Worst to first: Ranking the NFL off-seasons

And then there was May ...

After three months of high-profile coaching changes, general manager switches, scouting combines, free-agent signings, cuts, waiver wire pickups, contract negotiations, franchise tags, draft stock rises, draft stock slips, trades, franchise tags, players who hate their franchise tags, and a whole lot of Brady Quinn talk — the busiest time of the 2007 off-season is finally behind us.

While there are certainly some loose ends still waiting to be tied up (ie. Trent Green, Lance Briggs, and Keyshawn's future), it's about that time. Yes, the time to rank the 2007 NFL off-seasons. 32 teams, 32 slots. Where'd your team finish up? Let's find out.

8. New Orleans Saints

The most dangerous offense in the league got even more weapons this off-season. The defense beefed up too. On O, New Orleans lost its long-time leader Joe Horn, but quickly replaced him with Robert Meachem, their first round selection out of Tennessee. Eric Johnson, a solid pass catching tight end from the Niners, signed for one year as well. Antonio Pittman was arguably the most intriguing fourth round selection of the entire draft. Just another playmaker for Sean Payton. On defense, New Orleans added former Bengals starters Brian Simmons and Kevin Kaeshivarn, as well as Colts Super Bowl stud Jason David. Re-signing Jon Stinchcomb and Terrence Copper were big moves too.

Biggest gain: Brian Simmons, LB
Biggest loss: Joe Horn, WR

Are they in better shape than they were in January? The NFC Championship Game is a pretty good place to end up. Tough to say the Saints are going to do better than that this year, but they certainly addressed some sore spots on their defense in the off-season. Simmons provides some star-quality to the linebacker spot and David is an upgrade from Fred Thomas as corner. Horn was the lifeblood and voice of that locker room. Meachem, however, may be the more effective wideout.

Funny with little madia attention through out this we once again end up getting top marks in the end. Man Shawn is doing some thing right but he is sure making it hard to find things to post.

:bandg: We made some smart football decisions this offseason. Whether or not we can rate them good or bad is yet to be seen. Sean Payton seems to be very competent at finding and developing talent. If he comes close to what he accomplised last offseason, we'll go 12-4. Having Deuce, Brees, Reggie, Colston, and that strong O-line, our offense will be super competitive. It's the additions on defense is what we have to cross out fingers about. I'm just hoping that the front office stays busy. It's exciting to see that we are trying to be aggressive about winning.

With an upgrade at 3 starting defensive positions and no losses other than Horn, I see us much better than 8th.

Of course, that may not transfer to on-field success, but on paper we are significantly better.

The biggest thing to me is not simply the additions we've made, but the return of many units as a whole. We did not change over too many starters at positions, and if we did, the former starters are still in depth positions. It's scary bringing in a new starter at ley positions without any back up plan. I'm confident the upgrades are just that.

I too cannot see us being any less effective offensively and even more so on the defense.

You boys are dead on!! All of our off season additions appear to be exactly what is needed to improve on the success we had last season. I'm trying to temper my enthusiasm because we haven't "seen" the new guys perform in our system. And we all know that the defense left a lot to be desired anyway! But I do feel like there is on thing that I can get a little excited about...the offensive line!! Last year they played great. They are pretty much in still in tact. And I think we've added some talented backups and competition through the draft and free agency. With the skill positions that we have behind that o-line, we should be a more efficient and explosive offense this year. But we still have to play Dee!!!

We'll table D-Line talk for another time.

OH JOY does that mean we'll be higher in the power rankings??? nevermind the Super Bowl.

You also have to take into account players that 'drop off', didn't live up to expectations... and let alone other teams performances.

I guess thats why they play the games...
