Eagles cut Detmer and Pinkston, add Feeley

NFL.com wire reports

PHILADELPHIA (Aug. 30, 2006) -- The Philadelphia Eagles brought back quarterback A.J. Feeley and released quarterback Koy Detmer and receiver Todd Pinkston.

The signing of Feeley, released earlier this week by San Diego, completes a profitable cycle for Philadelphia.

The Eagles originally drafted him in the fifth round in 2001 and he started five games in 2002, leading the team to four wins when Donovan McNabb and Detmer were both sidelined with injuries.

He was traded to Miami after the 2003 season for a second-round draft pick that the Eagles subsequently used to pick wide receiver Reggie Brown, currently a starter. Now they get him back without surrendering a player or a pick.

Pinkston, entering his seventh season, appeared to be on his way out when the Eagles traded for receiver Donte Stallworth.

Pinkston missed last year with a torn Achilles' tendon and battled soreness in both ankles during training camp. He caught one pass for 4 yards in the preseason.

Detmer had spent the last nine seasons with the Eagles, but the team signed Jeff Garcia in the offseason to be McNabb' insurance policy.

Then, there's the Saints' FO. We got rid of Howard a season late, and Philly still got him for nothing. We got Hollis Thomas who will retire in 1-2 years, but did not go after Kematou who is younger and now we have to face him twice a year, We let D. Smith go whom we could use right now for no compensation, We got rid of a young, talented WR (Stallworth) with a lot of upside because the coach didn't like his attitude for an old, average LB and a 4th.

Now, we want to get rid of the pick we just got plus more for an even older LB that will only play 1-2 more years and makes tackles behind the line when we really need a solid CB or OL player. Our FO is the anti-Philly.

We brought in some good players, but we are also making an equal amount of bone-head moves to cancel that out, reducing our picks we have aquired and getting several old players who will all be gone in 1-2 years. How this makes Peyton and Loomis into people that know what they're doing is the same delusion you guys had about Haslett 4 years ago.

Why? Are we going to put 11 safeties on the field as our starting D?

Upside? If he hasn't realized his potential (god, I hate that word) by now. When will he?
He isn't exactly a 2nd yr player.

These are called stop-gap moves. They are designed to keep us somewhat competitive while the roster is being purged of turds. Also to allow young talent a year or two to mature and develop.
Do some of you realize that Payton inherited largely a group of immature primadonnas with an overdeveloped sense of entitlement? The previous staff allowed this to happen.
Bringing in vets with good character helps to teach younger players professionalism and since they still have a few miles left in them the team won't go 0-16 and give Tommy Boy
an excuse to re-locate.
Five Deep Breaths...............

i dont see how you can complain about the front offlice letting people go for nothing and then try and downgrade the stallworth trade......if you didnt know it yet, he was leaving in a year and wouldve been like the others and we wouldnt have gotten a thing for him. stallworth wasnt gonna be the difference this year between contending or not. so why not move him now give the young receivers some playing time and try and upgrade what we have? its better than nothing which would be what we'd have at the end of the year. i dont like the fact that we got rid of stallworth, but like it or not he wasnt gonna resign with us. better we get something now than nothing later.

What is lacking in the analysis is Stallworth did not improve and was beat out by a seventh round draft choice.

Not to mention "professionalism"...not my word, but a word used by people closer to the environment that any of US!

Henderson better not look over his shoulder...there are a few teammates looking to send him PACKING.
