Zach Thomas To Visit With Saints!
Former Miami Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas is scheduled to visit with the New Orleans Saints before next week's NFL Combine, and then with the Dallas Cowboys after the Combine, the NFL Network's Adam Schefter reported Friday.
Interesting: Thomas to visit with Saints, Cowboys |
Re: Zach Thomas To Visit With Saints!
Thomas, a seven-time Pro Bowl linebacker and one of the most popular and productive players ever to wear a Dolphins uniform, was cut Thursday, the biggest move yet in Miami's massive rebuilding project.
Thomas missed most of last season because of concussions and migraines andwas placed on injured reserve against his wishes in December because of nagging migraines, an aftereffect of an Oct. 21 car crash. Ok let us see what time off brings. I have mixed feelings on this one but if he is signed that would relieve the needs part going into the draft. The saints need a captain on defense and well Thomas is certainly that. Just wish he was younger. wonder what kind of contract he will demand. Next might be Morgan. Maybe are going to use all vets at the LB position like the Pats. Draft CB and a CB/FS in the draft. DT or two. Just to show these vets that we are serious. |
Re: Zach Thomas To Visit With Saints!
Concussions and Migraines,, Why are these not a RED LIGHT of concern ???
Thomas and Morgan two very good players in there prime. But now one big risk. If we sign either and they get hurt AGAIN don't you think will be playing rookies in there place. " Next might be Morgan. Maybe are going to use all vets at the LB position like the Pats. Draft CB and a CB/FS in the draft. DT or two. Just to show these vets that we are serious. " But those vet didn't have concussions !!!! Very Mixed feelings. |
Re: Zach Thomas To Visit With Saints!
I agree that this doesn't sound like the best situation. Players with concussions, unfortunately, tend to have recurring head injuries and are never reliable. Once you get that first one, it's a whole lot easier to get more. Thomas was a great player a few years ago, but now I'm not so sure. I've been begging for some athleticism in the linebacking corps, and that's not exactly what a 35 year-old Zach Thomas with concussion problems would bring.

Re: Zach Thomas To Visit With Saints!
I have a bit of a problem with all of this Dan Morgan and Zach Thomas talk, and Ray Lewis for that matter. Mainly the questions is, do you want to improve, or do you want to maintain this current level of inconsistency and ineptness. Zach Thomas is old and has head problems, Dan Morgan is old and has head problems, and Ray Lewis is old and has mental problems. Hollis Thomas is old, Simoneau is old, Shanle's not that great, McKenzie's getting old, Kevin Kaesviharn is getting old, Bullocks can't seem to be in the right spot to save his life, Jason David is getting old figuratively (i'm just tired of seeing him burnt on every big 3rd down and 4th down), Brian Young is getting old and his body is beginning to show it, Charles Grant is hot and cold and much colder as of late.
Now, do you keep patching this already sorry group with more injured and old players? Or do you begin trying to build something from the ground up with youth (even if it takes a few years)? We have this complex where we have to win NOW, so we seemingly "patch" up weak spots and they never get fixed therefore we STAY mediocre forever. We're not willing to invest for a stable future, we'd rather stay mediocre and perhaps "get lucky". It's upsetting to see, it really is. And there's no immediate fix in sight, so prepare for more mediocre for years to come. I'm not encouraged right now by the lack of activity by the Saints - hopefully, I'll be encouraged on draft day when we hopefully address the DEFENSE with some impact players. |

Re: MERGED: Free-Agent Linebackers to Visit Saints Monday
dan is the one with a history not Zach. I am not crazy about his age but I would not pass on him becuase of injuries. He just does not have a history of concussions. I say for leadership and showing the young guys you draft what it takes to be an impact player in the NFL. He is one of the best you can find.

Re: MERGED: Free-Agent Linebackers to Visit Saints Monday
I would take Zach Thomas in a heartbeat, no questions asked. He's never had injury problems before; it took him getting in a car wreck to even show up as more than a blip on the injury report. He might have lost a step but he's still one hell of a player and would provide so much value with leadership alone.
Morgan, I'm a bit iffy on. He has great potential and is never healthy. If he would take a small contract to contribute on special teams and spot duty he'd still probably be better than about 2/3s of the LBs we have now. |
Re: MERGED: Free-Agent Linebackers to Visit Saints Monday
I dont have mixed feelings, either guy would be a mistake. We need a younger stud ala Lance Briggs to led this defense, not guys who have a 50/50 of always being out with migraines, concussions, etc.

Morgan is done. Damaged goods. Thomas on the other hand, I might take a chance on. It was against his wishes last year that he was placed on IR. I believe he still has a lot left to leave on the field.

Re: MERGED: Free-Agent Linebackers to Visit Saints Monday
Well, the Saints may not get an opportunity to talk to Zach. PFT is reporting that Zach is making his first stop in New England. Gee, what a surprise...
THOMAS TO VISIT PATS ON MONDAY Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe reports that free-agent linebacker Zach Thomas will meet with the Patriots on Monday. Thomas, released by the Dolphins on Thursday, already has been linked to the Saints, Cowboys, Jets, and Bills. New England apparently will be his first visit. The big question is whether any team will be able to give Thomas medical clearance to play. Concussions limited him to five games in 2007. |

Re: MERGED: Free-Agent Linebackers
I don't think I'd take a chance on either linebacker. They're both too old. Morgan is injury prone. Thomas, while he may have leadership abilities, is damaged goods from his car accident. Coach Payton is the one who said they want to get younger and more athletic. The best kind of leadership is by example. The Saints could rely on McKenzie, Smith, Grant, and Fujita for leadership. The Saints need a young tackling machine in the middle. Someone who can dish out punishment as well as take it. Morgan and Thomas will not be able to take the punishment. Briggs would be ok. But the young man from USC, I can't remember his name off hand, or Dan Connor would be a better choice. A starting DT would be just as good. In the games I got to see on television, the Saints were awful agains the run. And there was no pass rush whatsoever. That's why Jason David got burned so many times. It wasn't because of his inability to play. It was because he had to cover the WR for such long periods of time. Any receiver could get open with that amount of time.
