Ashamed to call myself a Saints fan.......

....that I didn't know this.

The team's colors, black and gold, symbolized both Mecom's and New Orleans' strong ties to the oil ("black gold") industry.

It is in the early history part.

Was looking for "New" news and came across this.

That's a cool piece of Trivia.

So oil is shameful?

bobcat4u2 06-13-2007 05:46 PM

Bull, colors picked are attractive for marketing generating their own gold

hagan714 06-13-2007 05:54 PM

yep those were the good old days. one shell had something to do with shell. the list of oil companies that operated out of La. back then was long.
So you are right about being ashamed and the oil connection. They have all been chased out of town by the stupid local elected officals. hang your head real low on this one. This has been the problem for years.

FatiusJeebs 06-13-2007 07:02 PM

Screw it!! These are the best colors in the NFL hands down. Lets not even think about changing them. Do you want the saints to to have colors representing amnesty and greenpeace?!?

LongTimeFan 06-13-2007 07:17 PM

The Saints should always be dressed in black and gold, black helmets wouldn't bother me just as long as there's gold somewhere else on their uniforms..

Tobias-Reiper 06-13-2007 08:56 PM

I think Sapper meant he was ashamed he didn't know the origin of his favorite team's colors, and not of what they mean.

Sapper, if it makes you feel better, I didn't know it either :)

Thanks Tobias, and Joe. That is exactly what I meant.

Guys, I love oil. If it wasn't for oil, I couldn't drive my Jepp and fourwheeler.

If that was the case, shouldn't they look like LSU's?

hagan714 06-14-2007 07:20 AM

God nooooooooooooo. Colors and symbols, back then were picked for city. Marketing tshirts and stuff was not the issue. players were making about 45,000 for the season back then on average, if that. Times were different as was the mind set. So was the game come to think about it.

mighty12 06-14-2007 08:37 AM

I didn't know that either. Come to think of it, that didn't even cross my mind.

No problem, some just read what they want to into every post. I knew what you meant.

If that's aimed at me........no problem. I'm thick skinned.

It was partly because of the riches of the oil industry that the Saints are even in existance! Way off base on this one, guy.

This will be the last time I say this.

I AM ASHAMED THAT I DID NOT KNOW WHY OUR COLORS WERE BLACK AND GOLD.

NOT THAT I AM ASHAMED BECAUSE IT IS IN REFERENCE TO OIL.

No big deal Missle. I just don't want people thinking I'm a tree-hugger hippie type.

I know what the oil companies did for LA. My uncle works for them, and has for as long as I can remember.

READ THE WHOLE THING GUYS.

jergensl 06-14-2007 10:16 AM

wikipedia?

are we really trusting info from wikipedia?

do you guys realize that ANYONE can edit wiki and thus it has virtually no credibility?!

i could start a post on deuce saying he eats babies.

im not saying that the team colors didnt come from the cities ties to oil, but i want to see it from a credible source before i believe it.

BlueDevil1978 06-14-2007 10:39 PM

WHAT?!? Duece is eating babies again?!?

hagan714 06-15-2007 05:35 AM

damn and i thought duce stopped the Haz for Baby Fat diet program.

I remember that being said years ago. La was the oil capital back then so it does make sense.

Sorry for getting political earlier. I was a still a bit drunk and fired up from debating with some friends on the decline of NO and who is to blame.

I don't like to get too political, but just what in the heck is going on down there. Having NO ties through my father and my grandfathers sister still lives in NO; I still love the city and the State. Is it Nagin or Blanco or both?

spkb25 06-18-2007 07:53 AM

hey sapper i had no idea, that is a cool piece of history.
