IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Fullback: Not a lot of drama at this position. Mike Karney owns it. Karney deserved to go to the Pro Bowl last season and should be a strong candidate to make his first trip to Hawaii this year. It's a tribute to his ability that the club brought in only one other player at the position. Kevin Dudley is a smaller version of Karney. He has a great chance to stick on the practice squad.

GET TO KNOW:

TRAMAIN HALL

Position: WR-PR

Height/weight: 5-10, 190

Experience: Free agent

Age: 22

College: North Carolina State

Hometown: Boynton Beach, Fla.

Did you know: Hall played one season with Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers at N.C. State. That year, as a sophomore, he enjoyed his best season with 69 catches for 799 yards and seven touchdowns. . . . Returned two punts for touchdowns at N.C. State. . . . Spent the spring in NFL Europa, where he started for the Cologne Centurions in Germany. . . . Hall's best chance of making the roster is on punt returns, where he is one of four players competing to replace Michael Lewis. "I know that's my opportunity right there," Hall said. "I'm blessed to be with the Saints. This is a great group of guys, and I'm really excited about being on the team. I've just got to go out there and show them what I can do when I get the opportunity."

WHO'S HOT:

ANWAR PHILLIPS

The second-year player from Penn State had a monster practice in the morning, intercepting one pass, forcing a fumble and knocking down another during passing drills. That's the kind of playmaking ability the coaches are looking for from the secondary.

WHO'S NOT:

JAMAL JONES

Jones missed both workouts Sunday because of a strained knee. At a position with 11 players vying for five or six roster spots, every missed practice is a damaging blow, especially for a fringe player like Jones. He'll need to get back on the field quickly.

PLAY OF THE DAY:

If the Saints were playing a H-O-R-S-E competition, Brett Bergstrom easily would have taken honors in the afternoon practice at Veterans Memorial Stadium. On a 45-yard field-goal attempt, he split the uprights with the ball, which then bounced off the roof of an overhanging entrance to a fieldhouse in the end zone and caromed into a temporary basketball goal next to the building. The two-pointer drew a round of cheers from the crowd and several teammates.

INJURY REPORT:

Pos. | Player | Injury

DT | Brian Young | foot

DE | Jon Hamm | quad

WR | Jamal Jones | knee

DE | Anton Palepoi | ankle

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

"(Times-Picayune columnist) Peter Finney wrote a good column about me today. He must be getting old." -- Owner Tom Benson, joking from the sideline while watching the morning workout.

TODAY'S SCHEDULE:

Morning practice, 8:50-11 a.m. at Millsaps' stadium, open to the public. Afternoon, 4:20-6 p.m. at Millsaps' upper field, open to the public.
