Rams Loss: Offensive or Defensive Fault
 

I keep hearing (on the radio) that the problem with the Rams game was the offensive and lack of running the football, etc. I getting a little sick of it. The problem (fault) was the defense. They could not stop the Rams on 3rd down, very long drives, keeping the offense off of the field. If they did blitz, they did it on 2nd down and put the Rams in third and long. But, then backed up, gave up too much cushion, no pass rush and viola, 1st down again. Remember, the defense gave up 34 points by the end of the 3rd quarter, with no give-me drives or kick returns.

I would not call them mutually exclusive. The Saints came out on the opening drive and had me thinking rout. I guess they thought the same thing and decided they didn't have to try. The D was terrible, too. There was a pass rush at times, but when Bulger got the protection the DBs couldn't contain Holt and Co. There were no halftime or in-game adjustments as I could see. The O-Line was not protecting worth a crap, either. It was truly a complete game.

The saddest part was that the Saints almost came back. If they could have held a little better on D they might have scraped one out. It really shouldn't have ever been close. If your secondary is going to get abused anyway, screw it and bring the house on every play.

I think that recent history has shown with this team that when the defense is on the field more than the offense we lose. I'd blame the offense because they did squat. At least the defense made them march down the field. We shot ourselves in the foot offfensivly by playcalling, poor playing, and losing the football. I don't think the Rams defense did anything special. Our offense gave the game away.

The Saints just don't play good football in the New Orleans Super-dome, and it's very strange, we are the only team that don't play good at home. This has been going on for years. I believe we have a chance to win the division on the road.

I give the coaches the blame on this one. I agree with WhoDat205, if the defense is prone to getting burned anyway, why not blitz the hell out of them.

Actually I thought the Saints blitzed more than they have in the past... the problem Bulger read it and fired off to the hot routes. The counter that the Saints had to let up on the blitzes. I think we lost the game on adjustments.

The radio comments that you heard are to a degree correct. The run blocking was there but we didn't use it. Our pass protection wasn't there and we used it... UGH. Payton I think eluded to it in some of his comments. They didn't see what the Rams were doing until they saw it on game films. But you freakin have to see that during the damn game and adjust to it, alter the game plan.

So in fact we lost the game due to the coaching for not seeing and reacting.

I've heard all the discussion on why we lost to the Rams. I guess I should put in my two cents worth. So here goes.

I saw only two problems with the Saints in that game.

1. The offense was inconsistant, couldn't sustain a drive.
2. The defense was on the field to long. By the second quarter they were tired, and they're not that young to do that. Besides like some on here say, they're not good enough to be out there that long either.

I don't know what game you were watching if you think that the Saints "almost came back." 22 points against in the last 11 minutes of the game when down by a terminal margin is not much of an accomplishment considering the Rams were content to let the Saints have at it. Scoring a td with 1:23 to go and needing an OSK recovery then marching 65+ yards with no timeouts was exciting if you were a fantasy league participant only.
