Mike Garafolo, of the Star-Ledger, reports the New Orleans Saints were one of the teams mentioned by agent Drew Rosenhaus as a likely destination for unrestricted free-agent PK Olindo Mare (Dolphins).



I'm a little suprised by all of this interest by the Saints in a kicker considering Carney's performance last year. I thought it was an improvement over the year (or two) before.

I saw two other teams were interested in him. That surprises me too as I have never been all that keen on him. I guess he's alright, but it seems like he's a hot commodity all the sudden.

If I had to choose between Mare, Carney and Vanderjackass, I pick Carney everytime.

I thought at the end of the season that Carney would be around for another season.

nothing against Carney, but for god sakes you can not carry two kickers. I like John and wish him all the luck in the world for him and his family. Now to fork over a 6th round pick for Mare I still have trouble with it. I am going to call on God's sake one more time.

I'm not a big Mare fan either but hopefully he'll regain form kicking indoors. I guess we don't have to carry two kickers anymore.

First, let me say that it's nice to be back. Second, I'm not sure that this was a wise move considering that Carney was 23 of 25, with one of the two misses from beyond 50 yards, and Mare was 26 of 36, with 5 misses from beyond the 50. Even if you remove the 50+ yard misses from the equation, that still leaves Carney at 23 of 24 (96%) and Mare at 26 of 31 (84%).

I am not sure if it's a good idea to get rid of a player who was 23-25 in field goals. Hopefully, Mare will be just as good. It sickens me too that the Saints gave up a 6th round pick for Mare. The Saints did have major issues with kickoffs, so maybe this will turn out good. The happiest guy on the roster should be Steve Weatherford. This move pretty much secures his job with the Saints. I was betting that they would keep Mitch Berger since he is pretty good with kickoffs. Still might happen, but the move to go with Mare makes Weatherford more likely to win the job. I will miss John Carney. He was an excellent kicker for the Saints, and is a great person. Hopefully, he will not sign with the Falcons and kick us out of the playoffs... LOL.

I read somewhere (ESPN I think) that Mare has more touchbacks than anyone else active.

Yep...... and THAT is the reason for the signing.

I have mixed fellings about Carney. Lasy year he was good on points but week on kickoffs. He recovered well from that extra (not) point after the "relay".

Carney said kinda nice words too when he left. I guess he liked his time with us.

Mare will be able to put up Carney-like numbers kicking in domes 10-12 times a year.

Think about the touchback factor. EVERY one of Carney's KO's were returned, which is a potential TD or injury on every kick, not to mention starting at the 25-30, instead of the 20.

My issue is Mare's price tag- $2 million. Hopefully that will even out, since we will now have rookies and cheaper vets on special teams

I thought Carney did really well last year. I am a little weary of Mare and his numbers. I think Carney deserved another year.

its clear why the signing was made, and im glad that i wont have to hold my breath everytime we kick off.

Carney really lost some leg strength last year and Mare has better leg strength I think its a good pick up by the saints....

A good pick up, you save money by having only one kicker and the touchbacks will be something we haven't seen since Morten Andersons.

First of all, I'm a big John Carney fan and I wish him well. But, the game of football is about field position, having to go 80yds as apposed to 60-65yds is a hell of a lot harder. Mare had more touch backs last year than any other kicker and when it wasn't a tb his hang time was ridiculous, so all in all it was worth a 6th rd pick.
