A Samuels To Eagles
SAMUEL SET TO JOIN THE FLOCK
Various media reports, collected and referenced by our good friends at SportingNews.com, indicate that cornerback Asante Samuel will indeed sign a contract with the Eagles on Friday. It's reportedly a five-year, $47.2 million deal. To the casual fan, that's short of the $10 million per year average from the eight-year, $80 million deal signed last year by Nate Clements of the 49ers. As everyone in PFT Planet knows, the Clements deal is actually seven years and $64 million, making it worth a hair over $9 million per year. Samuel's deal carries an average of nearly $9.5 million. They could have added a phony final year that would have pushed the average to $10 million per year or more, and we respect both sides for doing what looks to be a "real" deal. Also, there's a certain irony regarding the five-year duration of the contract. Typically, the Eagles like to lock players up for looooong periods of time. As it now stands, Samuel's deal will expire before the contracts signed by some of the young players who cashed in early. |
Re: A Samuels To Eagles
More contracts need to be done this way... often contracts are filled with so much dummy money and years that players will never receive or play. And it's much easier on the eyes.

Re: A Samuels To Eagles
Signing Briggs is the Saints last shot at redemption IMO cause i'm officially pissed!!!!

Re: A Samuels To Eagles
Lito Sheppard was on the market earlier... maybe we could swing a deal for him or Sheldon Brown. 3's a crowd. With all the rumors circulating, I'm surprised we haven't been linked to Briggs yet.

The Vilma trade was a great step in the right direction, and if Vilma is healthy he has more upside and is younger and at the moment cheaper than Briggs. I also think that with the draft being so deep in both LBs and CBs there is a good chance we can get some quality players later in the draft in two positions of need. And with the draft being so deep at LB and CB I think our biggest need in FA is DT, because after the top two DTs in the draft there is Kentwan Balmer, who I think would be a terrible pick a 10. Maybe the Saints will be able to pull off some draft day trades that will give them more picks or some quality players like they were able to do 2 years ago for Jeff Faine and Hollis. So far we have gotten off to a great start |
Re: A Samuels To Eagles
We already have mediocrity on the team. No need to add that. Overpaying is not overpaying, its the price to have a premier player.

I wouldn't call Johnathan Vilma a mediocre player either. So far this has definitely been one of the biggest moves of free agency. |
