Jim Henderson Plays the Blame Game

If you've been a Saints' fan for very long, you've learned one thing: When it seems like everything is coming your way, it probably means you're in the wrong lane. The Saints were met head-on yesterday by a good football team and some bad bounces.

The result wasn't pretty.

Maybe the Saints were overdue for a clunker after six superlative performances. Yesterday it arrived.

Winners don't make excuses. And that means I've got some.

I can think of three reasons why the Saints lost yesterday -- besides the four interceptions, one fumble, and ten penalties.

First -- that stupid time change thing. When the Saints were told to "fall back" on Sunday, they took it literally. I guess they were still confused by the recent "autumnal equinox" or something. How many of us thought that "autumnal equinox" was just the newest Britney Spears perfume? I can't believe I'm the only one.

So I blame Carl Arredondo for that.

Second -- it was the Saints' alumni weekend and they were the guests of the Saints Hall of Fame and the team at the game. With so many former Saints' players in the Superdome on Sunday, the karma they generated having been associated with so many losses there simply over-powered the karma of the new Saints who had never lost there this season.

So I blame Angela Hill who's a member of the Saints Hall of Fame as a former winner of the Joe Gemellli Fleur De Lis award for that.

Third -- the distraction of the upcoming holiday. The Saints obviously overlooked the Ravens while planning their trick or treat routs for tomorrow night. I understand they were practically giddy with anticipation over the trick they'd planned at Dennis Woltering's: turning over the outhouse at his west bank mansion....again.

So I blame Dennis for their lack of focus.

I hate to point fingers, but...

Finally it was ironic that the Ravens had more area products than the Saints and how much those players contributed to their victory. Ronnie Prude from LSU -- an interception return for a touchdown. Dawan Landry from Hahnville -- two interceptions, one for a touchdown. Ed Reed from Destrehan -- five tackles. Adalius Thomas from USM -- a sack. Steve McNair from Alcorn -- two touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown.

So obviously we need to re-think this "road home" policy. And for that I blame Kathleen Blanco and Ray Nagin.

I'm not sure I'm safe in blaming Carl, Angela, and Dennis. But I'm pretty sure you're always safe in blaming Kathleen and Ray.

And so I will - until next week.
