Ricky Williams Reinstated

ESPN reports that Commissioner Goodell has reinstated Miami Dolphins' running back Ricky Williams for the rest of the 2007 season.

Could we trade Olindo Mare back to them for him? At this point, I would in the time it takes to peel a crawfish. We need a bruising RB and he's superfluous there. Thomas and Stecker aren't the answer and Bush is too delicate. We're clearly not going to promote Branch from the practice squad and he's the only bruising RB on the roster, so why not?

If Williams is in football shape and is ready to play I think it could work out for both him and the Saints.
It's worth the gamble IMO I just wouldn't give up top draft picks for him or break the bank for him.
The deal would have to be very sweet for the Saints for me to let him back in if I was calling the shots in N.O .
We need a bruiser back because of the lost with Deuce, Bush can't continue to get that many plays and stay healthy, we can see the toll his body is taking right now, we need a RB that can bust up the middle and as much as I like Stecker he can't do that.
Where is my Ricky Williams at?, oh I remember I burned it sometime back.
This will be an interesting thread for the next few days.

He's just Payton's kind of guy. A pot smoking, anti-social personality. I wouldn't mind having him back, but i'm not real sure about Payton. And we could use a bruiser back there.

I agree, he's not a player Sean would want on his team, but then again, in the NFL you just never know.

From a fan perspective (Longhorns and Saints), I'd love to see him back w/ the Saints. We could have two Heisman winners in the same backfield :-).

From a coaching perspective, it makes little sense. He doesn't know this offense, and to bring him in during midseason would be risky. We could use him as a goalline specialist, but Reggie has been running tougher, so why? Stecker has played much better this year than last year too.

How hard is it to learn how to take a hand-off and which hole the play is designed to run? Many Many Many running backs in the league have surfaced long after the season's started to perform extremely well for their teams, even with new offensive coordinators/systems. Running back is one of the easiest positions in the offense to learn, and the only real issue he'll have is what are his blocking assignments. Not hard since he's had several systems to learn in - he's not a rookie.

As for his pot smoking - antisocial behavior, he's never been a lockerroom cancer and clearly he wouldn't be reinstated if he hasn't shown Roger "the Facist" Goodell and the doctors he's rehabilitated.

Unfortunately, the trading deadline has passed and the only way the Saints could get Williams is in the event that the Dolfins cut him, which isn't likely since he's sorta an indentured servant due to his previous bad behavior.

I don't care what type of running back you get, if the offensive lineman aren't that good, they would get Jim Brown busted up. No running back in the league would have a season running behind the Saints offensive lineman. If Reggie Bush, wouldn't have gotten drafted by the Saints, he'll probably, have over a thousand yards. Three straight games, Reggie had over 100 yards, receiving and running, last week only 7 carries, is this Reggie or the coach?

Why would they want Mare back????

Isn't Mueller still the GM over there in Miami? If memory serves, Mueller got fired for trading Ricky - even though we ended up with two first round picks for that trade. But the 'Fins are 0-9, aren't they? Who knows what they'll do.

If Randy's still over there, though, it'd be very strange to see Ricky playing for him again.

Mueller got the ax for wanting to spend too much of Benson's money to build a winner. Benson couldn't have that, not Bottom-line-Benson. He was selling out the Dome with a mediocre product...why spend any more of my money to upgrade it? Benson told him to get your hat...I've got your coat!

He wouldn't need to know the offense. He would only have to learn 2-3 plays. He would only carry the ball once or twice per game.

my reaction exactly, who needs a running back when you treat them like your appendix.

Does it seem like I'm waffling? Not really, if they'd run the ball more with someone who'd be durable enought to make and take a hit...

I am pulling for Ricky. I will pull for anyone who is making an asserted effort to put his life back on track. If that includes carrying the rock again, then go for it. Looked like he had lost quite a few pounds in some Canadian highlight clips I saw a few months ago. Ricky was a pretty good back until his meds got mixed with his cataract prescription. I would love to see someone give him a chance, and he makes good on it. Besides that he's cheap - a gamble but cheap. Run Ricky Run!

I would rather see Cecil "the Diesel" Collins toting the rock, provided he's not still in prison. It's much harder to catch a burglar than a pothead!

Cecil was ferocious, a man among boys. He use to make ME want to strap it up. That boy was BAD. I have trouble even imagining how good he could have been. When is he up for parole? I'll write a letter.

I don't know what it is about Ricky, but I am always taking his side on these stories. Even when he was a Dolphin, I would find myself making excuses for him. I like the guy. He is soft spoken, and leaves everything on the field. So what if he smokes a little of God's green earth, at least he won't feel the pain of bruising linebackers. I officially name this the "SIGN RICKY THREAD!" Let's get rid of Stecker, and try Reggie and Ricky in the same backfield. PLEASE SEAN PLEASE!!!!!
