Nfl Cuts To Look At?

It is that time of year. Time to scan the waiver wires and see what king of gems the others mans trash can may to offer.

Roderick Green, DE/LB, SF, 6-2 ,274, 4.75
Baltimore RD 5,pick 21, 2004

The San Jose Mercury News reports that 49ers FS Mark Roman (ankle sprain) is expected to play at Denver in Week 17. In addition, DE Roderick Green -- who is making his second tour of duty with the Niners this season -- has impressed coach Mike Nolan. Green has 4.5 sacks in his last five games, including two in Week 16, the first of which KO'd QB Matt Leinart for the season. "He's done a nice job since he's been back," Nolan said. "He's probably our best pass rusher at this point. We've got to keep him around and keep him in there."
(Updated 12/26/2006).

BIO: Named both an all-conference and All American choice as a senior after 63/20/7. Won similar honors the prior year after totaling 51/19/6.

POSITIVES: Athletic and explosive defensive end that may project to linebacker at the next level. Fluid, fast and displays speed in every direction. Moves well laterally, plays with balance and agile. Performed well at the Combine when tested at linebacker. Known as a hard worker that loves to compete.

NEGATIVES: Played at a low level of competition. Has difficulty retaining what he is taught and had problems understanding directions at the Combine.

ANALYSIS: A team leader known to do the extras off the field to become a better player, Green is a good athlete but a project in the NFL. Must learn to play in space and may have difficulty reading or keying the action which could be difficult to overcome.

PROJECTION: Late Fifth Round
What happened since then?

Marcus Maxey, DB, KC, 6-1.5, 192, 4.51
2006 - Rd 5 (154th overall) by the Chiefs

Maxey, who can play both cornerback and safety, was a fifth-round pick of the team in 2006. He bounced from the chiefs to the bears and back to the chiefs last season.

BIO: Posted 24/2/3 as a full-time starter during his senior campaign. Junior numbers were 21/0/3 when he started four games.

POSITIVES: Developing cornerback with excellent size/speed numbers. Easily runs downfield with opponents, quickly locates the ball and displays a good move to the throw. Gets vertical and adjusts to defend the pass. Explosive breaking to the play and has a good burst of closing speed. Fast enough to make up for mistakes and run down opponents.

NEGATIVES: Marginally productive based on limited playing time. Does not consistently use his size as an advantage.

ANALYSIS: Offering outstanding upside potential, Maxey is a raw prospect who should get better with experience. Could be used in a variety of systems and has starting possibilities.

PROJECTION: Early Third Round

Ranking in 2006 draft by NFL Draft Countdown - 2006 NFL Draft Rankings
13. Alan Zemaitis Penn St.
14. Marcus Maxey Miami (FL)

He might be in need of a full PS stint with one club.

Chad Lavalais, DT, Carolina, 6-1, 310
Just thought I would throw him in. Just like everyone else is thowing him out.

Tim Couch, QB

i'd think the saints would be looking for more special teamers, multi-talented, kind of players. unfortunately, they are hard to find.....
but, you never know..................

The crazy thing about Couch is, they had a few guys a few threads back wanting the Saints to sign old Tim "I'm going back home and lay on my" Couch. I wondering if they still would like a crack at him.

NEGATIVES: Needs to improve his hand technique and do a better job of protecting himself. Does not consistently play at a high level.

Cowboys | Dagunduro released
Mon, 27 Aug 2007 13:14:23 -0700

The Dallas Cowboys have announced they have released DL Ola Dagunduro.

Nebraska DT 6-2 300 /

Dagunduro racked up 53 tackles, 13 for a loss and 6 sacks in two years with the Huskers. He has good height, great mass and the frame to get bigger. He has decent speed for his size, but is still raw and needs to refine his technique and master the nuances of his position. Still, he is an attractive prospect with nice intangibles. He could end up being a nice steal late for a team willing to wait for him to develop.

NEGATIVES: Lacks footwork, lateral range and is not effective far off the line of scrimmage. Struggles adjusting to pick up the blitz.

ANALYSIS: A hard-working lineman who takes well to coaching, Jones offers the versatility to be used as a backup for several blocking positions.

Bears | Joe released
Mon, 27 Aug 2007 11:24:20 -0700

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports the Chicago Bears have released LB Leon Joe.

OLB Maryland 6'0½, 230, 4.47

Selected by Chicago Bears
Round 4, pick 16 (112 overall)
BIO: Finished with 112/5.5/1 as a senior after registering 103/9/1 the prior year. Bench presses 470 pounds and had a terrific Combine workout.

POSITIVES: Undersized but competitive linebacker who always gets involved in the play. Quick filling the gaps, redirects to the action well and immediately alters his angle of attack. Pursues with speed from the backside and flies around the ball. Gets depth in pass coverage and makes plays in every direction.

NEGATIVES: Slow adjusting off the initial block, gets caught up in the trash moving laterally and lacks body control. Quick coming up the field and over pursues the action.

ANALYSIS: Physically gifted for the college level, Joe is a bit small for any linebacker position in the NFL. Possesses the athletic numbers to make a move to safety or could play the weak-side in a three-four system.

PROJECTION: Early Seventh Round

Cardinals | Team releases Bain
Mon, 27 Aug 2007 09:29:25 -0700

The Arizona Cardinals announced Monday, Aug. 27, that they have released CB Travarous Bain.

Hampton CB 6-0 175 / 4.43

Bain is a big-play corner with great speed and explosiveness. He is adept at breaking up passes and is a reliable tackler who is dangerous in the open field. Bain's game is still raw and he needs to add bulk, play more aggressively and must support the run better. He has the upside of a first-day pick, but he will probably fall to the later rounds

Browns | O. Harris waived
Mon, 27 Aug 2007 13:36:10 -0700

The Cleveland Browns have announced they have waived DE Orien Harris.

Position: Defensive Tackle
School: Miami (FL)

Status: Senior

Height: 6-4

Weight: 302

40-Yard Dash: 5.27

Selected by: Pittsburgh Steelers
Round 4, pick 36 (133 overall) 2006

Positives:
He is your prototypical defensive tackle that can stop the run and get after the quarterback. Orien has all the potential in the world and for the most part he has lived up to the hype. He is a very unselfish player that does whatever is asked of him. Though his stats don't show it, he is a great pass rusher.
Negatives:
Orien has the size you look for, but doesn't take on blockers very well. He has no trouble at getting in the backfield, but rarely produces any sacks. He needs to polish his defensive moves as well.
Overview:
Orien Harris has all the potential in the world, and I think he will be a great defensive tackle. Has a nose for the ball and is constantly causing havoc in the backfield. He will make an impact on any team right away and is my sleeper pick. Watch out for this kid. He could be one of the best at his position in a couple years.
NFL Comparison: A young Warren Sapp

What about Jerimiah Trotter or Mike Rumph?

saintsrule 08-27-2007 11:55 PM

Re: Nfl Cuts To Look At?

I think they may have the players they want, but who knows they might see someone they like, or make a trade with a team for a player they know will get cut, but who they don't want to make it to the open market.

ScottF 08-28-2007 09:03 AM

Re: Nfl Cuts To Look At?

Other than Trotter, there have been no real intriguing cuts so far. If we had Drew Olson through training camp he might have value, but now now.

Barlow getting cut by Pittsburgh might lower Pittman or Stecker's trade value

sarge06 08-28-2007 09:12 AM

Re: Nfl Cuts To Look At?

I dont see the saints trading either stecker or pittman.

Stecker is the new Fred Mcafee.

and Pittman will be a great back in the future
