Pierre Thomas impressed a ton of people tonight!!! I like this kid and he really seems to be a Coach Payton type of player (more so than Pittman)

Is it just me or does Usama never really get the ball thrown his direction??

Re: Saints/Dolphins thoughts

I couldn`t watch but I listened to the game on the radio.

what I heard;
-Martin is better than Palko
-Pierre is better than Pittman
-Mare isn`t exactly mr. automatic
-Defense played well

.... and I admitt being reluctant to jump on the Pierre bandwagon, but I now officially want to keep this guy. Even his comments off the field impressed me.

Under this scenario it looks like Steckler is out

1st time i can beleive other teams are waiting for saints "cuts " to snap some up. possible get late draft choice for a running back, both thomas and pittman will play in nfl. lots of potential showing in possible defense cuts also

Re: Saints/Dolphins thoughts

If it came down to one final roster spot between P. Thomas, Pittman, and Palko, I would give it to Thomas because he wanted it more and he earned it.

On a related note, is it too late to re-sign Carney?!

Don't worry about Mare. He will make 70% and put that many in the EZ on KO's

I still really don't know why we cut him.

if you look at Stecker, Pierre, and Pittman ,.... Pittman is the weakest link, and he should go first when we cut RB`s

SapperSaint 08-31-2007 07:45 AM

Re: Saints/Dolphins thoughts

Field goals should be more important than kick offs. Points are points. If the guy is missing 35 yarders in the dome, something is wrong.

What was Carney's percentage? Anyone know?

mjf150 08-31-2007 07:47 AM

Re: Saints/Dolphins thoughts

I really did not agree with cutting him, but they did it to save a roster spot. Carney could not handle both field goals and kick-off duties, so the Saints had to use a roster spot on an extra kicker solely for kick-offs. However, I do not think that Mare is better than Carney, as evidenced by their stats from last year. Mare was 26/36 (80.9%) and 10/18 from 40+. Carney was 23/25 (92%) and 6/7 from 40+ yards.

Agreed. Pittman should go before Stecker.

When a contract is signed on a rookie, how much money will the team lose?

Dumb reason in my book.

I hope it doesn't cost us in the long run.

Last year:
Carney
FG's 23 of 25 Xpts 46 of 47
Mare
FG's 26 of 36 Xpts 22 of 22

Re: Saints/Dolphins thoughts

Carney points missed: 7

Mare points missed: 30

Sorry guys but that is a huge difference and not worth an extra spot on the roster.

That what I'm sayin'. I looked at the play by play on espn.com (ESPN.com - NFL - Play-By-Play) and a few names kept popping up. Brian Simmons, Chris Reis, Dhani Jones, Kaesviharn and Fred Thomas all seemed to have big games. Of those 5, Reis and Thomas are playing for a job, with or without the Saints. I think we cut Reis b/c we are pretty deep at safety and I don't see where you can keep more than 4 on the team, but I bet someone picks him up off waivers. Keep Fred around as a nickle/dime guy.

The last time I can remember a shutout was sometime around '90 or '91. We played the Raiders at the dome on a Monday Night and beat them 23-0.

I hope the Mare thing is not a trend. A lot of people here in Miami were a bit frustrated with him.

Actually it was three... two clanked off the goal posts, the other was wide right... (missed from 33, 55, and 50)

I guess he's not use to the artificial surface yet...

Re: Saints/Dolphins thoughts

I must say, Jamie Martin and Tyler Palko made me keep my mouth shut last night as far as what I've been saying about them (anti-Martin, pro-Palko). Chris Reis was a nice surprise, wish we could have seen a little more from him this preseason, but probably will get cut because numbers are against him. Pierre Thomas did great, but that was no big surprise. 2nd string O-line looked better than normal (though the Dolphins might have had something to do with that). And yes, the Mare deal was terrible. I know 2 of those missed FG's were 50+ yards. But dude, you are a kicker in the National Football League. You get paid a ton of money to do nothing but kick the ball. You should not be missing 3 FG's in a row. ESPECIALLY not one from 33 yards. He's very consistent with kickoffs, but it looks like we might have to use up that extra roster spot anyway if we wanna make some field goals.

I can see it now, Saints down by 2 points against the defending champion Indianapolis Colts, Mare's set up at the 20 yard line with 3 seconds left on the clock...and it hits the goal post.

Re: Saints/Dolphins thoughts

I agree missing 3 kicks are concerning but consider last year we probably would have only attempted 1 of them. Turf could be a factor but he better make the adjustments.

Re: Saints/Dolphins thoughts

*sigh* Sean Payton and his obsessive offensive mind.

Touchbacks trumps field goals made? In his mind, it is apparently worth the risk.

I really hope Mare does well in pressure situtations. Cause we're stuck with him.

So Mare has one bad preseason game out of five, and everyone is ready to get rid of him already?

....Okay.....

Good point. However, with the offense we have, we'd better not be playing for field goals, touchdowns are what they play for. Like Budsdrinker said, two of those would never have been attempted last year with Carney. I liked Carney but he had lost his leg strength. Billy Whatshisname couldn't hit his butt with both hands. Mare will be ok. At least I hope so. Give him some time to get used to the field and the turf. He's better than we might have gotten.

I found an interesting article in regards to Mare.

Dante Hall, Devin Hester, Eddie Drummond, National Football League - CBSSports.com

Quote:

For the 2006 season, NFL teams averaged 2.4 punts per game and 3.9 kickoff returns per game. Double that up since it is special teams on both sides and you get 4.8 and 7.8. That makes 12.6 plays per game for punts and kickoffs, not counting touchbacks. As for kicking to score, teams averaged 1.8 field-goal attempts per game last season and 2.2 extra-point attempts a game. Double those and you get 3.6 and 4.4 for eight kicks per game.
I would guess that is Paytons reasoning for the Mare pick up. That and he only takes up one position rather than two.
That said, if Mare loses a game or more because of his less than perfect feild goal percentage, this article can go to the blazes.

I thought this from the article was good too. I missed it the first time.

1991, Dec. 16 - 27-0 win over the L.A. Raiders?
1992, Dec. 26 - 20-0 win over the N.Y. Jets

And yet this bugs me because I remember a shutout game against the Rams, and a low scoring (but not sure of shutout) at Seahawks. Rams could be in 80s, Seahawks definitely in 90s but I was listening on Radio when I was in Uk and the game finished about 5am in the morning there!

You guys are panicing to soon. Mare will be fine. Give him a chance. How many of us can kick a 50 yard field goal? The thirty yarder is harder to explain but hell you can't blame him for everything. It could be a multitude of things that cause the misses. Let's wait and see.

Dude, you need to relax.

Both Mare and Carney have well known skillsets in this league.

Mare: best kickoff. most touchbacks. can hit the 50+ yarder. 80% accuracy playing outdoors.

Carney: Accurate inside the 40. Limited leg. could not put the ball in the EZ on kickoffs.

Consider that last year the Saints needed two active roster spots to do what Mare does now. And Not even Cundiff could put the ball back for a touchback like Mare does.

And yes I must finish with the painful parting shot. I'm reasonably sure that Mare did not in fact lose an actual game due to a missed extra point. Just in case you've forgotten:

YouTube - Crazy and Hilarious Finish to NFL Game: River City Relay

So chill. Mare will be fine.

Re: Saints/Dolphins thoughts

The funny thing is, Mare only had his worst year last year mainly due to going 1 for 6 in field goals of 50+ yards. He was considered one of the best kickers in the league until last season, so I don't know why everyone is so doom and gloom about him now. Guys can have an off year, especially when the team is tanking and your coach's pupils are looking like dollar signs.

No way he's on the first team, dude... don't expect to see FT in any defensive situations where we need a stop or are faced against deep threats. He's got experience and he fills a much smaller roll than past seasons. Jason David, McKenzie and Harper are the web.

if you asked for odds at end of last season it would have 0% the FT would be back. i'm sure he has some wisdom to pass on such as how to get ran past on a consistant basis. i hope we don't see him thursday
