High-priced Bucs on market as deadline nears

The most overrated, over-hyped date on the NFL calendar — the NFL's trade deadline — is less than three days away. While significant trades prior to the trading deadline rarely take place, the names on the trade block can point to a handful of subplots and inner thinking inside NFL complexes.

FOXSports.com has spoken with several teams on this and come up with a list of players whose names have been floated from general managers or personnel directors in recent days.

Perhaps the most intriguing phone calls have come from the 813 area code. That would be Tampa. Several clubs have called the Buccaneers' approach a "fire sale." According to seven different teams, the Bucs have offered up such names as DT Anthony McFarland, CB Brian Kelly and a handful of others.

"They said we can take a look at their roster and aside from first-day picks the last couple of years, guys like Cadillac, everyone else they're open to talking about," said one team's GM. "They can't trade certain guys like Derrick Brooks or Ronde Barber but we got the impression they were open to everybody else."

Another team executive said he thought DE Simeon Rice and safety Jermaine Phillips were also included in the group of those players Tampa would be open to trading. It's unclear what cap ramifications would arise from trading a Rice, McFarland or Kelly.

It's not likely that anyone would be interested in any of the aforementioned names due to their salaries but it's interesting that after starting 0-4 the Bucs would take such an approach.

The Bucs are likely to deny such intentions as teams never like to put a player out on the trading block, have him find out, then have him end up staying with the club. However, Tampa was not shy in calling around with their intentions.

By the way, the Bucs were asking for a first-day pick for McFarland according to another GM inside the NFC.

The biggest name on the block is the Bills' Nate Clements — a cornerback who will strike it rich, make that very rich, as a free agent after the season. The thinking here is that Buffalo will lose the young corner, so why not try to get something, anything, for him rather than simply part ways. Whoever trades for him would have to sign him to a blockbuster deal as well. One team did say, however, that they were seriously considering it but weren't sure if they could get their numbers together in time.

Other players on the market include the Jets' Derrick Blaylock, who started half the team's games at running back this year, the Rams DE Anthony Hargrove and Cardinals OT Leonard Davis. Davis has a big number a team would have to take on but it may not be a bad trade if someone would shift him back to guard. Due to the money he's getting paid he has been put at tackle but many inside the league feel he's better suited for the guard slot.

Davis has lost favor with head coach Denny Green and when Arizona called around this week shopping the behemoth lineman it was for, "a pick or a player" or as another NFC GM said, "for pretty much anything, they seemed like they were just trying to unload him."

While the idea of adding Clements makes my football pants go crazy, realistically, what would you offer in exchange? Better start with a 1st round pick...

I doubt the Bucs would trade within the division, but I'd love to see McFarland come home and start at DT for us.

I'd rather see Brian Kelly in the black and gold. He's extremely underrated and would push Craft off the field except in dime situations. I'd be more comfortable with Kelly and Freddy T. starting.

Clements went into this season as the top CB aside from Champ Bailey. Buffalo would probably settle for a third-rounder, but he'd want top corner money. Kelly wouldn't and is still pretty damned good.

Make the trade conditional on signing the Clemeents, just like the deal for Stallworth.

I bet Clements can be had fora 4 or maybe a 5. they will not tag him again next year. or they let him walk. the problem is he would be coming in 8 games into the season. not like donte were he came in at the end of camp.

I don't think there is any way anyone could get clements for a 4th or 5th. Too many other teams would give more for him than that. Knowing he will want big money next season, I can see a team giving a 2nd or conditional 3rd rounder for him. He can come in and help a team right away. But, I would more likely be for only one season. I agree with the guy who wants Brian Kelly, he will be cheaper, maybe not as good, but he would still help our poor pass defense alot. And he comes from a defense that has been good for many years, so he knows what it takes to be a good NFL defense. Clements on the other hand, not so much.

Clements is young enough I would not mind giving up a 2nd for him..he could really cut the field in half, lets face it McKenzie is not doing that anymore....
