WhoDat205 05-17-2007 08:25 AM

I'll give my starting line-ups for active players (based on the last few seasons):

QB - Manning
RB - LDT (I refuse to call him LT, There's only one of those)
FB - Karney
WR - Ocho Cinco, Steve Smith
T - Walter Jones, Jonathan Ogden
G - Steve Hutchinson, Alan Fanaca
C - Jeff Saturday
TE - Antonio Gates

D - (4-3)

DE - Peppers, Will Smith
DT - Tommie Harris, Hollis Thomas
OLB - Demarcus Ware, Adalius Thomas
MLB - Urlacher
S - Troy Polamalu, Ed Reed
CB - Champ Bailey, DeAngelo Hall

K - Vinatieri
P - Berger (With that team, I don't plan on punting)
KR - Hester (Sorry, Reggie)

HC - Gotta go with Belichik

I gotta say, that defense would be ridiculous. Teams would average negative yards per carry.

papz 05-17-2007 09:55 AM

QB - Steve Young
RB - Barry Sanders
FB - Tony Richardson
WR - Ed McCaffery, Steve Smith, Ocho Cinco
TE - Todd Heap

DT - Marcus Stroud, John Henderson
LB - Shawne Merriman, Sam Mills/Ray Lewis, Keith Brooking
CB - Deion Sanders, Champ Bailey
S - Ed Reed, Shaun Taylor

P - Todd Sauerbrun

Good luck trying to score on that defense.

Yes I could, but then you would have triple digit scores every game and probably a couple of dead people too.

I gotta give Deion credit. He talked a LOOOOOOT of smack, but come sunday, he backed that stuff up. Like you said, every punt could go for 6 and QB's knew better than to throw to his side. Maybe he didn't hit like Rod Woodson, but he was a phenomenal football player.

SS-Jack Tatum- Can you say headhunter!
FS- Paul Krause-Who you may ask? He has 81 career ints from his FS position

K-Adam Vinitieri-Who else would you want to kick a game winning kick?
P-Ray Guy- no explanation needed

KR-Billie White Shoes Johnson-Smile everytime I think of him running wild after
a kick.
PR-D.Sanders-Come on admit it. Every time he returned a punt you thought
he had a chance to score.

Now these are best choices I have seen so far. I can not think of a much better OL, secondary and special team players. Conrad was my all time favorite.

hagan714 05-18-2007 01:09 PM

JIM TAYLOR was a saint. Got to remeber some of us are old timers. I watch all these guys play. except one but like I said my dad always made me watch any tape on the guy. I would love to see some of todays greats play some of the old timers with the old rules. The new guys would crying foul on every play. Thet would get killed. the game has gotten softer. I will come up with a list of players that are lesser players. lol

I guess I'm a youngster, but today's players would murder the old timers...even without the sophisticated playbooks. Ray Lewis? Urlacher? Reggie? Deuce? There's no debate. A guy like Julius Peppers would do whatever he wanted to Art Shell. DeMarcus Ware would make Jack Lambert look like a JV-er. Ocho Cinco would make old school secondaries look like swiss cheese. They're just too big, too strong, too fast.

Oh ye of little faith. If only you knew of what you speak. Don't go to the bank on your statement. if you never saw guys like Lambert,Ed To Tall Jones,Merlin Olsen,Jack Tatum and a few others play you might want to check them out first.

P.S. I was glad to see someome put Jim Otto on their list.

saintsrule 05-18-2007 03:12 PM

QB---Warren Moon
RB---Barry Sanders
WR---Randy Moss
TE---Shannon Sharpe
FB---Lorenzo Neal
T--- Willie Rolf

LB---Lawrence Taylor
CB---Deion Sanders

hagan714 05-18-2007 08:38 PM

So true Joesam.
Otto was a beast.
I do not see the guys today adjusting to well to being ruffed up like in the old days. Today if there is blood it makes ESPN. Back then blood was part of the field. Thats why the rules were changed, way to many perment injuries and long term side effects. They really did try to take your head off. Clothes lines and crack back blocks just to name a few. God I do miss some of those hits.
I wonder how some of the great WR today could handle the old fashion bump and run coverage.

cadilacin 05-19-2007 12:33 AM

respect

I gotta give yall some respect for yall appreciation and knowledge about the history of the game. I finally joined this site because I liked the knowledge that most of yall have.

About the old school Katz... I love em too! Sammy Baugh, whites shoes, Deacon Jones, too tall, Lambert, Gale Sayer's (Reggie's Clone), Jack Tatum, the list goes on. I didn't name many ol' schoolers on my list simply because my favorites or the ones that I watch the most of. Its hard to compare the different era's.
The guys back then were meaner and nastier. The guys of today or faster, and bigger (i don't know if there stronger).

But there are guys that can cross the generations. Ray Lewis would love to play that kind of physical football that they played back then. So would joey porter, Jon Runyan, and plenty more guys. And i'm sure tha Lambert, Gale Sayers, Jim Brown, and Jonny Unitas would be able to dominate in todays game.

I just respect em all!!

All yall katz put together some MEAN teams!! I just wish we could watch them play!!!!!!

REAL TALK!

saintsfan1976 05-19-2007 01:22 AM

Hagan... your thoughts???

hagan714 05-19-2007 06:17 AM

There is a big factor today that was not around in the old days and that is the money. Alot of the rule changes were made for health reasons but some (IMO more than some) of the driving force is due to all the money involved. Protect your investment. Back then the alot of the college guys who played football were passing on the chance to make more money with their degrees. They loved the game. Mind set was different. The times were ruffer. There was no political correctness and such. A mind set. I know there are players today that would love nothing more than go back to the old style and would thrive.

Size was mentioned and I wonder if alot of these big boys would survive without all the TV time outs. Just like when you played high school ball the play did not stop. I can go on and on about the rule changes and the nagative effect TV has had on the game. Not only in football but in all major sports. Changing the game for ratings never sat right with me as a fan of the games. The record books would have thousands of (*) next to records to reflect the changes. If I had my way.

When the owners change a rule think about how the change effects the game. I am a traditionalist. Even with the unies. I would love to see our throw back jerseys at the superbowl. What a statement of arrival that would make for the saints organization. Even if it was to just the jersey running out of that tunnel. They could change before kick off. God knows there is plenty of time. It is just a dream. An old dream.

All in all I love the list of players here. I put mine together to give the old school there just due and stir the s*** a bit.

Saintfan there is some serious Mississippi man love going here. nice list. You can not help it if Mississippi farm boys make good ball players. But you may, just maybe, want to do some deep self reflection about it. :p

cadilacin welcome again if I did not greet you before. Always need fresh ideas and view points.

TheDeuce 05-20-2007 08:50 PM

QB-Peyton Manning (obviously great, but also goofy as hell, gotta love it)
RB-Deuce (my favorite player in the league)
FB-Lorenzo Neal
WR-Randy Moss and Wayne Chrebet (even though he ain't still playing)
TE-Desmond Clark
OT-Roaf and I used to be a huge Tony Boselli fan
G-definitely Larry Allen (how many times did he win that bench press contest in the Pro Bowl?) and Fanaca
C- LeCharles (honestly feel bad for him, he was an up and coming star)

DE-Charles Grant and Peppers (the guy is a freak, plain and simple)
DT-Warren Sapp (nasty in his prime, didn't he win an MVP?) and Grady Jackson (loved his fatness)
OLB- Joey Porter (mean as hell)
MLB- I love Ray Lewis
CB-Al Harris (always wanted to see him with MM in New Orleans, I love the double Predator look)
S-Brian Dawkins
K-Bill Gramatica (kickers are usually a joke, and there are so many funny things about this guy: hurt himself celebrating, his name is bill when his last name is gramatica and his brother's is Mar-teen, has the biggest nose in the league, etc etc)
P-Ryan Plackemeier

cadilacin 05-20-2007 09:02 PM

TheDeuce...You gotta be a kool kat, and know the game of football if you can appreciate the greatness of "my boy" AL Harris. I love em too. Not as gifted as some of the top athletes at the position, but you'll be hard pressed to find a more fierce competitor at any position.

Nice list!! I also like how you got Lorenzo Neal blocking for your boy Deuce.
