Re: looking ahead to the offseason

I mentioned drafting a DT in the first round because rookie DT's seem to fare better than rookie CB's. Not to mention the fact that Brian Young is breaking down physically, and he is unsigned...there is no one at all available in free agency at that position. So drafting one in the first round makes sense to me. Trading a 4th for Vilma makes sense to me...if he gets hurt or if he doesnt pan out, so what...a 4th round pick is worth it for a guy who breaks great potential and the reward far outweights the risk. Signing a top notch CB and drafting one in the second round helps out this year, but mostly helps out next year. Then we just need to find a safety and another LB somewhere and we will be in good position. This is all done without spending a ton of money and we can lock down Smith, Colston and Evans and still not be tight on the cap.

Re: looking ahead to the offseason

they absolutely need to bring in a few players that are relatively young, smart, and play 110% on every play on the defensive side......
i really don't care who as long as they do that.......
if they are sincere in rebuilding the defense, this is a good start, imo.......
then, address mostly defense in the draft........although i would like some depth added on the offense as well , hell, just build a s.b. team, alright?

Re: looking ahead to the offseason

I said this earlier in the year, but our pass rush got nullified because there was no consistently good play by the defensive tackles. Hollis Thomas usually just sat there and no one else could push the pocket, which allowed teams to double on Grant and Smith at will. A DT who can crush the pocket is an absolute need for this team. There should be plenty of good ones in rounds 1-2 but if a guy like Dorsey or Ellis falls far enough to us I think we should do everything we can to snatch him up.
