Grant at LB?

I realize that it may be a little late in the season for this, but with such a glaring need for LBs, why not convert an already trimmed down Grant? At 280, he may be a bit heavy, but he has speed, ability to shed blocks, great tackling skills, good ball awareness and the intelligence to transition. I know that learning coverages may be tough, but defenses have been known to be flexible. He still could guard a tight end or spy on a mobile qb. Why not make this "LT" type move? How much could this hurt?

DJLengai 08-16-2006 04:44 PM

I wouldn't expect this. I've suggested palying Will Smith at MLB for 2 years becuase we had Howard and Grant. They never tried it then so I definitely don't see it happening now that Howard is gone. I think Fincher or Foreman will be able to handle it. What's the word on Nate Wayne?

saintswhodi 08-16-2006 05:03 PM

Never gonna happen.

gandhi1007 08-16-2006 05:10 PM

If anyone would be moved to LB, Will Smith would be the one to fit the mold. But........like whodi said above.......Never gonna' happen.

jergensl 08-16-2006 05:17 PM

that idea doesn't even make any sense.

papz 08-16-2006 05:33 PM

No no and no. If anyone, Smith would be able to make that transition because he was sought out to be a linebacker when he was drafted by some teams. But why in the world would you even consider moving either of the two? Two successful ProBowl caliber/potential players at their respective positions and move them so they can learn a new position? Then they'd have to lose 20 or 30 pounds more before the season and that's going to affect their play bigtime. Heck why not tell Karney to gain 50 pounds and play on the offensive line.

Noway in hell will that work.

The only way we will get the LB we need
is through the draft. We just have to go with
what we have now and hope like hell Payton
get a couple of good LB next year!

The easiest player to move to MLB that is good at it, that plats DE is Ninkovich...The guy had a big yr for his college team at both poditions, he has speed as well

While playing black jack at a casino one nite, i had two 10's. I asked the dealer if i should split. His response was, "if you had a ten inch pecker, would you cut it in half?"

We have one of the best DE tandems in the nfl. Y split it up? We have no one else to take his place. We have plenty of LB's to figure out who the best three starters are. I'm not bein a smart ***, just a thought. :P

RockyMountainSaint 08-16-2006 09:18 PM

Apologies to whomever made this statement about Jamaal Brown's move to LT. I cannot remember who said it but it fits this situation as well.
[paraprase] "Why take a known commodity and change it to create two unknowns"?
I'm not feeling it xan.

TheDeuce 08-16-2006 09:29 PM

That's ridiculous. He just isn't a LB. Yes he's big and mean and tackles well, but he doesn't have the kind of fluidity in his hips, the experience of playing the position to allow him to diagnose plays as they're unfolding, or the speed to play the position. I think our LBs are going to be fine. They won't win any POY awards, but they're hugely upgraded over last season. I think the biggest problem is going to be our DTs. THey suck. They can't stop the run. People might blame our LBs, but because our DTs can't anchor that DLine, they don't allow our LBs to roam the field and make plays. It's basically what Ray Lewis was saying before the draft, which is why he wanted a big stud DT like Ngata. If the guys up front aren't clogging holes, the other teams OLinemen are free to run upfield and lay block on our backers. But anyways, that was kind of a ridiculous tangent. Grant is not a LB.

Move Drew Brees to safety.

Mean.
But funny.

Ok, it was just a thought. Watching the Titans game, the LB corp just couldn't shed a block or hit a hole. With all the DE talent on the team, one would think that just one of them might be able to make the transition.

maybe Stallworth at OLB?

hagan714 08-17-2006 08:01 AM

Oh no are we going to open the 34 D can worms again?
If you are going to play with this idea all we need to do is drop him into coverage and see how he does this year. less painful if it does not work.

xan 08-17-2006 08:36 AM

You saw through my obfuscation, designed not to make whodi go ape-sh-t over 3-4. Since the team still sucks for the 6th straight year at 4-3, and we've got so much DE talent that could make the transition....

WhoDat 08-17-2006 08:44 AM

When did Halo start handing out crack on this board? It was that Magnolia video that did it, wasn't it?

hagan714 08-17-2006 08:45 AM

I thought thats what you were doing

I woulda smacked that sh-t straight back where it came from. Another idea that's never gonna happen. :P

Well, barring an acquisition of a run stuffing meatlocker DT and the fortuitous signings of quality LBs during the next round of cuts, how do you make this defense for DL/LB corps better?

This year, we can't. There's no help. On defense, we simply do not have the players. If we had ONE strong DT, just one, we could get by. But we don't. Simmons retiring hurt us big as well. Our LBs are decent, but no one is writing home about them. Our only two real playmakers are at DE, and a 3-4 with this personnel would completely neutralize them because who else would man the DE spot in a 3-4 for us every down? No one i'd trust. I dig what you are saying, believe me I do. But going to a 3-4 now would only make a bad defense worse cause we simply do not have the personnel for it. And trying to force it, when they have not practiced it once far as I know this off-season is even worse. Your points are valid, just not feasible, at this time. IMO.

cajuntexcop 08-17-2006 01:16 PM

Ok, I just hit the pipe so bear with me. Lets put Brees in an O-Line spot, Carney can double as LB'er/Punt returner. Grant can play option QB, with Gibbs setting up some wishbone sets from his Oklahoma days. We can set the backfield up with Zach Strief, Joe Horn, and ghost of Chuck Muncie. Jammal Brown can be the punter, and Stallsworth can be our pass rusher, that way if he bats a ball down, we can be supportive of his efforts for a change. We'll have Reggie as the holder on all kicks, but fake every field goal. We can re-sign the surely soon to be cut Aaron Brooks as deep snapper, cause he has experience at it. Then the Coup d' gras...........Benson as Head Coach. Ah, the shear fun and frivolity of it all will send many teams into fits of histeria, at which time we can spring the trap on them. So, what ya think.......not everyone at once now........ :dunce:
