Player turnover..........

Last year during mini-camp Loomis alluded to the fact that there is ALWAYS 12 to 15 players on a team that turnover during any given year.

My question is this...Which 12 to 15 players will NOT be with the Saints in 08 (either through trades or waived)?

My possiblities are;
Henderson
Moore
Copper
Stinchcomb
Nesbit
Faine
Martin
Hollis Thomas
Simoneau
Jason David
Fred Thomas
Mare

Of those, I'd like to keep Hollis Thomas. I think Simoneau plays well when his teammates do - so, I'm kind of on the fence with him.

Other than that, I wouldn't be upset if we lost any of the rest. I kinda dig Moore and Nesbit a bit, but if we have to lose some players...

I'm hoping we don't lose any of our running backs. I think it's going to be hard for Sean Payton to get rid of any back we have, especially when this year the supply of running backs was pretty much exhausted with injuries.

Re: Player turnover..........

Henderson, Thomas, Nesbit, and Mare most likely won't be coming back. If we don't target a certain center via free agency, then I would think we'd re-sign Faine. Let him battle with Goodwin for the center job and hope he returns to 2006 form. We should target a solid pass catching WR during the offseason to start opposite Colston.

Re: Player turnover..........

I like Henderson, Moore and Copper...if we could just teach Henderson to actually HOLD ONTO a ball when he catches it. Copper's good, too, when he's on his game (I know...I know...)

I like Hollis Thomas, too.

I say we dump:

Jason David
Fred Thomas
Mark Simoneau
Scott Shanle
Jamie Martin (shouldn't we look for someone younger??)
Jason Craft

Above and beyond that, I can't think of anyone else. Mare is okay but for now I think I'll stick with the itsby-bitsy-teeny-tiny Gramatica. So maybe add Mare to the list.

Re: Player turnover..........

Judging by the way Payton has stuck behind J David this season and being so early into his contract..... Is it possible JD won't be back?

And Henderson.... will we get anything for him?

I like Hollis, Moore, and Mare. The rest of the losers are garbage. Henderson drives me crazy when he drops passes. I wish we could have kept Donte Stallworth.

Even though it didn't look like it early, one of the bright spots again this season was the play of our offensive line. I think I heard during the game on Sunday that the Saints OLine had surrendered the fewest sacks in the NFL (correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's true). I believe that it is important to keep as much of the line in tact as possible. Obviously, if there are upgrades somewhere, then we should pursue it; I'm just saying that the line has played well and lines always do better the more time they've spent together.

Henderson needs to be gone. Lance Moore can stay at a low salary, but he's completely expendable in my book. I would like to see us keep Copper who was great last season and underused in my opinion this season.

Jaime Martin should be gone. So should Mare. Whoever says Mare is "good" is smoking something amazing, and I'd like to get a little bit of it. The guy is absolutely terrible. He blew the Panthers game for us by missing a field goal from the 3.

Hollis Thomas can be good, but we really really need to find another DT who isn't a street FA just signed off the waiver wire because nobody else wanted him. We need to add a little toughness to this defense, something we just don't have right now.

I wish I could hop in a time machine and travel back in time and beg the Saints not to sign David, but we're stuck with him now, and I honestly don't see what we're going to do with him. He's the worst cornerback I've ever seen in the NFL, I believe he's given up 10 touchdowns this season. He shouldn't be on an NFL team, or even an AFL or CFL team.

I love me some Fred Thomas, but he's old and expendable. He hardly played this season, but I don't think he would have contributed anything if he did get the PT.

O, I almost forgot about Simoneau, who blows. We need a shot of athleticism and toughness to our linebacking corps which we don't have with Simoneau and his 4.9 40 and sweet cowboy collar.

How long have we been waiting for Henderson to hold on to the ball? It's time to cut our loses (and the number of dropped passes).

Papz, where did that quote about crows come from? Forrest Gump? Raising Arizona?

Henderson needs a major salary cut and even then I would question the front office.

I know...I think I hold out hope for him because he does catch the occasional pass and make the occasional play. I don't think he's the worst guy on the team. Okay, maybe offensively he is. I don't know...I'd still be tempted to keep him. I do confess to cringing everytime I see him reaching for a pass...

I'm also tempted to cover his hands in Gorilla Glue or wrap him in double sided tape from head to toe.

I am not sure even with your solution Henderson could hold onto the football. Fast as a speeding bullet with dead cold hands. A change of scenery and cut in salary would help a lot!

I bet if each ball had an incentive attached to it (like no salary and $10,000 for each ball caught), his ability to catch a football might improve!

Just a couple quick observations;

The Saints have surrendered the fewest sacks in the NFL, however, I feel this has more to do with Drew having tremendous pocket awareness and having the ability of getting rid of the ball fast. As far as pocket awareness goes, I think he's right there with Peyton, but Drew has more mobility than Peyton, which allows him to escape in situations where Peyton would just take the sack.

You forgot to mention all the 3rd and longs that David gave up (hence why I call him 3rd Down).

About Mare... the thing with Mare is that we know he was playing hurt. He was money on the onside kicks, and got a lot of touchbacks... kicking field goals is very different from kicking kickoffs... now we have El Enano Pateador, who has made all field goals so far... I guess they'll compete for the spot next pre-season...

I respect your opinion, but I can not see your justification in keeping a player, who you admittedly called the worst offensive player on the team.

I've already confessed to not knowing *why* I like him. Holy cow, it's not like I have any say on who they keep and why!

Maybe I think the Magic Gloves Fairy™ will pay him a visit and he'll start catching more passes. Maybe hearing "Devery Henderson drops another pass" triggers some subliminal euphoria in my subconscious. Maybe I know that I'll never be subjected to hearing him call himself Uno Nueve.

At least I didn't say "LET'S KEEP JASON DAVID!". I'm not *that* stupid.

It's Henderson's contract year. He's going to want to be shown the money. And there will be other teams that will covet a receiver with his abilities. And of course other coaches will think they can solve the hands problems.

The Saints will not be able to afford to keep him. And IIRC didn't we spend a #1 draft pick on an explosive receiver?

I agree. Henderson and copper are good enough for me. We need to spend some money on defense and keep these bargain receivers. Brees can make anybody look good, when he has time.

Bargin? how so? price per catch or price per drop or price per play not on the field? Copper ok he gets paid min but Henderson? sorry maybe i am not right. I wanted him traded for a pick, any pick in 2006.

Re: Player turnover..........

it is very realistic to see this team next year without Copper, Henderson, Nesbit, Simoneau, Young, Craft, and Bullocks...but the rest of the guys should be back...that doesnt mean they will all have the same role, but they will probably be back with the team. I think the coaching staff remains largely intact, but i do see changes being made as the DB coach and the special team coach may be on the outs. Jason David, Jon Stinchcomb, and Roman Harper will still be saints in some capacity. I think that the staff needs to realize that we cant keep bringing in 2nd tier defensive guys to shore up the unit, they need to add a big name guy to the back end of the defense, and i think the draft is the way to go to add a MLB and some depth in the secondary. In a perfect world, the Saints would give up the farm for Bob Sanders OR Marcus Trufant...then have a draft that would produce a MLB, nickle corner, WR, TE and QB. We have to hope that Alleman could fill in Nesbits spot, find a WR in free agency, and bring in someone who can teach our safety to know his assignment. Its going to be a telling offseason for the club and lets hope they do the right thing.

Re: Player turnover..........

I would love to see one of the draft picks step up and take over at LG or LT next year. Andy would be perfect. Why? because there are LT in this years draft that step right in. Allowing Brown to move back to the right. In a perfect world one of the previous draft choices would do the job. Stiench signed a 2 year deal so I have to wonder if the saints believe this kind of move will happen and we bought extra time to develop the players we have on the team now.
As for CB I do not think it is a big need to go with big guns as much as quality younger player. The two I am eyeballing are:
CB Nnamdi Asomugha
CB Drayton Florence
Then draft your MLB. there is nothing in FA as of yet that is all that great. We can only hope the cap cuts make it possible. as for WR I like a WR that runs good routes and has good hands. Speed can always be found. My vote goes to another mid tier FA:
WR Bryant Johnson
He is lost behind 2 great WR in Arizona. I am still hoping Meachem works out to the #2 guy but Johnson would be a nice insurance policy.
Possible trade bait out there at DT that is kind of interesting is from the Jets.
NT Dewayne Robertson
Talk about being lost in the 34. He in no way belongs there. He is a younger version of HT. In the 43 he is a force.
Just some ideas

Bobaganoosh 12-28-2007 01:01 PM

Re: Player turnover..........

You have to believe that the frustration Payton is feeling is enough to make him say, this is it, we are bringing in some big time defensive help this year. It has to be through a combination of the draft, free agency and trades. The saints can trade a pick to the jets for Robertson or possibly, Vilma since neither of those guys fit the Jets scheme. The Saints can make a run at the CB from the Raiders in free agency or maybe even Bob Sanders. You know Payton loves safeties and i can see him getting the FO to open up the wallet for the best S in the game this side of Ed Reed. Then in the draft, they can take another CB and LB on day one...then fill the needs at WR, TE, QB, and DL on day 2.

The Colts are going to have to decide which player they want to keep, Dallas Clark or Bob Sanders...i dont see how Manning will let them lose Clark.

Re: Player turnover..........

Good. Not that I do not like him it is just the injury bug follows him around. As for Vilma I would love to have the guy before the knee injury. What I have read about him scares me. He may end up a cap cut because of it. IR settlement. Then make your move on him and sign yet another player to a one year deal.

LOL. And now he's only diminished his trade value for us... unfortunately we're left with another release.

Re: Player turnover..........

Henderson should be cut for sure, I'm sure he'll do very well with another team, it seems to always happen to players cut by the Saints, I just hope he doesn't end up in the NFC South.
Fred Thomas, that's an easy cut, boy is garbage right now, not sure which team in the NFL would want him.
That's just two players I know will be gone next year but more to be gone on defense...Like Jason David , gotta go too.
