Loomis
 

The single most important thing Loomis did in the past year is hire Sean Payton, followed by signing Drew Brees and drafting Reggie Bush. The Saints have the No. 1 offense in the NFL and close to $28 million in salary-cap space for next year. Believe me, under Loomis, New Orleans suddenly is a very desirable place to play.


I got that info off ESPN and with that being said a CB in the free agency should be #1 priority and if we could get a MLB a playmaker at MLB and our D should be a lot better. Charles Grant should stay (imo) but if he’s to leave, over the years, the Saints are able to come up with good DE’s. In the draft we should go after CB, DT/E, TE and OL but we could find some gems in the later rounds to go after a DT/E and OL.

So after years of Loomis being an idiot who couldn't do anything right after Mueller left, now he's a genius? I agree the team seems to be under very capable management right now, but what brought about the change?

I think what brought about the change is Sean Payton. I don't think there's any doubt that he's a better evaluator of talent than Haslett was, and I believe most good GM's listen to the opinions of their head coach. Seeing as Haslett was obviously so incompetent at judging talent, it made Loomis look bad. I think Payton really brought a fundamental shift in the way players are judged. Payton has a plan and sticks to it very stubbornly, and if a player won't fit into the plan, regardless of athletic ability, he won't try to get him. In the end Loomis gets a lot of credit for it. And, I believe it's justified.

Payton has a a plan but he seems to able to *adjust* the plan as things evolve. Under Haslett there seemed to be no ability to see past the information in front of his face. Also, there are no players above reproach with Payton. If Bush started being a negative factor on the Saints team I believe he would be traded.

This makes the GM look good. Ultimately it falls to our coach though.

Loomis, and to a certain degree Haslett, doesn't get enough credit for personnel decisions made over the last few years. There were some mistakes, mainly keeping Aaron Brooks too long, but they also got Horn and Deuce re-signed and also drafted Will Smith and Jamaal Brown, both Pro-Bowlers this year. Payton is clearly better at coaching up younger talent than many other pro coaches, Haslett included. Heck he even got a good season out of Quincy Carter in Dallas.

Mickey deserves a lot of credit for successfully negotiating good trades, like the Stallworth deal and the Jeff Faine deal, that keep us well under the cap.
