Question: draft/free agency, cart/horse?

I see a lot of draft threads out and about. Isn't that putting the cart before the horse? Can you realistically determine what you draft needs are before diving into free agency?

For example it's widely known that Dre Bly of Detroit wants out. If the Saints can enact a trade for Bly before the draft do the Saints still realistically look at drafting a CB in the 1st round?

Just curious.

i say yes on a few reasons

1. FAs are generally overpriced and overvalued by themselves and their agents

2. the draft makes up a great deal of your future roster so looking at every player as early as possible is very important... its one of the reasons the combine is held before the start of Free Agency

3. signing players during FA is just as much as a non guarantee that the player will perform up to potential as the draft, only you pay more...

I believe that Payton will try to, either, pickup a primetime CB or a Hall Of Fame LB and then build the defense around that person, much like last year was the Offense off-season and Drew Brees was the big name for us this year will be defense and either Adalius Thomas or Nate Clements, and then start drafting around that guy, especially in the later rounds. I would also like to state that what ever Payton does, I will agree with Payton and wait to watch his magic duiring the season.

In Bly's chase you would want some young guy to play with him. you are getting a one contract in the trade. Just incase he does not sign an extention. As for drafting a CB in the first it all depends is he worth the money of a first rounder in that slot? that were I wonder if we get stuck at 27 reaching for a player that fills a need and is skilled will the fans be happy with a less popular pick? OL for example

I think the fans might gripe a little, but I believe Payton has a free pass this year. Bringing in Brees, and the starting 3 LBs, and of course finding Colsom all make him untouchable for a while. Having Reggie drop in his lap certainly didn't hurt either.

The bottom line is that the defense needs to improve, especially when it comes to the big plays. Payton has to find a way to bring in at least 2, maybe 3 new starter, be it FA or the draft.

What have you done for me lately ? Yo, DO NOT QUESTION; Coach Payton and the staff about what draft picks they choose, it doesn't matter who they choose, they showed their worth last off-season. How soon do we forget the tragedy of 2005, the rebuilding of 2006, the situation that they came into, they rebuilt NOTHING into the NFC SOUTH DIVISION CHAMPIONS. I have all the confidence in this coaching staff and organization to do the right thing.
