hagan, a little research please..............

currently, do we have two second round picks next yr without the stallworth deal that could be a third or do we just have one pick there?
coulda swore we had two......but, if you can, besides the 32nd first round pick we'll have next yr, break down our draft if you don't mind.....while we need to tweak certain areas of the defense, i believe we really need a 2nd string qb that can fill in and continue to win if brees goes down.......where will we find him? fa, or the draft? let's have a change of pace to slow my beating heart and intrigue my unbeatable saints for the moment, shall we? smitty

1,2,3
3/4 Stallworth from philli. Rumors are contract talks have stared
4 from Kansas City for Bennett
4,5,6
7 to Dallas for Scott Shanle
unknowns
a conditional late-round pick from Atlanta for Gandy: he has started the entire year. So maybe a 5?

Looking pretty good, we'll also have to see how those compensatory picks come out.

so, possibly 2- 3's or 1-3 and 3- 4's or 2-3's and 2-4's ......is that right? and, on top of that, they could be, ( the traded ones) better in the order we'll get em them we'll have where we sit when all is said and done, right?
and someone's already asked about the comp picks......(of which we should get better than we did last yr) so, the packages are very nicely wrapped and can bring some interesting things to the table....especially if we go deeper than one win in the playoffs.......time to drink, and think.......smitty

Round 0ne is the pick to gauge the others bye. We will be piking in the 20's at the least. Right now, if I figure it right, we should be 27. So you are looking at the best player available type of pick. Very rarely does a player drop into your lap that can fill a certain area. We will be looking at the thirds and fourth best of the impact positions. QB, T, WR, CB, DT and RB. After that you are sitting good to fill the other areas left with quality players.
Quentin Moses, DE/OLB Georgia
Daymeion Hughes, CB California
Justin Blalock, OG/OT Texas
*Antoine Cason, CB Arizona
*Dwayne Jarrett, WR USC
Marcus Thomas, DT Florida
Jeff Samardzija, WR Notre Dame
Tanard Jackson, CB Syracuse
Paul Williams, CB Fresno State
Joe Staley, OT Central Michigan
These are just a guess at some of the players that will be there in the 20s. So If we go out and get a top flight CB in FA it changes everything. I have read that Shawn believes that money on a top flight FA CB is money well spent. So that could be key to what we do in round one. But do not be to surprised to see us pick up another in the draft. Fred and Craft are not a long term answer. Father time is against them. M&M has never lived up to the billing brought him here. Not really to his own fault as much as the 5 yard contact rule being changed. Though in the Dallas Game he was banging and taking alot risks. He may have a new found trust in the safeties to cover his back. Who really knows. He could end up a cap cut within the next two years.
This is were I think we will be looking. CB
As for LB and DT those are harder to judge were in the draft they will fall. The top 2
Patrick Willis, LB Mississippi
Paul Posluszny, OLB, Penn State (knee is big concern)
Are going to be within trading distance for us. Most mocks have them going in the mid teens. Donte signing and us getting a 3 would probly determine such a move, If not the saints may roll the dice on a *Brandon Siler Florida if he comes out. Another option is for us to trade our pick and move down to the top of the second before making the pick. I really do not think they will pull a Haz and over reach too much.
As for a DT i do not think we will trade up to get one of the better ones because io is just to high on the board to travel.
DeMarcus 'Tank' Tyler, North Carolina State
Is an interesting option to trade up/down for in the second. He is the left over from the great NC State DL of last year.
Any how, the options are many and not until the JR declare we will not really get a clear picture of how the draft may shape up.
One last thing. I really think TE will be drafted in the later part of day one. There is no Vernon Davis this year but the crop looks to be well above average.
*Zach Miller, Arizona State
*Greg Olson, Miami (FL)
Joe Newton, Oregon State
Matt Spaeth, Minnesota
Matt is the one I am keeping my eye on. He is big, soft hands and good speed. The thing about him is his blocking. He blocked on a line that Baber and Maroney ran for so many NCAAA records. He seems to fit Shawn type of TE. Just a guess. His shoulder may take him of the teams list.
Shawn left us so dumb founded last year it is hard to say.
As for comp picks they can not be traded. But they do give some freedom. But do not count on much. The players lost and the players added are pretty much a wash. besides look at our record. I have never found a good description of the determination process so I really can not say for sure.
This is my best guess Ssmitty

Your guess is as good as anyone on the QB bit. yes Shawn will pick up one to bring in and groom. with a pick? who knows. If so i would say a late round diamond in the rough like he did with Romo. 2 to 3 year project i am betting

I hate to bring this up again, but with all of the talented WRs we have, would it be inconcievable, to possibly trade Copper, for a third, or fourth rounder? That would leave us with Horn, Colston, and Henderson. I'm just thinking defense. This idea might be stupid I guess.

RE: hagan, a little research please..............

with payton being offensive, i still believe he shores up what he needs to and always there is a place for the future qb......i do not see this need going on the back burner. while best player is always the way to go, there are trades to be made to compensate for that.....not often will we get a bush fall in our laps and although he hasn't had record #'s you can see he's gonna be real special. round one we only gauge our picks on, not the traded ones...........so, we should have some decent early to mid round picks...from the first to 2nd to 3rd to 4th and so on, wheeling dealing is always being talked about and usually the other team always picks up an extra nice pick for it......
we have roughly half a new team from last yr with how many draft picks not only making the roster, but playing on it? this is a make shift team, let us not forget.......
but, a damn good one.........i don't think many will second guess payton as they did before, but they will expect the same or better results............smitty

RE: hagan, a little research please..............

not really. My view point is Shawn is a offensive coach with his roots in the QB position. So drop passes are not his thing. If he can upgrade the position and save cap dollars to boot he will do it. When I say cap I think of Horn for the dollars and Henderson for the drops. Horn I doubt will go if he is willing to redo his contract and step into a #2 or #3 WR role in the next 2 to 3 years. I do not know if Closton can take over the #1 spot yet. If a young stud is there he will pull the trigger. Did we need bush? not really but he is no idot. AJ would have filled a bigger need at the time but how can you pass on him.
The same will go for WR. I am looking at Henderson as next years WR trade bait to be dangled. If we get speed and better hands in the draft.
