What would you do?

If you had control of the Saints this off-season.

Here's my selections:

Wide Receivers

Cut Joe Horn
Sign Patrick Crayton, RFA, Dallas
Sign, Kevin Curtis, UFA, St. Louis

Tight Ends

Cut Ernie Conwell
Sign, Eric Johnson, UFA, San Francisco

Cornerback

Cut Fred Thomas
Draft 1st round Marcus McCauley, CB Fresno State

Linebackers

Cut Danny Clark
Draft 2nd round Buster Davis, ILB, Florida State

Defensive Tackles

Cut Rodney Leslie
Re-sign Hollis Thomas
Sign, Kris Jenkins, after he's cut, Carolina Panthers
Sign Vonnie Holliday, UFA, Miami Dolphins

Kickers

Cut Carney
Pick up the best strong legged kicker available. We don't need 2 kickers on the roster.

The rest of the draft I would spend on Offensive Line and Cornebacks, maybe a Quarterback in the 6th or 7th round.

RE: What would you do?

I'm going in a different direction...

QB- we need a true prospect behind Brees-Martin. Someone who plays similar to Brees and can be positively influenced by Brees' style of play.

RB- get Branch on the roster. We don't need to add anyone though.

FB- we're fine here.

WR- find a way to re-negotiate Horn. He should retire a Saint and I think he's a positive influence for the team. He needs to assume a grandfather role on Colston, Henderson and Copper and accept the reality he's not a #1 or #2 anymore. I agree with getting one of Crayton or Curtis if possible though. Stay away from WR in the draft.

TE- I don't like any draftees or FA's this year. Conwell should go and re-sign Miller and keep Owens and Campbell and make due this year.

OL- Stinchy might be gone. I like adding Steinbach as I doubt Cincy will tag him. If we get him, Holland can walk. Let Streif play RT and draft depth at OT.

DL- Re-sign Grant no matter what and get Hollis back for one more year. Leisle I'm on the fence about. I'd like to see Ian Scott in the rotation. Other than that, keep the line the way it is. They'll develop more chemistry and be fine.

LB- With Shanle re-signing we now need a MLB. Simoneau can walk. He's a back up at best. Kawika Mitchell would fit the bill and draft a 2nd or 3rd round LBer for depth. Keep Danny Clark. He's solid.

CB- Cut Fred Thomas twice just to be sure. Spend our first rounder on CB and get the best available we can in FA. Clements is too much and Samuel may get the tag. Perhaps Smoot or some other tier 2 FA at this position. I don't like Craft either but keep him one more year as depth.

S- With Harper back I think he and Bullocks are fine. We need depth here so a 3rd or 4th rounder is needed. We need a true SS in depth here.

K- I'm fine with Carney if Berger returns to take over P and KO duties. I liked the job Weatherford did though and I'd prefer to see us cut both Berger and Carney, let Weatherford be the future at P and I agree with getting the best available veteran K as a stop gap.

RE: What would you do?

Quote:

Wide Receivers

Cut Joe Horn
Haha damn Cher, that's cold blooded.

Here's what I would do:

QB - I think we are set here. It does worry me that we only have two QBs on the roster, and with Brees dislocation yesterday, I'd like to see another guy that we could bring in if need be. What I'm thinking is a guy like AMac. I really feel bad that he got ran over by the Titans mascot... seriously. I think that Payton could have really helped him develop his skills (because we all know his physical skills were off the charts). I mean hell, Payton turned Quincy Carter into a 3000 yard passer. I wouldn't mind us investing a late round pick in a "project QB."

RB - we are set. I was very unimpressed with Stecker last season. He always seemed to be dropping passes out of the backfield. I agree with lumm0x here, we should replace Stecker with Branch.

FB - obviously we are set here for as long as we want to keep Karney.

WR - I really hope that we can get Joe to re-structure his contract. I love the guy, and yes, I do think he's a great influence on the team, but the cold hard fact is that over the last two or three years he hasn't been worth the money he's getting. It would be a real classy move for him to come forward and say "I don't deserve this money, and I can help the team by restructuring." Will it happen? I honestly have no clue right now. But if it doesn't, as much as it would hurt, I agree with Cher that we will need to let him go. I am looking for Payton to invest a first day pick or some serious FA consideration in a good WR. I don't like Ohio State, but everytime I watch their games, I'm impressed with Anthony Gonzalez. Good route runner, good hands, high character (I believe he was going to go to Stanford for his MBA before he decided on the NFL).

TE - absolutely need to cut Ernie Conwell. I can't stand this guy. He needs to be cut, NOW. I think Billy Miller can be the guy this next season, and adding another TE for depth would be nice.

OL - This was one of the best units in the NFL this last season. I hope that we don't turn it over too much. Stinch had a great season, and I'd like to see him stay. Remember he's still young and this was his first season to play, so I think he'll only get better. Holland might be gone, but overall, all I think we really need to do is add depth.

DL - SIGN CHARLES GRANT!!!! This must be done, IMO. Re-sign Hollis Thomas too. I have never been impressed with Leisle, so I wouldn't mind seeing him gone. I am looking for the Saints to add another run stuffer this offseason.

LB - this unit is set except for a MLB. Patrick Willis please! I hope we get this guy, he's always all over the field. I have a feeling that Danny Clark isn't going to be back because he couldn't beat out Simoneau.

CB - I think we should keep Fred Thomas, but relegate him to a nickel or dime corner. He's got good technique, and he's pretty good in run support, but he just doesn't have the speed or quickness anymore to be put on an island like that. I am really pulling for us to go get Roderick Hood, but if Clements ends up not getting "Champ Bailey money" I think he's somebody we would have to seriously consider getting.

S - Bullocks regressed a little bit. Terrible hands, and always seemed to be taking bad angles to the ball. I still believe he can be good, but this will be a big year for him. I also think Harper is going to be a stud.

K - keep Carney. The guy made 23 out of 25 last season. That's dang good. Cundiff needs to be cut immediately, he provided nothing to this team. He was signed because he had a "big leg," but he couldn't even get the ball into the end zone on kickoffs.

RE: What would you do?

Cut cut cut cut cut

QB I would not mind a fourth rounder going that direction. But Sean has done so good with FA so far I am not going there.
RB is pretty much set. Stecker is pretty much on the fence this year. Karney needs a back up on the PS or one that can special teams.
WR Hornets nest. All the WR are too young to be left on thier own. Horn is the mentor on the team. So a solid veteran is needed. As for the unit I know the stats are great but I am not really all that happy with the play. Alot of drops. Drew should have the yardage record. Signing a FA (ie Curtis) or Drafting a multi functional WR (ie. Higgins) that can take over the return duties from Lewis is very likely to happen. Then you have to think of Henderson and what happens to him. This is what Henderson needs to add to his game or IMO I think he is traded. Besides he still needs to learn to catch.
TE We have a group that can get the job done and thats all I can say about them. Any upgrade here would be more than welcomed.
OL looks good but we have a C with an injury history and a G that is 30. The best pick is a G that can play C and has at least 4 years playing time as a starter. I like A few as you guys know from other posts. RT is an area of concern but not as much as the G position. A solid backup is already in place at RT so another young gun would be nice that can do the T to G shuffle.

JOESAM2002 02-11-2007 12:59 PM

I have to agree with Lumm and Deuce. The only way I cut Joe Horn is if he absolutly refuses to reconstruct his contract.
I do feel a little shakey about our depth at QB. We need someone that we can bring around slowly. We have the teachers.

We need a new corner badly. Either through free agency or the draft, personally I hope it's free agency. At least we know what they can do against top flight players.

As far as Carney, he's better than most kickers in the league already, I can't see gambling on a maybe.

wheelman 02-11-2007 01:46 PM

They need to go after a MLB and/or CB in the FA period. As for DT, I say wait until the draft. I wouldn't mind if they traded up for Okoye (sp).

What would you guys think of moving Fred Thomas to Free Safety?

JOESAM2002 02-11-2007 01:50 PM

I had heard rumors last year that Fred had a hip injury. If that was true, then I have no problem keeping him as long as he's not out there on an island covering.

LivnaLieTimay 02-11-2007 03:35 PM

The first priority is obviously getting a cb. I think we have to spend the money and go after clements. There are so few really good shutdown cb's. Drafting a cb is risky and won't fill our need right away.

I think with our first round pick we either stay where we are and hope Paul Posluszny (seems like the kind of guy our organization is looking for lately- high character, smart, hard working player who also has a lot of talent) is still available or trade up (maybe throw some team our 1st and a mid-late round pick) for Patrick Willis.

Also, I think it is important to try to re-structure horn's contract because we need some experience at that position.

If we still have the money I want us to resign grant. I REALLY like grant but I think clements would be more valuable to our team and I think we need to make a move for clements first. It is a lot easier to find a playmaking de in the draft (use our 2nd round pick on a de if we can't resign grant) or through free agency then it is to find a cb.

CheramieIII 02-16-2007 04:31 PM

Bump. I thought we would've gotten alot more play out of this topic, so here it is again!

DJLengai 02-16-2007 06:14 PM

1) Cut Joe Horn
2) Cut Grant and let Ninkovich and Smith play DE
3) Resign Hollis Thomas
4) Cut Stinchomb and Sign Leonard Davis
5) Sign Nate Clements
6) Sign Adalius Thomas if Nate or Asante are unavailable and draft CB in first
7) Keep Fred Thomas as a nickel back or dime back and an emergency corner
8) Cut Bellamy
9) Cut Stecker and activate Branch (should have done that in NFC Championship)

Boogro 02-16-2007 10:00 PM

Cut Grant? Ninkovich is a pass rusher and plays only on passing downs when healthy. Grant can play both the run and the pass and is still young. Letting him go will leave a major hole that we can't afford to have. I say sign Grant, Hollis Thomas, restructure horn (if not Cut) if cut, sign Bennett or Curtis. Sign 2 corners, and re-sign Stinch if possible. At MLB, N. Harris, Fletcher, or Edwards would be fine. I'd like to see a good leader on D at that spot.

I liked what I seen out of Strief last year, looks like a good candidate for RT. Bring someone in to compete with him. I think weshould fill our roster as best as we can then draft BAP.

Bobaganoosh 02-16-2007 10:18 PM

If the Saints lose grant, then DE becomes priority number 1. Boogro nailed on Ninkovich...he is a situational guy that will not survive as an every down DE. Bringing in Edwards to man the middle and take charge of our defense to me is the key. Having the veteran leadership in the middle of our defense would help out tremendously...so what if he only has 3 years left in him...the next 3 years are when the Saints are going to be primed to make a run at the Super Bowl...as for Stinchcomb, offer him a fair deal, if he wants to much then let him walk and plug in Strief. Resign Grant, bring in edwards, sign Rod Hood and make a play for Daniel Graham, then draft the best DT or corner available in round 1.

hagan714 02-17-2007 08:28 AM

hagan714 02-17-2007 08:51 AM

forgot Thomas is due an additional 1 million in march so we will soon know. bye bye

SaintPauly 02-17-2007 05:20 PM

Cut Thomas for God's sake!!! That's all I ask.... that and bring back fetch monster..........: )

ScottF 02-17-2007 07:59 PM

--Stinchcomb would have to have pretty big balls to actually try and negotiate a better deal. He has been an embarressment for 4 years and was the weak link on an improved line. Not just a first rounder, but we actually traded down to get him- scary. Strief can do just as well.

-- I say do what it takes to get Bly. Keep Fred as a nickel, or Craft, whatever. If the kids stay healthy at safety, def backfield could actually be a strength.

-- I wouldn' be worried about QB. There are always a ton of cap casualities, and even though the top 5 QBs are solid, I don't know who you get in rounds 6-7. BTW--Whatever happened to McPherson?

-- The Saints should have their choice of a top defensive player. I see a lot of QBs and RBs going early, leaving 3--4 decent DB's and linebackers.

- On Horn, sign him if it's reasonable. Again, he's 35 and has 5 TDs in 2 years

Boogro 02-17-2007 09:06 PM

Well I just read on another website that he won't take a pay cut so I doublt that Horn will be back.

AP reports New Orleans Saints HC Sean Payton said it was too early to talk about free agency — or the status of veteran WR Joe Horn, who has struggled with injuries for two years and would be due about $4 million next season if the Saints decided not to waive him. Horn said he would not accept a pay cut to stay in New Orleans. “Can I still play at a Pro Bowl level? Yes. ... The film don’t lie. And my receiver coach knows what I can do, and I know coach Payton knows what I can do, Horn said. “But I won’t be surprised if my agent got a phone call or I got a phone call and they told me I was going in a different direction. Then I’d clear out my locker, I’d say farewell to the fans here that I love dearly and they love me, and I’d put on another helmet. If the Saints do part ways with some prominent players, Payton believes the franchise is in a stronger position to attract new ones through free agency than last season, when the team appeared to be early in the rebuilding phase with a rookie coach and a roster in flux.

Strong opinions. Most of which I disagree with! :D

Quote:

2) Cut Grant and let Ninkovich and Smith play DE
Grant's a UFA so there's no need to cut him. Ninkovich is unproven, and Grant really stepped up to the plate last year. I'd consider franchising and trying to spend the offseason working out a long term deal.

Quote:

3) Resign Hollis Thomas
Total agreement here.

Quote:

4) Cut Stinchomb and Sign Leonard Davis
Davis is soft. I mean the guy was a #2 pick! I like how the line has gelled. Other than shoring up the backups, I'd leave it alone.

Quote:

5) Sign Nate Clements
The guy wants something in the ballpark of $7 million a year. The very fact that he wants Champ Bailey money when it's clear he's not Champ Bailey worries me.

I think there may be an opportunity here. There are a couple of disgruntled decent cover corners out there that won't break the bank yet will be a significant upgrade over Fred "Gameshow" Thomas. Reports have Dre Bly of Detroit seeking a trade and Fred Smoot wanting out of Minnesota because both teams have coaches who are Tampa 2 disciples. The fact that Gibbs wants to play a scheme with press man to man coverage may end up being an advantage in terms of getting a better player out on that island.

Quote:

6) Sign Adalius Thomas if Nate or Asante are unavailable and draft CB in first
Thomas is a stud no doubt. But how well will he fit in our defensive scheme? He coming from a 3-4 with big guys at the DT position that allow the LBs to operate clean. The Saints are probably not going to get there this year. So how effective would Thomas be at the MLB position in traffic? I don't know.

As for drafting a CB, I agree to a point. I fear though at 27th you're not going to be able to secure a top cover corner, which is what our defensive scheme demands.

Quote:

7) Keep Fred Thomas as a nickel back or dime back and an emergency corner
Agreed. Fred isn't a bad CB (ok stop laughing now!) It's just that Gibbs wanted him to do something that's outside of his capabilities, which is cover #1 receivers by himself on the outside. In the nickel he'll be better.

Quote:

8) Cut Bellamy
We keep cutting Bellamy. He keeps coming back. He was an upgrade over Stotmire and Scott. So why not cut one of them and have Bellamy as the reserve safety?

Quote:

9) Cut Stecker and activate Branch (should have done that in NFC Championship)
Probably. I think the question is whether or not Branch can be the complete back required. That means rushing the ball, blocking when necessary, picking up the blitz, and catching the ball out of the backfield.

I'm not disagreeing with the last point. I'm just unsure if Branch is ready to do everything required.

It is unfortunately the most accurate scenario. I would like to see Joe back until he retires a Saint but he's gotta give it up for the team. He will only prosper in the end if he does. He has to realize this team is only three or four good moves away from hoisting the Lombardi and there are receivers who will like to be catching chunks of stats from Drew on their way to a prosperous career. no?
Joe would be wise now to carefully consider his place with Saints history. Choose between restructuring, success and community or maybe a huge contract, getting huirt and sitting on foreign sidelines for teams that reshuffle him into retirement.

hagan714 02-18-2007 10:15 AM

Funny how much things change in a year. The idea of cutting Horn last year would have gotten you killed. Now most people think it is okay. gezzzz
Look at the WR and you have nothing but young pups playing. Only one has stepped up and is now considered a starter. But hey closton can do only so much. Closton and Henderson both still have alot to prove. Horn is still the only set of sure hands on the team. The best games Drew and the Saints had was when all 3 were on the field. Even the running game benifited. Sure Horn is up there in age and injuries hurt him. A torn groin is nothing to laugh at. The only thing that heals it is time. Time that is alot longer than 6 weeks.
Do we keep him? It's to early to tell. I would not mind keeping him and giving up a free agent in order to do so. Medical exam is the only way to tell. Give him a new contract and a large check for doing it. Then let him get performance pay. problem solved.
If we cut him then drafting a WR becomes more important. If you draft one high he better play alot better than Closton. In two years we are faced with resign Closton. He will want to be shown the money even more if he is the Teams top WR at that point. Nasty can of worms.

Bobaganoosh 02-18-2007 01:56 PM

That is just the way the game is managed now...Horn hasnt been healthy for 2 years. He is 35 years old and his contract situation is not even the same thing as what Colston's is going to be in 2 years so i dont like that argument. the saints will aproach him to restructure and to be honest, he should do it because he is not going to get big money from anyone so why not stay here and play for a championship? The way our offense is set up, we dont have a true number 1 or number 2 receiver...we just throw it to whoever is open. Henderson will be going into his 4th year, Colston will have a full year of weights and studying the playbook, the Saints will bring in some middle tier WR like a Bobby Wade and they will draft another. Plus Copper will probably be back. The WR's will be fine with or without Joe Horn.

D24pick 02-18-2007 03:00 PM

QB-Sign Rohan Davey or Anthony Wright, better to have three QB's than two K's

RB-Sign Samkon Gado. Makes us even more deadly, trade Stecker, and try Branch or trade/relsease

FB-We're set here, I still re-sign Joseph, very nice on ST's

TE-Cut Conwell. Draft Chandler or Hannah. Sign Stevens, Graham, or Johnson, either will do. Release John Owens

WR-Cut Joe Horn, sad but has to be done. Sign Bennett and Wilford. Draft Jacoby Jones in the 4th or 3rd

OL-Try to upgrade over Stinch, if cant, re-sign

DL-Try to re-sign Grant, if wants to much, I go get a youbger just as talented and productive Justin Smith. Cut Leslie, and Whitehead. Re-sign Holis and Lake, and Sign Redding.

LB-Cut Simoneau not Clark. Then look to Draft

CB-Samuel is gone, Clements wants too much. I try at Bly, but not before I go and get Macklin and Hood. Afterwards the Draft in the 3rd round

S-Keepers towards Scott. Everyone kills at the guy, but never notices that when he's healthy he's a beast at S. Great back-up to Bullocks or Harper. Cut Stout, Bellamy, and maybe Gleason, too, he isnt safe. Then the draft is where I look, maybe the 5th or 4th rounds

K-Cut Cundiff and keep Carney until before the season starts. Draft or sign Nick Folk, and let one of the most accurate kickers ever in Carney coach him into greatness, then cut Carney, too

P-Weatherford is good and young, not to mention aware and fast, then cut Berger

Draft

1 LB Willis-extremely talented player. Has the atheltic ability to play any LB position on the field. Has the look of Ray Lewis, love him here
Notables:Not gonna say Poz, If Willis is taken, and Timmons drops, this is a hard pick. If both are gone, I go Beason, Davis or Alexander(an underrated Timmons)

2 CB Marcus McCauley-he'll drop to us b/c of his stock is falling due to his practices. Has all the talent to be a starter for us, would be one of the best nickel CB's in the league, rookie or not
Notables:MeBane looks good here as well, if he isn't here we like Ross, Jackson, or Wright

3 DT Ryan McBean-really high on this guy. Praying for him to go to us, exactly what we need at DT. Can stuff the run with no problem and is a nice pass rusher, a good compliment to Starks and Young
Notables:No way he doesn't fall here. He is way underrated and is awesome. Other players would be good here are MeBane and Chandler

3 CB Fred Bennett-love this kid. Has the frame and speed of a WR and can run with almost anyone. Big and solid, and can lay a hit as well, would be really nice in case we can't snab a descent FA CB
Notables:Another player that would be nice here is Jonathan Wade, just has better hands and more speed. Not much experience though, and Josh Wilson

4 TE Clark Harris-amazing kid, and is a reciveing threat. Not as much as a blocker but can get the job done, would start out as back-up and can contibute big on this team.
Notables:maybe WR here, like Higgins, Hill, or Clowney but not yet

4 WR Jacoby Jones-just what Payton loves. The guy's stock is making a sprint upward, wont last like Colston did, definitely like him here. So much of a sleeper, big frame the Matt Jones type
Notables:Marvin White would be great here, but he wont last. Maybe Jarrett Hicks with a good combine or Ryne Robinson, who is a big sleeper

5 DT Antonio Johnson-this guy is a beast. He has the strength and quickness to thrive in the NFL. Teams say he's not all a pass-rusher, I like em in a rotation with Starks, Young, and McBean
Notables:would look for a Safety but so many teams need defensive backs, I like Gattis or Daniels

6 LB Zach Latimer-saw this guy play almost every game and is a beast. All the attention goes to Rufus Alexander but he is a darn solid LB, that wont go early in the draft.
Notables:Michael Okwo is really talented and I think can back-up Fujita better than Fincher. Fincher is better at middle, Okwo has the speed and strength, Nate Harris looks good too

6/7(from ATL) DE Jacob Ford-The guy is very productive. Makes plays when its time to, played for a mild school but still is a very good player, and better than Whitehead.
Notables:Justin Hickman outta UCLA is pretty good as well here in the draft. Another player worth taking is Daren Stone at safety, the guy has talent

UDFA:
Nick Folk-screw all the talk about Mason Crosby let ATL have em. This guy booted a 62 yarder, not that accurate but we could let him work with the coaches and Carney. No more kickoff problems

faldhamen 02-18-2007 04:06 PM

Off season moves:

QB. Sign back up QB for sure.. pick up some one that come start if Brees is down or you want to rest him - J. Garcia.

HB. Prepare R. Bush this off season on more striaght running and to find the hole quicker. Keep Duece loose and ready to punch it through the line. Trade stecker and put Branch on the team.

FB. Karney is our man.

TE. Sign Graham if possible or pick up Wiggle (MIN), or Utech (Colts). Stay away from E. Johnson even he is good .. he can not stay healthy.

WR. Reconstruct J. Horn contract and keep him as Saints for the rest of his career. Add D. Bennett he is a great WR.

OL. Resign Stinchcomb. our Unit is solid last year so why change. I would draft OL though for the future.

DT. Resign H. Thomas. Pick up Redding out of Detroit Lions with trade 4th round if possible, if not sign V. Holliday.

DE. Resign Grant, keep Ninkovich in rotation and build up his skills even more.

LB. Pick up P. willis in the draft if possible. Sign Edwards and resign D. Clark.
Draft another OLB in the first day.

CB. Major things needed here. Sign R. Manning Jr. (Chicago) and Hood (Phil. Eagles), Draft CB in the second round or the first round. Cut F. Thomas.

S. Harper & Bullock can be better with time.

K. Carney for one more year unless there is a better kicker out there.

P. Weatherford & Berger.

KR. Resign M. Lewis for one more year and draft speedy WR or CB to start handling KR & PR duties.

SaintPauly 02-19-2007 02:27 AM

I'm just curious, as to where you guys are getting your draft information from. I can't find anything, that doesn't require me to join some "insiders" club.
