DT Thomas to Start, Clancy has Turf Toe

Because of a turf toe injury to defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy, the Saints may have to count out on their best run stopper from a year ago when they go against the Tennessee Titans on Monday night.
Hollis Thomas lost his starting job to Clancy in training camp after Thomas reported to camp overweight and out of shape. Thomas was estimated to be at least 25 pounds over his reporting weight of 330 pounds and gave way to Clancy, who was signed in June, when the weight failed to come off.
Thomas has been part of the line rotation for the first two games, but his role could expand with Clancy ailing and the NFL's top running attack coming to the Superdome as the Titans are averaging a healthy 211.5 yards a game.

This could be a long day. As if we needed a DT to come up lame.

Remember last year when Atlanta brought their new "best in the league" option running attack to the dome? Remember that? And Vince Young is nowhere near as fast as Vick.

I say it's going to be a long night for Titans fans.

I believe it is tearing everyone's guts out, I want to see some heart on the field.

0-3, I do not believe a team has eve made it to the SB starting out 0-3. Playoffs will be a reach at 0-3, but I will still cheer and hope we can ruin someone else's dream if we get to that point. Maybe the first two games have taught them a lesson, if not then it could get ugly.

I believe that Thomas is the better run stuffer. Clancy is a good 2nd stringer.

Young is smart? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

This guy has gotta be one of the dumbest people in the NFL, or maybe even the country. The reason why Vince Young is so good is not because he is smart; it's because he's a sick nasty athlete. He's got a cannon for an arm and good wheels. He can beat with his arm or his legs. Having a lot of brainpower, however, is never something that good ol' VY has ever had to deal with.

I believe , it's a hyper-extention of a tendon or ligament in the foot .
Usually requires some time to heal .

Dude, I've always preferred Thomas over Clancy. So, he's a bit heavier now... does that REALLY mean he's not going to be as effective? Really? Do we REALLY know that?

C'mon, man. That just means the OLs and RBs are going to have to have 25lbs MORE strength to move this guy out of the way. As I can remember, Thomas was VERY agile for his size. He may have slown down a bit because of the extra weight, but it still remains to be seen if its REALLY going to hurt his performance.

Maybe I'm just too optimistic.

They both suck. The FO going into the draft needs to draft the best player on the board that doesn't play offense or DE.

Young is not Wonderlic smart, but he is football smart. Watch how he sets guys up from ten yards away and then makes them look stupid.

... Young is not as "shifty" as Vick, but he's fast.

And look, football is a very physical game, Before it requires "being smart", it requires being a physical freak. When it comes to football and playing in the NFL, no amount of mental prowess will ever compensate for athletic prowess. And football is not rocket science. Sure, some players are "smarter" than others when it comes to playing the game, but it is more instinct than anything else.

Why do you think Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are so much better than any other QB in the league? Not because they are "physical freaks" but because they have more football intelligence than anybody else.

... but Brady and Manning are physical freaks. They have to be physical freaks to be in the NFL to begin with. I don't know many 6'4"-6'5" guys who can fling a football 70 yards and get up from a 300+ lb man planting them in the ground, do you?

You could be smart as a whip, you could memorize 1000 formations, hours of film, etc... but when the ball is snapped, and you got 1-2 seconds to react, how you react has litle to do with intelligence, it has to do with instinct. When the proverbial bullets start flying, there's a big gap between being prepared and being able to do and/or react.

I hope all the the DT are able to play.

Re: DT Thomas to Start, Clancy has Turf Toe

Thomas does what he is suppose to do. Tie up two OL and if one is assigned to him he get penetration. Thats his job. Clancy is more of a gap splitter, just like Young. He is just a bit larger. Face the facts we do not have a DT that is a full time starter. We have a good platoon and thats it. Now if we can get one starting DT some how then we should be ok there. Rent a defense sux's. One day SOON we need to invest in a DT and stop using wrecks at DT.

Turf toe is an injury to the base of the big toe, in which you actually tear the capsule that surrounds the joint at the base of the toe. A turf toe injury usually occurs when the toe is jammed into the ground and bent too far back (hyperextended). This injury occurs most often in sports that require quick direction changes, such as football, soccer or rugby.

Turf toe is named after the artificial surface (turf) found on many playing fields. Increased grip provided by the artificial surface combined with the special shoes worn to play on such surfaces can increase the risk of this injury. However, turf toe can occur in any sport and on any surface.
Turf toe is a painful injury. The pain may be so severe that it causes limping and prevents running. A doctor may make a diagnosis by:

 Physical examination
 Medical history
 X-rays

Treatment usually includes:

 Applying ice to the toe
 Wearing a rigid-soled shoe or inserting a rigid plate into your shoe to prevent excessive toe movement

In more severe cases, treatment may include:

 Avoiding sports for up to six weeks
 Wearing a walking boot or cast to immobilize the toe
 Surgery, rarely
