Hypothetical Situation
 

Assuming that we get players at positions that we are looking for an upgrade at in the early and mid rounds of the draft. Do you pull a Dallas-Drew Henson move and take a shot in a late round for Jeff Samardija and the rights to him if he decides to give the NFL a shot?

Its a good question, but whoever drafts him would only have his rights for 1 year...then he would be drat eligible again. I think if he does give up baseball, it would be a few years down the road.

Yeah. I thought I remember hearing that he was hoping to be able to play both sports professionally but the $8 mill the Cubs gave him included a clause that he would exclusively play baseball.

That's a very interesting idea BR. Yea I definately would. We all know he would have been a lock for the first round. He's very Drew Bennett-ish.

Ed McCaffery was a BEAST. Best stiff arm I've ever seen coming from a wide receiver.

Every once in a while those late round gambles pay off- Bo jackson in the 7th comes to mind.

Usually they don't- McPherson wasn't a safe 'bet' in any round

We have enough draft picks this year to take a gamble, maybe 6th. Last year our heralded 5th rounder ended up getting cut, while our 7th was a star, so who knows?

If we are happy after the 5th, then I say take a chance.

Yes i am sure that you only hold their rights for one year. It is the same situation as when a player gets drafted, doesnt agree to the contract, sits out the whole year, and goes back into the draft again. Whomever drafts him has his rights until the day before the draft next year.

Most professional contracts are now written to keep players from playing two or more sports.

Nah the one year bit of owning his rights kills the deal.

I'd hate to see us waste a draft pick. We're to close. Draft someone that will show up and let's see what he can do.

It's like how Dirk Nowitski is compared to Larry Bird(!) or this white guy or that white guy.

i don't think the writer was looking at a race thing. I think it was his way of remembering someone's name....McCaffery. This board likes almost everybody. Except me. I hate everybody equally!
