Karney-Joseph update....

I saw Paytons press conference today.

Karney has a calf injury,out 2 to 3 weeks.

Joseph has a mcl,out 4 to 6 weeks.

No info on whether they will bring someone in or use someone from the team.

Why not bring up Branch and put Joseph on IR?

I totally agree w/ you on that one Joe. Branch is a wide back. He could play the FB position w/ a little work.

I saw Branch at training camp and this kids got skills. He almost has the size to pull it off. He seems to be smart enough to pick up the position. Give him a shot. I think he's earned it.

<"Obviously, there's a concern (losing) two fullbacks, and what it does to us offensively and how we go about replacing those guys," Payton said. "We have to give that a lot of thought today and tomorrow. We've got to decide the plan of action we're going to take, whether we go outside or work from within. We've got to be flexible enough to adjust (without a fullback) or find another true fullback.

"I'll visit with (general manager) Mickey (Loomis). Ultimately, we'll have a plan. Right now, it'd be premature for me to tell you one way or the other. With tomorrow being our game plan day, we'll have to make this decision prior to us getting in the course of the game plan."

Karney said he injured himself coming out of his stance.

"It was weird the way it happened," he said. "I've never had anything like this before."

One consideration might be free-agent fullback Mike Warren, 6 feet 1, 248 pounds. Warren worked out in August for Saints officials in Jackson, Miss. Warren played at North Carolina State and finished up his college career at Elon. He was not in an NFL training camp. >

Fullbacks Need Time to Heal

Fullbacks need time to heal
Payton says Horn capable of playing better than he did

The Saints will be without injured fullbacks Mike Karney and Keith Joseph for an extended period of time, Coach Sean Payton said Monday.

Karney is expected to miss two to four games with a strained right calf. Joseph is expected to miss four to six games with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Both injuries occurred in the first half of Sunday's 19-14 victory against the host Cleveland Browns.

"Obviously, there's a concern (losing) two fullbacks, and what it does to us offensively and how we go about replacing those guys," Payton said.

INAUSPICIOUS START: Payton said wide receiver Joe Horn did not play "particularly well" against the Browns. He caught two passes for 25 yards but had several drops and didn't block particularly well downfield on running plays. "There is a run or two where we might have scored with just the effort down the field," Payton said. "That is something we can do a better job moving forward. I think Joe would say the same thing after he sees the tape. He had a big catch for us later in the game. It wasn't one of his better games. I think he can play better."

STOUTMIRE REMEMBERS 9/11: Monday was a sobering day for Saints safety Omar Stoutmire, who was a member of the New York Giants at the time of the deadliest attacks in the nation's history five years ago. "We played Denver on Monday night and had just gotten back to New York City at 4 or 5 in the morning," Stoutmire said. "I went home and went to sleep and woke up about 9 or 10 in the morning, and everything had already occurred. Someone called to tell me, and I thought it was a joke initially. Then I saw it on the news. We practiced the next day, and the Twin Towers weren't there. All you could see was smoke in the air. It was pretty traumatic. Five years is a long time, but it seems like it happened only four or five months ago." Payton also was with the Giants at the time of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, serving as offensive coordinator under Coach Jim Fassel.

WORTH REPEATING: "Obviously, I was happy and proud for our players and staff because they've worked hard and equally as happy for the city, because in the seven or eight months I've been here you begin to understand the importance of this team to this town and to this region. Those guys who are big supporters are going to work with a little bit of swagger today. They feel a little bit better. Maybe, their week is better than it would have been had we lost. So I'm excited for those people who have been with this team through thick and thin, and there's been a lot of thin lately." -- Payton on his first NFL win as head coach.
