Brooks held a workout for pro scouts on June 22 at the University of Virginia. On a 96-degree day and the heat index up at 110, Brooks ran on AstroTurf and worked out on grass that was dried-out. Bengals linebacker coach Ricky Hunley conducted the workout. There were representatives from 31 teams at the workout, with only the Vikings not in attendance. Mike Nolan from the 49ers was the only head coach there. He was joined by San Francisco VP of player personnel Scot McCloughan. He ran three times, timed at 4.68, 4.75 and 4.74 in the 40, with 10-yard splits of 1.53, 1.58 and 1.58 and 20-yard splits of 2.73, 2.75 and 2.75. His arm span measured 33ÃƒÂ‚Ã‚Â½ inches and his hands measured 9ÃƒÂ‚Ã‚Â½. He had a 32-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-8 long jump, a 4.43 short shuttle, an 11.84 long shuttle, a 7.43 three-cone drill and 19 benches. The conditions were not really good, just average.

The day before the workout, Brooks met with John Dorsey and Reggie McKenzie (GB), had a meeting with Ricky Hunley (CIN) and had dinner with Jerry Reese (NYG).

Brooks, who played linebacker in college but might project as a Julius Peppers-type defensive end in the pros, missed six games with a right knee injury last year. He visited Dr. James Andrews on June 12 for the knee to be examined and that report was made available to all NFL teams.

Brooks' father, Perry Brooks, was a defensive tackle whom New England drafted in Round 7 in 1976. He never played for New England but played 92 games for Washington.

He will continue to work out under Chip Smith in Atlanta.

Slower than a lot of people thought he was... which is average. I was watching the NFL Network and they said whoever bids a third rounder will probably get the guy.

If the Patriots have a serious interest in former Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks, an entrant in the July 13 supplemental draft, theyÃƒÂ¢Ã¢Â‚Â¬Ã¢Â„Â¢re holding their cards awfully close to the vest.

According to agent Greg Williams, approximately 40 officials representing 22 teams attended BrooksÃƒÂ¢Ã¢Â‚Â¬Ã¢Â„Â¢ pro day on the Charlottesville, Va., campus yesterday.

The Patriots were not among them.

Had they been, the team may have had some concerns allayed, primarily with BrooksÃƒÂ¢Ã¢Â‚Â¬Ã¢Â„Â¢ weight.

With rumors swirling that the linebacker pushed 290 pounds over the offseason, Brooks tipped the scales at an even 260 yesterday, which is the weight UVA listed him at last fall. And he may have dropped a few more after the workout, as temperatures on the field soared to 110 degrees.

Brooks - who played in a Patriots-like 3-4 as an inside linebacker under Bill BelichickÃƒÂ¢Ã¢Â‚Â¬Ã¢Â„Â¢s old staffmate Al Groh - managed to clock his first 40, depending on whoÃƒÂ¢Ã¢Â‚Â¬Ã¢Â„Â¢s stopwatch you were eyeing, between 4.53 and 4.59. He posted his second dash at around 4.68.

So, this guy says the Pats weren't there, and had some good times for his size. Conflicting reports.

What about Junior College linebacker Dave Dixon? I don't know a great deal about him, but he is listed as one of four prospects, who are currently signed up for the Supplemental Draft. He currently has 7 scouts planning to watch his workout in nearby Beaumont, TX.

His physical attributes are off the charts... throw a 6th rounder at Dixon and see what that'll do. Low risk high reward.

I think he's a bad guy. He's had NUMEROUS character issues. He's obviously a talent, but unless we pay him the minimum money with incentives to make him actually work hard, I don't want him here.
