Warren trade seems imminent
By Bill Williamson Denver Post Staff Writer Article Last Updated: 08/14/2007 12:37:35 AM MDT San Francisco - The Broncos spent Monday continuing to work the phones in an attempt to trade veteran defensive tackle Gerard Warren. Warren declined to comment, but acknowledged he expects to be traded as soon as today. Teams most interested in Warren appear to be Washington, New Orleans and Tennessee. Indianapolis and the New York Giants declined initial overtures from the Broncos. The Broncos were offered a starter from an undisclosed team for Warren, but since the starter is not at a position of need, talks stalled. They would like a linebacker or wide receiver, and probably would take a second- day draft pick for Warren. Monster Park that the Broncos thought they had a trade completed, but it fell through. He declined further comment but indicated a conclusion to the Warren issue could come today. If a trade is not completed by today, it appears Warren will not accompany the Broncos to Dallas tonight and he could be cut, though the team will hold out for a trade. The Broncos practice with the Cowboys this week before playing Saturday's preseason game at Texas Stadium. Warren was held back in Denver when the Broncos flew to San Francisco on Sunday because of the trade talks. Warren is being shopped because he doesn't fit the team's new two-gap scheme used by Jim Bates, the assistant head coach in charge of defense. Amon Gordon started alongside Sam Adams on Monday in front of Jimmy Kennedy. Gordon, on the practice squad last year, mostly worked with the second and third teams in training camp. He was told Sunday he'd start against the 49ers. "I was taken aback," Gordon said. "It was an incredible feeling to start tonight." Shanahan said the reason to trade Warren is because he thought the defensive front was "10 deep." Meanwhile, reports of the Broncos' interest in Giants holdout defensive end Michael Strahan are false. The Broncos haven't had talks with the Giants, who at this point aren't interested in dealing Strahan. The Denver Post - Warren trade seems imminent Interesting thought. That would allow Lake to back up at DE more. 2nd day pick might be worth it. 6th. |
