Chiefs | Team acquires M. Bennett
Tue, 1 Aug 2006 20:59:52 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Kansas City Chiefs have acquired RB Michael Bennett from the New Orleans Saints for what is believed to be a future draft choice. Paperwork must still be filed with the NFL office and the deal is contingent on Bennett passing a Chiefs' physical exam. Passing the exam is not expected to be an issue because Bennett is already practicing with the Saints.

Man, where the hell have you been?

TheDeuce 08-02-2006 02:07 AM

Does anybody have any idea what round the pick is? I know that the Saints had an offer from the Rams for a fourth-round pick but they turned it down. The FO says it was because they didn't want to trade Bennett to another NFC team, but I wonder if they were hoping to, and did, get a better pick from the Chiefs....

smyce 08-02-2006 05:12 AM

I mean what is Bennett worth? I think KC would be foolish to give us anything better than a 4 for Bennett with LJ and Priest on their roster. That said Im glad we got something for him cause we didnt really need him.

Michael Bennett - #23 - Running back - 5'9" - 211lbs
News: The Chiefs have reportedly acquired RB Michael Bennett from the Saints in exchange for an undisclosed future draft pick.
Impact: Bennett provides a much better handcuff for Larry Johnson owners than Dee Brown ever would have. Head coach Herm Edwards didn't think LJ could carry the full load and the speedy Bennett can be the change-of-pace back he was looking for. Priest Holmes can now retire quietly. (Wed. Aug 2, 2006) oh well at lest it is a draft choice. we are rolling the dice here and i hope duce's knee do not come up snake eyes.

Priest is a very large question mark. the risk of re-injuring that neck .... man i would not do it.
A fourth in 07 and a late pick in 08 maybe. the 08 might depend on playing time. might be lucky and get a 3 in 07.
now it is duce, bush and stecker. if duce goes down?
we got
26 Deuce McAllister RB 6'1" 232 28 12/27/1978 6 Mississippi
23 Reggie Bush RB 5'11" 200 21 3/2/1985 0 USC
27 Aaron Stecker RB 5'10" 213 31 11/13/1975 7 Western Illinois
45 Keith Joseph RB 6'2" 223 25 12/9/1981 1 Texas A&M
25 Fred McAfee RB 5'10" 197 38 6/20/1968 15 Mississippi College
46 Nate Schurman RB 6'2" 247 25 11/8/1981 0 Missouri State

44 Mike Karney RB 5'11" 258 25 7/6/1981 3 Arizona State
32 Jamar Martin RB 5'11" 244 26 4/12/1980 3 Ohio State

Rams | Team tried to acquire M. Bennett
Tue, 1 Aug 2006 21:04:51 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the St. Louis Rams tried to trade for New Orleans Saints RB Michael Bennett, but they were turned down after reportedly offering the Saints a fourth-round pick in next year's NFL Draft. Bennett would have preferred a deal to the Rams, where Scott Linehan, his onetime offensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings, is the first-year head coach. New Orleans officials told Bennett and his agent that they dealt him to Kansas City because they did not want to trade him to an NFC team.

BooBirdSaint 08-02-2006 07:44 AM

If you read between the lines I think this is good news! Bennett traded = Deuce is going to be 100% ready to go to war this season! Hot Damn!!! :biggun:

jergensl 08-02-2006 08:35 AM

even if deuce goes down, we still have baby matrix and stecker...i feel really good about that.

You say that now. But if Deuce is slowed and 'Saint Reggie' doesn't light up the world as a rookie, you may be wishing for some depth at that position. Stecker had an opportunity to put a stranglehold on the backup RB position last year. But it turned out the Smith carried most of the load after Deuce went down. And now Smith is gone.

Bennett certainly was good enough to be the #3 RB for the Saints. I think that the organization was simply doing him a favor by trading him. But it's not like he's going to be the man in KC. That's Larry Johnson's job.

But that was Haslett's fault. Last season, I kept asking why didn't Stecker get more carries. It seemed to me that every time Stecker touched the ball last year, he made a play.

jergensl 08-02-2006 10:32 AM

i agree...stecker looked good last year. it seemed like haslett wanted to force a power running attack.

stecker can be a great weapon.

scenario:
stecker and bush lined up in the backfield...bush motions to right slight...stecker motions to left slot...this equals nightmare for the LBs!!!

heck you could have all three (including Deuce) in the backfield and just keep Deuce in the backfield while spliting the other 2 out as WR....make a power formation into a passing formation.

gandhi1007 08-02-2006 10:58 AM

Hey.....at least we got something for him, instead of following our MO of letting him go for nothing.

Euphoria 08-02-2006 11:15 AM

I don't care who we have at RB if our line doesn't step up our RB's will get killed.

AllSaints 08-02-2006 11:24 AM

Well I m glad Bennet was traded he will probly do alot more a KC then he would have here in NO goodluck in KC Bennet!!!

It was about time we got something for someone. We probably got a 4th but I hope they had some type of clause in the deal if he gets x amount of yards, then it would get kicked up to a 3rd. That would be pretty sweet.

jergensl 08-02-2006 04:15 PM

if i was KC... i would say you get a 6th and if he gets over 500yrds rushing you get a 1st...because it wont happen

LongTimeFan 08-02-2006 06:43 PM

As I said, it would have helped us keeping him around this year more than having Kc's 4th rounder next year , I'm still a little worried about Deuce but I think he's be OK but you just never know coming off an injury as Deuce had last season..
I hope we don't regret the Bennett deal with KC .

As do I. I think people underestimate Stecker's worth. The last two years he has averaged 3.8 (in 2005) and 4.2 (in 2004) which is pretty damn good for a third stringer who wasn't exactly running behind the best OLine in the league. You can't expect him to be a starting quality RB, that's why he gets paid backup money; but he is one of the better backups in the league.

Well yeah SFIAH, I think pretty much every team wants good depth at every position. But ANY team in this league would be screwed if they're first and second string RB got hurt. That's just a fact. And Stecker is definitely more than capable of being a third stringer, he's good enough to be a second-string RB on almost every team in the NFL.

Quote:

Bennett certainly was good enough to be the #3 RB for the Saints.
Yeah he was, but like I said earlier, we had four guys on the depth chart who were at least good enough to be a second-string RB in this league (arguably 3 guys who could start). But here's the big question, do you really want to pay a third-string RB 3 million for two years when you have two guys in front of him, and one guy behind him on the depth chart who are capable? I'll answer it for you, no, you don't. You use that money elsewhere, and it also helps when you can pick up an extra draft pick in the deal.

Quote:

But that was Haslett's fault. Last season, I kept asking why didn't Stecker get more carries.
Very true. Stecker is a very versatile back with speed and power. He's more of a speed/slashing back but he can do the job when asked. I liked A Smith too, but I think Stecker proved in 2004 that he could do the job.

Were you by any chance an OLineman in high school? Haha you're a huge OLine homer.

RockyMountainSaint 08-02-2006 11:41 PM

Did anyone pick up on Mickey Loomis' comments about treating players the "Right Way"? If they have a chance to have significant playing time elsewhere theycould do so. (Paraphrase)
He may have Known/Suspected Reggie could come our way and signed Bennett knowing/had a hunch if things went our way with drafting Reggie we had a chip(Bennett) in our pocket.
Stranger things have happened.

D24pick 08-02-2006 11:58 PM

For any pick over 4th or 4th is a steal, we could use our 3rd pick and get Donnie Edwards...They made the right move for Bennett and the Saints

biloxi-indian 08-04-2006 07:50 AM

The Saints received a fourth-round pick from the Chiefs, a league source said.

Bobaganoosh 08-04-2006 11:55 PM

The saints can now hold on to that 4th rounder and if they wanted to, they could parlay that and the other 4th for a 3rd rounder. The options are there. They could deal that pick and a backup player for Edwards...they could go out and try to find a lineman. Or they could stick it in their pocket and play with it next year.
