Saints and Bush to sign deal today
Contract reportedly runs 6 years and could total $62 million

Monday, July 31, 2006
By Jimmy Smith

JACKSON, MISS. -- The contract has been finalized, but the recipient of the six-year deal, which could total nearly $62 million with more than $26 million guaranteed, won't arrive in Jackson to sign it until 3:15 this afternoon.

Saints running back Reggie Bush likely won't participate in his first training camp practice until Tuesday morning, when the team is scheduled to have a special-teams session before a full-pads workout Tuesday afternoon.

Bush's agent, Joel Segal, arrived at Millsaps College on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. to meet with his counterpart in the negotiations, Russ Ball, and with Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis.

It took much of the afternoon and evening for Segal and Ball, a senior football administrator for the Saints, to review the terminology in the contract so that it could be prepared for Bush's signature.

The precise terms of the contract won't be available until after Bush signs.

Bush will leave Los Angeles today on a 6 a.m. flight via Atlanta. Part of the delay in his departure stemmed from Bush not having packed because he apparently thought the negotiations might drag on longer.

He was still packing Sunday night.

Loomis: 'I'm excited'

Loomis on Sunday said he thought it was possible to get a deal done quickly, and talks intensified after Thursday's news that Tennessee had signed Vince Young, the third player chosen in the NFL draft, to a contract that could pay him $58 million with $25.74 million guaranteed. That deal established Bush's salary potential in his slot as the second overall choice between Young and first pick Mario Williams, whose deal with Houston included guaranteed money of $26.5 million with a possible total value of $62 million.

"You always expect the best, prepare for the worst," Loomis said. "I'm excited he's on his way. I'm excited he'll be here, excited we have an agreement. To be truthful, I'm disappointed it wasn't Friday afternoon."
