Let us talk the top 10 Sr. CB in draft

I came across an odd ball listing of CB in a Chicago paper that covered some of the lesser known Cb in the draft. Brief but hits the mark. Think 3rd thru 5th on most of the guys listed here. I know Mike Jenkins is a first or second rounder but the rest are not.

NFL scout talk: Top available cornerbacks

Teams in need of cornerbacks are going to like the 2008 draft. There isn't a Deion Sanders available, but there are some fine prospects, as well as depth. If juniors such as Malcom Jenkins of Ohio State, Reggie Smith of Oklahoma and Aqib Talib of Kansas enter the draft, cornerback will be one of its strengths.

1. Mike Jenkins, South Florida. This is an explosive player with speed and quick feet. Has long arms and can play the ball. Is versatile enough to cover different kinds of receivers at different positions. Could improve his run support.

2. Leodis McKelvin, Troy. Lacks ideal size but is highly athletic and very quick. Has excellent coverage skills. Explosive player with a spring in his step. Is a bit raw. Also is a returner.

3. Terrence Wheatley, Colorado. Very quick cover corner with athleticism. Is an asset in run support. Has a bad wrist that could affect his draft stock. Isn't quite as big as you would like.

4. Charles Godfrey, Iowa. Has size and speed and plays aggressively. Tackles well. Can press a receiver. Probably isn't athletic enough to play man-to-man. Would be excellent in a Cover-2 scheme.

5. Patrick Lee, Auburn. Big, fast and tough. Is aware in coverage, and has the athleticism to play man-to-man. Will play physically. Could slip because of off-the-field concerns.

6. Tracy Porter, Indiana. Highly athletic cover corner who can mirror a receiver. Has top speed. Shows good ball skills. Shies away from contact and isn't much help in run support.

7. Terrell Thomas, USC. Big, athletic corner who fits Cover-2 teams. Is good at pressing and turning and running with receivers. Has some durability issues.

8. DeJuan Tribble, Boston College. Feisty, stocky little corner who is quicker than fast. Is explosive in and out of cuts. Plays aggressively. Lack of size is an issue. Would make a good nickel corner.

9. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Tennessee State. Tall, athletic corner with cover skills and speed. Is unrefined and could take awhile to develop. Is not a very physical player.

10. Trae Williams, South Florida. Doesn't have great size or speed, but he makes plays with athleticism and instincts. Is a little like the Patriots' Asante Samuel.

i wouldnt be surprised to see mike jenkins fall to us in the 2nd. it might be a stretch but if the juniors come out we might be able to catch a break and get him.

The junior corners are more talented. Jenkins will be a good one though.

Good post Hagan. I'll admit I don't know squat about the college players coming into the draft - just what I read online. But let me ask you guys this - do you think we can take a corner in the second or third, instead of the first? Is the talent level really that close between them?

Re: Let us talk the top 10 Sr. CB in draft

A lot depends on the Jr. coming out. Sr class is a bit shaky. There is a couple of players that are projects and a lot that have the skills but lack the height to be elite CB. I see most of the big CB better off at FS than CB.

I dont see Mike Jenkins falling to the second, but with the combine still left a bunch of things can change.

i think McKelvin could be a steal in the second round, if he is there. i think he might fly up draft boards. and give Usama Young some time. he was good on special teams and cbs don't exactly adjust swiftly to the next level, no matter what level they played at in college.

Great post Hagan, I need a college CB education. 1. Mike Jenkins, South Florida. This is an explosive player with speed and quick feet. Has long arms and can play the ball. Is versatile enough to cover different kinds of receivers at different positions. Could improve his run support.

Eveything I've read people hope he falls to the second round

No more Usama Youngs and Chad Jones please. Jenkins actually played good competition at USF. The kid from Troy, forget about it unless its a later round pick. And please don't bring up Colston. Colston was close to being a free agent and even Payton admits he never knew Colston would be the player he is now.

Young wasn't drafted to play "right away". Don't knock small school guys Missile, especially in later rounds.

Two words. Marques Colston.

When the write-up starts with "lacks ideal size", just say no.

Ideal size - I've got to agree with that. No more 5'8" corners, please. 6' is the minimum. Am I crazy for saying that? I don't believe so.

Re: Let us talk the top 10 Sr. CB in draft

ok, but then there is always:
Asante Samuel 5'10
Marcus Trufant 5'11
Deangelo Hall 5'10
Ronde Barber 5'10
Terrence Newman 5'11
Ty Law 5'11
Antoine Winfield 5'9

and so on

Re: Let us talk the top 10 Sr. CB in draft

18. Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy (5-10½, 185) | Previous: 16
Not only a very good cover man with superior recovery ability (runs in the 4.38 range) and the aggressiveness to get the job done in run support, McKelvin has made a name for himself as the top return man in the entire nation. He's also stood out this season in games against the likes of Arkansas, Florida, Oklahoma State and Georgia. With his speed and versatility, McKelvin will bring a great deal of value to a football team.

3rd Round
Darnell Terrell, Missouri
Height: 6-3. Weight: 205.
40 Time: 4.39.
Projected Round: 3-4.
One of the tallest corners in this class, Darnell Terrell's speed at his size is pretty remarkable.

7th Round
Terrell Vinson, Purdue
Height: 5-9. Weight: 183.
40 Time: 4.43.
Projected Round: 7.
His five interceptions and two pick-sixes will get him drafted. His 40 will get him noticed - and possibly placed into a better round.

I bet you we could get both

Re: Let us talk the top 10 Sr. CB in draft

Malcom Jenkins will be good in NFL...built kinda like mckenzie....but Mckelvin is one of those CBs who will dive at balls to attack them rather than lunge....he played well in allstar game and will get a hand on the ball if he is in the area....he could also fit in the saints well...but i would like to see a CB that is physical and big enough to hit someone

Re: Let us talk the top 10 Sr. CB in draft

Young got his on the job training last year. Thats what you have to do with small school guys. Actually he is ahead of the curve. He got on the field. Next year we will see alot more of the small school guys draft in 2007.
I do not mind small school guys at all. If they in the long run are better players than the BCS kids I am all for it. Gotta think long term! Not just one year at a time. Gotta leave the AA mentality behind. This is football.

As most know I am not the first person to say draft a "small school" guy...

However, Rogers-Cromartie, is the guy I really like. Just from what I have seen of the kid, he has "Playmaker" skills. I just can't agree with the assessment that he will have difficulty in the NFL. If I was on the draft committee, he would be my #2 pick. I just don't see him lasting to the 3rd.

I would love to have him with our second round pick. His cover skills looked outstanding during Senior Bowl week and he brought it to the game also... great prospect. Todd McShay's new mock has him going late in the first round to the Cowboys. The latest he will go will be mid second.

Re: Let us talk the top 10 Sr. CB in draft

1. This is a very deep class of junior and senior receivers.

2. One of the more respected draft analyst thinks Cromartie will go in the first round and you think he's a 3rd or 4th rounder?

3. Cromartie played against the top senior quarterbacks and WR's at the Senior Bowl.

4. Though his name helps him stand out, if you watched him play you'd realize it's more than just the name. He has legit cover skills, acceleration, and outstanding recovery speed.

5. I'm tired of hearing we should be skeptical of some of these small school kids because of their level of competition. Some of those kids are as good as if not better then some of these division 1A guys. If you have talent, you have talent... that's why teams scout and evaluate players. Rashean Mathis one of the best corners in the league came from a small school.

Does anyone know our "draft formula"? If so, please share.

Quote:

30. Green Bay Packers -- Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, Tenn. St.
Record: 13-3 | Needs: CB, OT, S, TE, PT
Previous mock selection: Fred Davis, TE, USC
Packers QB Brett Favre certainly would welcome the addition of a tight end like Davis, who can stretch the seam and generate yards after the catch. However, the team has a more pressing need in the defensive secondary, and Rodgers-Cromartie is one of the fastest-rising prospects in the 2008 class right now. The small-school product proved capable of playing with the big boys at the Senior Bowl, where he demonstrated outstanding versatility and athleticism playing both free safety and cornerback throughout the week.
McShay's mock position of Cromartie. I'll continue to post as other evaluators give their updated opinion on him.

I'd also like to say I'm willing to bet Wheatley goes at least a full round and a half after Cromartie is picked.

The only problem with your scouting reports is that Cromartie is not Usama Young.

Then why not pick Cromartie, instead of a guy who has the potential to be just as good? The name similarity is not what made me notice him. Saintfan1976 is the one who brought him to my attention.

Potential, should be a Saints fans most hated word. How many years did this team "Have the MOST POTENTIAL to be the best in the NFC South and Conference".????? Alot, AB was the "Potential" King, and we all know where he is now.

Potential is such an ugly and scary word.

Wheatley: 5-9
Cromartie: 6-1

We already have one Jason David on the squad, thanks.
