Again....I'm OK with the pick since he did burn Chris Houston a few times in last year's game. Offense is the strenght of the Saints and additional help at WR can't hurt. In fact, this may be the BPA (Best Position Available). I wouldn't want to think about a reciever getting hurt and being thin there for the year.

Good call, if Henderson or Copper get injured, or Patton doesn't work out, the Saints have a good young receiver to put in. We may not see how important this kid is until 2008 when he has a chance to start opposite Colston.

Not Surprised At All
 

I see payton had the Cowboys surprised, jumping up to take a D player. Good move... keep our O explosive with many weapons. He has been building D via free agency. AND we aren't done yet.

I'm OK with the choice, as long as he can catch the ball better than the last number 1 that we chose from Tenn. It was a surprise with the 5 - 6 players I had on my board.

Glad it wasn't Chris Houston -- I think he's too small for the NFC South. Could have gotten a 300+ pounder to stuff the middle of the D-line with Branch, there were still 2 backers left in Harris and Posluszny, and a TE like Olsen could have been the answer to the Bears' cover-2. Now it looks like Olsen is gonna be a Bear himself.

Now let's work on the D with the next few rounds.

i know we talked about wide recievers probably being the bpa because of the depth this yr......deep down i believe the saints would have taken justin harrell but gb jumped on him at 16..... so, here we are..........you just have to believe this was paytons choice.......i'm happy.........

i really liked chris houston and i figured we would grab a receiver in the later rounds, but i'm not unhappy with this pick, i actually watched meachem play alot last year, and he is definitely a talented guy...this just makes our offense better than it already is and being that we were ranked #1 last year...well thats pretty good

3. Robert Meachem, WR, 6020, 214, 4.39, Tennesse
This youngster came on this past season thanks to a move from "X" to flanker, where he became the Volunteers' new go-to receiver. He used a combination of size, speed and slippery moves to elevate himself to the upper echelon of receivers. He has a pretty solid build and the frame to bulk up further and he knows how to use it.... Shows some power and he'll break tackles. Robert has long arms, big hands and will snatch the ball out of the air. He catches the ball with his hands and has terrific balance and agility in the open field, where he'll accelerate without losing any of his top-end speed making him a big play threat in the vertical passing game. He had a few drops when trying to adjust to the ball, but he has good leaping skills and sticks his landings along the sideline. Meachem is a red-zone threat especially along the back line of the end zone. He's also a willing blocker and was recognized by teammates as being well-liked and mature.
Drops some balls due to a lack of concentration. Is not very tough or physical so he does not get off the line well versus the jam. Nor will he work across the middle much. He needs time to work on the technique and still has to master the nuances of his craft. Has some minor durability concerns.
The wild card among the receivers, coming off his best season and still has some upside.He's somewhat of a finesse player who has the physical tools you look for, maybe similar to Donte Stallworth

I'm going to go ahead and come out and say it: I'm not a big fan of this selection. Yes we needed another WR, but in terms of players on the board who could have helped us I just don't understand how we passed up on guys like Branch, Poz, David Harris, and even Chris Houston. I understand we're thin at WR, but we played pretty much the entire season last year without Joe Horn, so losing him to Atlanta shouldn't make us hit the panic button and say "Oh my goodness what are we going to do?" Colston, Henderson, and Copper were a helluva trio, and helped us become the #1 offense in the NFL. So why did we feel like we could ignore our DT, LB, and CB holes AGAIN. I just don't get it. In terms of trying to improve a unit, why would we try to improve the best offense in the league when our defense leaves A LOT to be desired?

O and I forgot to mention, Meachem has been said to have a lot of problems running routes, blocking, and going over the middle.
