive backfield, why doesnt this trade make sense?

If Smith is moved I hope we get at least that much value or more for him. A main issue why the bolts have not gotten substantial trade offers for Edwards that it is assumed he could be an outright cut. Why pay anything when you can get him for free? Kinda like McNair to the Ravens but on an even lower scale. So, Edwards and a draft pick would seem fairer if less feasible. The Chargers might just be asking too much.

Well, if he gets cut he can choose where he wants to go and you can bet that there will be several teams lining up to get him. A trade assures us getting him...if they are deadset on moving Smith, they might as well get a starting LB in return. Him being on the open market really makes the chances of him signing here slim.

Smith will not be cut this year. it would be a stupid move. The first payton has done. I like Bennett for Edwards better. Chargers could use a backup RB

Edwards is on the outs in SD. There is serious conflict between Schottenheimer and AJ Smith. I posted in another thread how someone talked to Loomis at the crawfish boil and he said Brees talked to Edwards and Edwards wanted to come here. That person then went up to Brees and asked if he was trying to get Edwards here and Brees replied "How did you know that?" So, don't count out Edwards as a free agent. I'm all for him but we do need a Mike a lot more at this point. I like Smith's play too. But if he is going to go it would be nice to see maximum return on moving him.

Couldnt agree more...i dont want to see Smith traded, but it appears thats the way things are looking so if it does happen, lets get a starting LB in return.
|
Bennett for Edwards?????? That's not close to fair. Starting LB for backup RB? We need to improve the LB corps badly, and we have DBs to spare. D. Smith is on the trading block for a reason, and if we can swing a deal for Edwards and him, I say do it. Payton wants to bring his own guys here, and D. Smith isn't one of the untouchables that Haz brought in.

Dwight Smith in the prime of his career for a LB on his last legs?
