Postgame Thoughts

U. Young was in on some plays...that's good to see. Props to Pierre Thomas, too. Get'em how you can, son!

Gibbs called a good game, too. Way to put Harper in position to make some plays.

MM played out of his mind. He's my drunken MVP of the game.

Hasslebeck blew it for sure. That pick to Bullocks was one of the worst plays I've seen in a while.

A little (lot) disconcerting that no points were scored in the 2nd half.

I'll see you thugs in the morning...Who dat talkin'?!?

Re: Postgame Thoughts

They dominated.

I've always said, that if the Offense could score more than 20-points, the Saints were going to win. The Defense will only give up around 20-points a game... as long as the Offense plays DECENTLY. Of course, if the Defense is on the field all game long because the Offense can't get a first down, then they'll give up more.

I was discouraged that we couldn't 'put the nail in the coffin'. If we wouldn't have abandoned the pass while trying to run out the clock, we probably would have atleast got a field goal. But, props to them for atleast building a lead large enough that they could still pull off a decisive win even after they couldn't run out the clock effectively on multiple chances.

now on to next week.
In my tenure as a saints fan I have always said it does not matter what the two teams records are
never take the falcons lightly
away
at home
underdog
or top dog.
it is Atlanta! 500 miles away. one year our senior. It is always a game.
Lets take this win and continue the momentum.
geaux!

Slow it down a lil. I'm still marinating here, give me a minute.:D That was a damn good defense we just beat, much props goes to the Saints offense, especially Reggie Bush, David Patten, Drew Brees, and the Defense, but my MVP goes to the entire Offensive Line. They opened up running lanes, Drew Brees wasn't touch all night, and they gave him all kinds of time to survey the field and make the proper reads, that's how it supposed to look when your O-line does it's thing.

Re: Postgame Thoughts

Nice to get a win. Nice to see Brees throwing a few good passes (and people catching).

Overall, we did o.k. on defense - BUT, when they began shredding us in the second half, I think it was because we were lining up like 12 yard cushions on the receivers (dumb).

When you blitz, you get results. I'd like to see more jammage at the line of scrimmage.

oh and Simoneau, ride the pine.

Good win, feels great, hopefully we can build on the confidence and get a little streak simmering in a roux

All of them played well. Although it seems the offensive linemen each had a penalty. But they played well besides those.

Re: Postgame Thoughts

Maybe the first 4 preseason games were not enough. Maybe, just maybe, the Saints needed a 4 game preseason re-start. So now that the 2nd preseason is done and they have a bobbled punt returned for a TD (blocked punt against Atlanta last year) which may be the kindling that gets the Saints on fire...who knows.

Re: Postgame Thoughts

Did anybody notice HOW Bush got sprung? Karney! Finally Payton gave Karney some playing time and everything blew up. The offensive line is the the same ole line that everyone here has been crying about for the 1st 5 weeks. The difference last night was Karney helping to plow a path for Bush and protecting Brees. Everbody seemed to contribute to a much needed win. Guys were actually hitting - it sounded good. People were diving for loose balls and playing with some passion - it felt good. Brees was comfortable in the pocket (1st half) and it looked good. Best of all, we held on to win, that is always good. I still have my concerns though: at the top of the list is the sluggish 2nd half. We were a couple of bad bounces away from a different 1st half. Seahawks hand us a touchdown on the first punt attempt, and then they give us back Patton's fumble 15 yards further down the field and we score. The game COULD have been much different and COULD have called for much better play in the 2nd half. It seems that we did only what we had to to win, and that leaves me reserved and cautious going forward.

I am happy for the win....but a damn good defense? Um, they are only ranked one peg above us at 22nd. Let's not jump for joy here. It is a good win to build on and hopefully our O line can continue to block somewhat, but calling them a good defense is a stretch.

So much for us getting shut out this weekend eh fellas? It was obvious our offensive line and defensive line blows donkey poop.

Glad to see us get a win... and hopefully we'll get another one against Atlanta. The Panthers have a touch schedule coming up and I can seeing them losing 3 of their next 4 hopefully. Got to worry about the Bucs though... their upcoming schedule looks easy. One game at a time... still got plenty of games to go.

Re: Postgame Thoughts

Thoughts? Happy ones, finally. It was so nice to watch my team come out on the field and control the game from beginning to end. I don't mind the defense giving up some passing yardage when they did, that's what happens when you are playing a clock control game from a big lead.

I agree that Hollis Thomas was a monster yesterday. I saw him run down someone from behind. The big man was incredible. Also agree that McKenzie was all over the place. Wish he would have caught that interception on the Seahawks' last play on offense. He deserved a big finish after the night he put in. Roman Harper made me smile a lot yesterday, and Charles Grant got his first sack on a stunt.

More than ALL of that combined though, I was so very pleased to see Drew Brees throwing the ball well in all phases of the game; short, mid-range, and deep. That eases my mind more than it all. Not even Reggie dancing through the defense could make me happier.

Great night of football, and I truly enjoyed it.

Totally! I for one was happy with fatboys, playing.

Loved seeing the new guys getting some time. YEAH for P.T. on the T.D., Usama played great, any word on his injury?

Finally!!!!!, for Reggie to show us he's a RB!

O and D lines played very well. I give the O line a "B"; D line gets an "A".

I won't say this was the best pefromance this team has ever had, but... it is the best performance THIS team has had. Good job boys! Great TOTAL TEAM effort.

More kudos for Gibbs: I liked that set where grant moved to the right tackle spot next to smith. That threw off the 'hawk's o-line and produced a sack.

Kudos for Payton: that 1st and 10 from the 2 decision to go with the play-action took cahones.

Re: Postgame Thoughts

Payton held up in the second half and he should've done that. Payton also had a few bonehead play calls on third down to end drives. I'll take the win and now we have the Falcons and the 49ers the next two weeks. This means we will be 3-4 going into the showdown with the Jags at home. Damn it's not that far from 4-4. Can you smell what the rock is cookin?

Re: Postgame Thoughts

I love that we applied some pressure on the quarterback with some different blitz packages. See what happened? Hasselback made some poor throws when he had guys in his face, and we also recorded 4 or 5 sacks. Very nicely done.

Reggie can be an every down back, Sean Payton just needs to stop calling cutesie plays and run the damn ball up the middle. If you run a stretch, screen pass, or swing pass every other play, it's not going to trick anybody. We need to stick to "bread and butter," which should be some inside and outside running plays and an intermediate passing game. I mean seriously, is it too much to ask for a freaking slant? We threw one last night and it worked beautifully. Slants, curls, etc. They work even if they're not as flashy as jailbreak screens and whatnot that Sean loves.

David Patten played great. Brees was much better too. Props to both of them for stepping up when we needed them.

EJ is a stud. Great hustle. One of the few hustle plays I've seen all year out of this offense.

I'm still stuuned looking at Holiis Thomas. I cant believe a big man that size could run that fast. The defense did a heck of a job. Coach Payton must have read these forums about letting Karney get more playing. Congrats to the o-line for protecting Brees all night. We statring to resemble our team last year. Run Reggie Run.

Re: Postgame Thoughts

I'm happy we didn't stick with Devery. He just has no confidence. Moore and Patten looked good. I think the receivers are set finally. The O line played well against Carolina and Seattle for the most part so they look to be gelling.

Bush ran decisively up the middle and even threw his shoulder to finish runs. The D got lucky on a couple, especially when Simoneau was out in deep coverage. I would like to see Simmons at MLB still with how he played against Carolina. Usama looks good. Craft looks into the backfield instead of following his man.

I'd like to see Branch in on some runs. They played well and milked the clock in the second half. Holmgren should have kicked a FG and gone for an onsides kick at the end, but that's his problem. GO SAINTS!

The Saints should be blitzing most of the time exactly the way they did last night. Have folks coming from all directions.

I agree to a point. The Saints have neither the line nor the back to just line it up and run. The offense needs to incorporate misdirection into the running scheme. I like the end around wideout coming back into the backfield, forcing the contain man to account for them. I'd like to see more of the counter trey with a designed cutback.

Agreed.

Brees is a better QB when he isn't pressured every play. Hmmm, I think that's true of all NFL QBs.

And the guy can catch too.
