I think that having Dale Carter and Ashley Ambrose will improve our team. I think they will be good cornerbacks. I think that the Saints should focus a lot on covering short passes, because I noticed last year that other teams would throw short when we would be covering deep. And the other teams would ge a lot of yardage. Please correct me if I am wrong.

YOUR CORRECTED. YOUR WRONG. HOW MANY TIMES DID DALE CARTER GET BEAT LAST YEAR?

Well shouldn\'t Ambrose be better?

Carter had a fine half season and is still a capable corner. I think what he meant was that alot of short passes went for long gains because our d-line couldn\'t recognize a screen, our LBers were poor in pursuit and couldn\'t shed blocks and our secondary was focused on their coverage man until they recognized what took place, shed their block and reacted on the ball carrier.
I didn\'t think our secondary was at fault on alot of those plays. Our front seven got the quick burn and 30 yards later a DB stopped the guy.

Thankyou lumm0x, that is exactly what I was trying to say.

Ambrose is an improvement. I pulled for Dale Carter as much as anyone last year and tried to fool myself into thinking he still had what it took. But he proved me wrong. I hope he proves me wrong this season too and plays well. The secondary will be much improved because of the safety position and the addition of Ashley Ambrose.

Billy, you didn\'t think Carter played above par considering he only started a few games after his suspension ended? I agree he disappointed all with the off-field problems, but he was pretty solid in my opinion, for a guy that sat out that much. He showed he still had some degree of athleticism and veteran saavy in the appearances he made.

And I think Dale Carter Played a whole lot better than any of the other cornerbacks we had last year.

Lummox, put it this way. If you pulled Deon Sanders in is prime off the street after not playing football for 2 years and tell him don\'t let your guy catch the ball, how well do you think Deon would play? Better than Dale Carter I expect. Maybe you guys saw something in Dale Carter last year I didn\'t. I hope so.

My personal opinion of Mr. Sanders is that the only way I would pull him off the street is if some of him got stuck to my vehicle after I ran him down. Just kidding. I think Carter was as good or better than anyone else we started last year and could have started for a few teams around the league. Granted he wasn\'t like he was in his prime, but he wasn\'t the breakdown on defense. Was he worth his salary? No. Was he more than I hoped after his late start is taken into account? Yes. Put it this way, lets see what he does when the QB is rushed.

LummOx, your right about one thing. A good pass rush definitley will help a corner out. I can see it now. Dale carter intercepts the ball he\'s at the 40, 30, 20, 10....oh i\'m awake now. Anyway i hope you and Dale prove me wrong.

Last year it was Carter, with thomas, Irvan, and Craver. Irvan just Didn\'t have the talent. Craver has some potential, but I wouldn\'t start him, Thomas, If he hadn\'t had broken his hand, he might have played better, I still see Carter as the best out of the four. But with Ambrose on the team our D should be real good.

Heh heh, glad that you weren\'t offended, as it was more posted as a joke than to offend. I laugh everytime I look at it.
I do think that you aren\'t giving Carter enough credit. He showed flashes of brilliance last year, and take into account that last year he was thrown in after a suspension, was his first year with the team, and he was injured.

Dale Carter wasn\'t allowed any contact with the team while he was suspended last year. If you take that into account he didn\'t play that bad. Superman couldn\'t cover opps recievers with the pass rush we had last year.

The cornerbacks did not have a chance to do anything last year because the DL and LBs did not give them a chance. Hopefully this year we will have a better Dl and LBs. Even though AA and DC are getting older, they can still play. They will be a big help in teching the younger guys how to cover in the NFL. I think with the additions we have on defense, we should be a much improved team this year. :)

I read earlier today that the cornerback pool (both in FA and draft) next year is supposed to be -incredibly- deep. In view of such, I suppose it makes sense to have chosen to stick by Ambrose and Carter in spite of their advancing age.

The corners will be ok this year. They\'re not my concern. The LB\'s are.

I happy this has become a bigger issue. I am scared about our CB\'s too. It is not a question of talent or skill, but speed. Carter and Ambrose will fine against Buccaners, Panthers and other tea,s with slower receivers. But the Falcons and other faster WR teams will give them trouble. Next year will be better for CB\'s in terms of the Draft and Free Agency. Lets hope this year we can hang

Hey Joe, you know we gotta haze the new kids around here just a little. They are showing up in droves. :P
Wouldn\'t worry about the lack of speed at CB, the zone defense should help on this and get our safeties more involved in plays.

Well, I guess I\'ll wade into this...

Watch out for Craver. He\'s athletic, fast, and strong. Carter, Ambrose, and Thomas are all crafty veterans - crafty veterans who have lost a step. If they help Craver out and he gets his mind around the game he will start next year. He\'s too talented not to. The coaches loved him early last season until he got hurt.

Otherwise, my approximation of our secondary is this - it will be better only b/c we will play zone and should have better play up front. Otherwise, I think Carter, Thomas, and Ambrose are all average overall. Carter may have something left, but Ambrose and Thomas seem over the hill to me. Next off-season I hope the target Bailey b/c we need a shutdown kind of guy.
