the dumbest play call

The dumbest play call (I assume it was called and not an audible at the line) during the Carolina give-away loss was after McKensie got the INT and the offense was driving the ball into Carolina territory, then got into a 3rd n 8 situation in borderline field goal range and Brees tries a deep pass to Patten who was in man2man coverage. The pass wasn`t even close, Patten was covered like a wet blanket. A slant, a screen, a draw, anything that would have either picked up a 1st down or gotten 5+ more crucial yards could have been a back breaker for Carolina, but no, Brees tries a hail-mary to limp leg Patten that fails and sets up a 53 yard field goal attempt by the NFL`s worst field goal kicker. I thought it was the bonehead play call of the day.

what do you think was the bonehead play call of the day?

(and No, Payton would not be a genius if it had worked. If it had worked it would have been a dumb call that worked)

One play doesn't lose you a game.

Too bad Patten was able to knock away the interception. If Carolina intercepts the ball there we don't try a 55 yard field goal and give them the on the 45. Maybe the game goes to overtime.

Bonehead call of the day: When Payton started Brees over Palko. :)

No one play doesn't lose the game for you there are several you can look at that 'what if'. What lost the game for the Saints was 60 minutes of play not 4-8 seconds.

Yeah, but that play sure as hell didn't help win the game.

I agree, Sean Payton's play callin is horrible.

?!?!?!? What is that supposed to mean? I'm lost. What does draftin Bush have to do with bad calls? Drafting Bush was not a bad call. You know.....it takes teams a few years to build the franchise under a new coach. We had a great year and we all expected huge things this year. Obviously not the case. However, this is Payton's second year....I'd say he deserves a little more time before we start crucifying the guy. Drafting Bush was a piece of our foundation. We got Meachem to cover for Horn. Not really panned out well but he'll show eventually. Give it time guys. Nobody got rid oj Jimmy johnson after his first 2 seasons and looked what eventually happened for Dallas during the 90's.

Another cowboy refrence... I think I am going to puke.

You don't build a team's foundation around a Reggie Bush... you get a Reggie bush to compliment your foundation.

Teams expect us to do the unexpected. So the expected would be unexpected. we are to cute for own good.

I must say I was impressed with the fact that we went for it of 4th down
That tells me that they are at least willing to put it all out there and do what it takes to get the job done

And yes there were some plays I thought they could have called better but blame can’t fall solely on the play calling because the players we not executing well

Ditto. Bring on Palko!

Re: the dumbest play call

They cut Palko to add Mitchell to the roster because of Fujitas injury. He'll be picked back up if he clears waivers.

My post was not "the one play that lost the game". I was pointing out what I thought was the bonehead call of the day, and after further review, it was a bonehead call.

F'ING EXACTLY!!! Teams have played Cover 2 on us multiple times this year and we were too dry. Everyone and their grandma knows that TE's, running the ball, and the middle of the field is the key to beating the Cover 2. Instead, Payton wants to be soooo much of an Offensive genius, he calls plays for outside routes (which end up as INT's) and never runs the ball with Deuce inside. Then at the end of the game Eric Johnson is moving us downfeild, WTF U THINK HE WOULDVE DONE THE WHOLE GAME?! like whoooa

@ D24Pick: Propers on sticking with the Vlad signature.

Re: the dumbest play call

it wasn't the play call that was as horrible as the decision to throw it deep, there was a couple of underneath routes, from where i was sitting the one over the middle was more open than Patten was.

Very true...

It's not how you start the game it's how to finis it, the Saints didn't finish well against the Panthers, you can blame the Patton drop, you can blame the missed FG's, you can blame the Int's, you can blame the play calling, you can blame the OL, the bottom line is that the team as a whole just didn't take care of business, they can only blame themselves for a lack of effort, they played without a heart, without passion and no will to win the game, the Panthers are a very bad football team and they couldn't beat them at home in a sold out Dome..
A ton of work has to be done for the Saints to have any chance in winning their first game which may be a few weeks ago...

Re: the dumbest play call

The blocked field goal changed the momentum in the game. I was pretty upset after that play. The ball should not be kicked at that low of a trajectory, especially on a 23-yarder where you are almost guaranteed not to miss. I also noticed that Mare's other FG and XP were low and wobbly. Mare needs to get this fixed ASAP or we have to get another kicker.

Re: the dumbest play call

Why do they keep cutting Palko. Let Palko play. He could be just like Delhomme. Drew has no arm. We colud have still had Delhomme if it wasnt for that idiot Haslett. Payton souldnt have had Reggie have 30 touches. Let him and Pierre Thomas be the new 1-2 punch. This idiot Payton put P.Thomas on special teams. Pierre reminds me of Deuce with power and more speed.

Re: the dumbest play call

Execution, execution, execution. Players not being able to execute is the problem. This next draft should consiost of TOP Oline and Dline personnel. The battle sarts and ends with the front lines. 5 blitzs' during a game will not give you an advantage on stopping "The Big Play" give aways.

The best players will not win a game, if the execution of the play is not carried out by ALL PLAYERS.

To make a point that Euph hit on. We can not, CAN NOT build a dominate team AROUND one player (Bush). We tried that already...remember a guy named Ricky Williams. Look how great that worked out.
