I'd say give the kid the better part of the year to pass judgement on the deal. If it truly is a 4th rounder it seems excessive for a back-up to possible spell starter at the position. Hell, Denver just nabbed a 3rd rounder for Lelie who is barely under contract and malcontent. Granted, the Falcons got burned bad here, but it goes to show you how good management takes advantage of the bad.

At this point we can use all the
help we can get with Linebackers.

But we don't really know if it was 4th or 7th, sites are stating different picks

TheDeuce 08-23-2006 10:49 PM

Name all four starting LBs for the Chargers? I see the point you're trying to make, but it doesn't really apply here because this guy wasn't a starter, he was a fill-in player when the Cowboys had injuries. He's a backup. Hence nobody knows who he is. A 4th is WAYYYYYY too much for a backup LB when we were apparently offering a 4th for Donnie Edwards a Pro Bowler... does that count as one BTW?

TheDeuce 08-23-2006 10:51 PM

And I forgot about Merriman, is he a LB?

chRxis 08-23-2006 11:19 PM

what about nate wayne? is he still with us or did we let him go? seriously, peter boulware and jamie sharper are still out there in free agency... do these guys not warrant consideration? maybe sign 'em to a one year deal like we did simmons before he bailed... our biggest areas of concern are dt and cb and of course d coordinator as well.... i'm not too sure about gibbs...

LKelley67 08-23-2006 11:33 PM

Got in late and found this mess LOL

Nate Wayne released.

Shanle ended up being a 7th rounder. You guys should know better from ESPN.

I have no prob with a 7th. Our coaches know exactly what they are getting and deemed him worth it. Houston could have taken him on waivers ahead of us is why I think they did it.

Don't count out more movement.

saintsrule 08-24-2006 01:52 AM

If they feel they needed to add another player, than I am happy that they got one.

Well said. I am not judging until I see him play for a month or two. We needed a LB, I dont care how high the pick was. Next year is next year. If I learned anything from last year it is that next year may not ever come. We needed a LB now, we got one now. If losing a 4th round pick can cripple us next year, we were already on crutches and it does not matter.

Even I, who am no Sunshiner by ANY means, have a little more faith in the team than that... Or enought desperation... Whatever... All is good until we are below .500 in the regular season. Then I'll be the guy handing out the piychforks and lighting the torches. But this, I'm cool with.

papz 08-24-2006 05:46 AM

If indeed it's a 7th, I don't think anyone has a problem with the trade now.

Next game... Colts. At least they're 0-8 in their last 8 preseason games. We have a chance!

I know it wasn't football, but a similiar situation happen to some guy named Lou Gehrig.

TallySaint 08-24-2006 08:14 AM

..... and I know the Bucs are glad they got rid of that Steve Young guy.

wheelman 08-24-2006 10:24 AM

And what about that Jake Delhomme dude?

mjf150 08-24-2006 10:35 AM

Yeah, he was just some "crappy, no-name" back-up who only played when someone got injured.

FatiusJeebs 08-24-2006 10:38 AM

Great point you guys. MJF...still love the helmet.

shackney 08-24-2006 12:51 PM

tHAT DUDE IS A CERTIFIED JOKE. pARCELLS LIKES TO HAVE 5-6 GREAT LINEBACKERS ON HIS DEFENSE. iF THIS JOKER WAS GOOD, HE'D STILL BE A COWBOY. WE GAVE UP A 4TH ROUND PICK!? WE GOT THE CRAPPY END OF THE STICK! I HOPE PAYTON HAS BETTER PLANS FOR THE OFF-SEASON THIS YEAR, BECAUSE 4TH ROUND IS VALUE AND THAT LITTLE WHITE LINEBACKER WILL PLAY PUNT TEAM IF HE'S LUCKY!

wheelman 08-24-2006 12:54 PM

Seventh round pick, not a fourth.

FatiusJeebs 08-24-2006 02:40 PM

Hey I found an article on Shanle and what Payton thinks. Hopefully this will make some of you guys feel a little better. http://www.nola.com/sports/t-p/index...270.xml&coll=1

AllSaints 08-24-2006 04:24 PM

shackney 08-24-2006 05:18 PM

D24pick 08-24-2006 07:11 PM

It was a 7th rounder, reported from Nola.com

There are 4 sites that report is a 7th

Quote:

"The Saints acquired Cowboys linebacker Scott Shanle in a trade Wednesday, giving up a seventh-round draft pick in 2007, according to league sources."
