There is no sense in picking up Carney again. At 4-6, just let Mare show what he can or can't do for the rest of the year. This season is pretty much over, baring a miracle. Maybe Mare can shake out of his funk and show us something good to look forward to next year. Yes, I am in a very bad mood tonight...

I'm going to disagree with MatthewT here and say that we need to pick him up. I don't care if he can only kick it to the 15 yard line on kickoffs, we need to be able to get in field goal range and have faith in our kicker. We've had too many momentum killing 4th down calls because we don't trust Mare

If the Saints are looking for re-threads, then here is another one;

Re: John Carney is available

We pick him up because it sends a message to all of the other loafers and slugs: Bring your game EVERYWEEK, or your job is up for grabs. Week 1 or week 16, the policy is the same. I'm not ready to toss the season yet. 4 down and then 4 up. 2 down and....the script hasn't been played out yet. Let's not have it dictated to us - I'd like to see the guys give some kind of effort towards the "6 up" ending to this thing. It may not happen but it sets the tone going forward into 08' and beyond. These guys know what business they are in, and they know that team loyalty went out the door when free agency walked in. They are paid professionals; I'd like to see them act like it - every week!

Re: John Carney is available

Mare was brought in mainly because of his ability, over Carney, to limit returns by making touchbacks. I think it would be interesting to see, if someone could do the research, how many touchback Mare has had this year, verses how many Carney had at this time last year. I think the results would be surprising, because, to be honest, I haven't seen Mare make too many touchbacks this year, or field goals for that matter.

Um, hands down, I sign Carney. Don't let last weeks 52 yarder fool you.

He can't kick an extra point

Last year stats from nfl.com
Mare 24 TB's
Carney 5 TB's

This year
Mare 11 TB's
Carney 5 TB's

Carney was 23 of 25 for the Saint's last year, that's 92% for those counting. Mare, on the other hand has made only 6 out of 12, or 50%, for the team this year. I would gladly keep a player with 92% coversion rate on FG's and less TB's, over a guy that makes only half of his FG's.

Here are career stats for both kickers.

Olindo Mare: Career Stats

John Carney: Career Stats

Career stats are pretty close to equal and they both have missed some critical kicks and made some kicks. Carney just doesn't have the leg strength anymore. Bottom line is we need to get in the endzone and not worry about fieldgoals.

How true is this! If we get touchdowns, we don't need a fieldgoal kicker. Get 6 and forget it. There's no point in signing another kicker, we've got what we've got. Touchdowns are the answer.

I don't give two sh**s about touchbacks. What a worthless stat. I'd rather see us go 23/25 on field goals, instead of 7/13. Those are actual points, not just mere starting field position. Mare is terrible. Drew can tell me not to boo, but I'm a real fan who cares about how this team does, and when I see a turd who only has one job (i.e. kick the damn ball) and he can't do it better than 54% of the time, then I'll boo as much as I please. We need to let this clown go (along with Jason David and Mark Simoneau).

Re: John Carney is available

I say sign him for field goals and let Mare kick off and by the way I think we should on side kick every kick off the rest of the season and use the shotgun, no huddle also.

If we're going to lose lets at least make it exciting and score some points, I can watch the 49ers if I want to see a team that can't score and has no potential at all.
