Bucs Bounce Rice
POSTED 6:38 p.m. EDT; LAST UPDATED 6:50 p.m. EDT, July 26, 2007 BUCS BOUNCE RICE In a move that is not a shocker but is still nevertheless surprising, the Bucaneers have cut defensive end Simeon Rice, according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com. Rice was due to earn a base salary of $7.25 million in 2007, the final year of his contract. Per Glazer, the Bucs asked Rice to take a pay cut, and Rice refused. Glazer reports that Rice had checked into camp, and was plucked from dinner for a meeting at which he was informed of the decision. The move creates $7.25 million in cap space for the Bucs, which could be used to sign quarterback Daunte Culpepper, with whom the team met last week. Culpepper reportedly is seeking a one-year deal, which shouldn't be a problem for Gruden, who realizes that this one year could be his last year in Tampa. Look for Rice to be courted by the Detroit Lions, who are coached by former Bucs defensive line coach Rod Marinelli. Other possibilities (as we see it) are the Bears, Steelers, and Vikings. now that is a surprise |
i dont want tampa to have that much depth at qb, so I hope daunte signs with detroit. Especially since reports are that he is 100%,as long as there isnt a 1 yd fumble to run into the inzone i guess we are ok! dribble, dribble, score!!!
Sorry for the bad memory guys. |
With Gaines Adams, Rice's salary and decline in production, the move was inevitable. The guy use to be a beast. Seeing how we need some depth on the D-Line, I wonder if he would be interested in a minimal vet deal so he has a good chance at winning a SuperBowl. I mean crap, he's made a ton of money already throughout his career. Just imagine a Smith, Grant, and Rice rotation... that's sick.
I know I know... it's not going to happen. One can dream though! |
I've got a question for you guys who understand the salary numbers and rules...
Considering Rice just got cut, if we were to sign him, would we have to sign him to the same deal that he had with the Bucs, or would we be able to sign him to a lesser contract? |
We can sign him to whatever we want... as long as it's not below the vets minimum.
|
I would love to see Rice in Black and Gold. Might be to much money but as you guys say. That would be sweeeeeeeeeeeet!
|
what has he done?

yeah I would not complain about that and your right that would be a sick line up but the question is would the saints be willing to deal for him and would he be willing to work a deal considering his career resumay |

If the Saints wants to go that route thay can sell Rice on the revenge factor, he would be able to face the Bucs twice to show them that they made a mistake releasing him. Not to mention the chance of a Superbowl appearance wpuld be something to think about.

Looks like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were a little more excited about signing Gaines Adams than we realized: As training camps begin, a surprise name has suddenly been added to the open market. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday released Pro Bowl defensive end Simeon Rice, FOXSports.com has learned. In a meeting between Rice and Tampa management, the team asked the 12th-year player out of Illinois to take a pay cut. When Rice refused, the team released him. That's some rough treatment for a guy who averaged 13.5 sacks for the Bucs between 2001 and 2005 and made the Pro Bowl twice in that span. Sure, he's 32 years old now, and injuries kept him out of the lineup much of last season, but was that any reason to let him go now? Did team owner Malcolm Glazer decide he needed that cash to pay off some of that massive Manchester United debt or something? Even if he has lost a step, Rice has been too successful in recent years for someone not to take a chance on him. Perhaps his former defensive line coach, Rod Marinelli, will come calling soon. I doubt that Rice's career is over after this. "The more I think about this the more I'm interested in seeing him in a the Black & Gold. Just think about it; he would be in a rotation, him, Grant, and Smith would be fresher, therefore more dominant in the fourth quarter." |
