Saints backup QB situation
Guys, I know this has been brought up before, but with free agency and the draft coming, it's something that needs to be addressed.
Jamie Martin is going to be a free agent. Do the Saints resign him or let him walk? If the Saints let him walk, or if Martin chooses to walk, is Tyler Palko ready to be a legitimate QB if Brees goes down? One of the reasons I bring this up is we all know how important it is to have a quality backup. Billy Volek pretty much saved the Chargers season today. Is Jamie Martin or Tyler Palko that same type of guy? If not, what free agent QB would you guys try to sign? |
Re: Saints backup QB situation
Anybody is better than Martin. I think he was on the roster as a favor to someone. He should retire.

Other than possibly addressing the O-line in some way, the team needs to leave the offense be this offseason. Every move should address the defensive side of the ball. SFIAH |
Re: Saints backup QB situation
Martin's age worries me. I don't know enough about Palko.

And no, he doesn't "manage" the game well. :moan: |
Re: Saints backup QB situation
Other than re-tooling the entire defense, back-up qb is pressing need.

Do you really think that Colts or Pats fans are discussing the backup QB? SFIAH |
Re: Saints backup QB situation
Write off the season? Not acceptable. Let's face it, we have NO back-up qb. I'm looking for a young kid that Payton can work with. Is Palko the one? Haven't seen enough of him to tell, yet.

Re: Saints backup QB situation
Seeing how Jamie Martin is a free agent and we don't have anyone behind him, back up quarterback is an area of need during this offseason.
I wouldn't mind us bringing back Martin as he knows the offense and has started in this league before. Other guys we should look at are Josh McCown, Quinn Gray, and Cleo Lemon. I think Martin is going to be re-signed though. If Brees were to go down, I sure hope we wouldn't write off the season. When Bledsoe went down, Brady came in. When Trent Green went down, enter Kurt Warner. When McNabb went down, in came Garcia. That's why it's good to have depth and quality backups. |
Re: Saints backup QB situation
I wasn't happy with Jamie performance in the pre-season and he's a vet. I'll take a no name if we are 'sunk'. At least there is upside and the possibility of groom a QB for the future.

Re: Saints backup QB situation
I don't know what to do about the back-up situation. Do we need a proven guy???? Well, yes, of course we do. Martin needs to retire. I really don't want to see us draft another QB. Palko just needs to be groomed, as Euph stated. We just need help at alot of positions. But does the team have the money to spend?

Re: Saints backup QB situation
Take a look at the "Backup" Quarterbacks we have let go in the past. They have gone on to lead some pretty good teams and comeback and beat us at the same time! Palko could be the diamond in the rough we're looking for just in case Brees goes down.
