Briggs visit

It has been reported that Lance Briggs will visit New Orleans on Monday.

That is of course if he is still a free agent. I believe the main competition for his services is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

You cant help but think that having Vilma in the mix now will help our chances at getting Briggs.

Briggs 'allegedly' shot down the NOLA visit as a rumor...

Wait a false rumor... does that mean it's true?

See what too many years of listening to Nick Saban can do to you!!!!

Re: Briggs visit

Score 670 out of Chicago says that the Bucs are not in the picture. According to them Briggs did not visit Tampa, never had any intention of signing with them and they are not in play at this time. Who knows...

Re: Briggs visit

So is he signing with NO ONE. He seems to be shooting down every rumor.

Re: Briggs visit

Well...no one knows what to think anymore...apparently Briggs is either going to resign in Chicago or he is going to try to open his own strip club. Who knows whats going on...the smokescreens have begun already.

Well... as we know, the media can flip anything by relaying 'just enough' information and/or withholding certain key points...

As Boba mentioned, it was reported that Briggs will visit with the Saints on Monday... The rumors that I've heard concerning 670am in Chicago mention that he is 'Visiting New Orleans' as in, currently here...

If Briggs relays to the media (for the link I posted above) that it isn't true, then he currently isn't in New Orleans visiting... BUT!!! The new story DID say it might not be immediately, but could be headed to NOLA at some point.

Monday could be 'at some point'?

Or do you think they go more for the sensationalism effect and would rather embellish vs. tone it down?

too much to think about...

All I know, is that I want Vilma healthy to fight alongside of Fajita, Briggs, and then a few solid (mid to upper tier) CBs behind them with the ability to move up (if we desire) to acquire Ellis/Dorsey in the draft... I figure this combination gives us a SOLID upper-echelon defense for the next few years to come.

The fact that Briggs added "that's all I can say" may mean that a meeting with the Saints is a possibility in the future.

Re: Briggs visit

I really think the Saints are talking seriously with Briggs & his agent
as we speak. Makes too much sense and it fits the Saints profile of keeping everything low key until the last minute.

Re: Briggs visit

Why would he shoot the story down unless it was true? Think about it. If the story was false, the smart thing to do would be to stay quiet and let the rumor spread to extract more money from whomever he really was talking to. The only reason I can think of to squash the story is if it's true. That way other teams might stay on the line rather than look elsewhere. I have to believe that the Saints are talking to his agent right now but that may just be wishful thinking.

Re: Briggs visit

I think we should sign Briggs, Florence, Dyson and trade for Stroud (give them our 2nd) and with the Vilma pickup our defense is instantly upgraded to better than average. We could then use the first pick for anything we want like a good OT (Clady), RB (Mendenhall), TE (Davis or Keller) or even yes a QB (Ryan, Brohm or Flacco) to backup Drew.

Re: Briggs visit

That's a lot of money Cher, I know we have some cap space, but I don't think we have that much.

And if we were going to go offense at #10 (only after taking care of all positions in FA), then I'd suggest OT only.

I've got a good feeling about landing Briggs on Sunday/Monday and landing Gay today!

Man if that happens I just cant wait for the draft.

Re: Briggs visit

Now if briggs signs then we have a better idea of what direction in the draft we would go. If not OLB at 10 is the main target.

Actually the best part of getting Briggs would be that we wouldn't have to reach for Rivers at #10. We can draft a CB or (if the unthinkable happens) Ellis/Dorsey.

Yes I agree if he signs with us they have to do whatever they can do to get Dorsey or Ellis.

ideally we'd sign Briggs and Gay, resign Jahri Evans and Marques Colston, then draft Cromartie.

I don't know what it would take to move up but if we get Briggs, it has to be considered, I would think. With Dorsey or Ellis on board along with Briggs, Vilma and a pass rush specialist DE, we might be ok with Gay, Young, David, Bullocks, Harper & MM in the backfield. Before you go open-loop at this suggestion, consider the following. On 1st & 2nd down we should be able to stop the run with the front 7, allowing Harper to stay back in coverage. Maybe, just maybe, Bullocks won't bite so much on play action, knowing that the front 7 have it covered. Then on 3rd down, we can bring in our pass rushing DE, slide Grant into the middle next to Dorsey/Ellis and put some real heat on the QB. All of this has the net effect of taking a lot of pressure off the defensive backfield.

On the other hand, if we don't manage to get Dorsey or Ellis, I'm ok with picking up a CB in the first (DRC, McKelvin, Talib, etc.).

Imagine this Fujita, Simoneau (after Vilma gets hurt in game 5) and Shanle and we'll still have the same cornerbacks and defensive tackles.

Just click your heels together Dorothy and it will come true, we all know it will.

Re: Briggs visit

I think that if Vince Hall is available around round 4 or five we should take a serious look. When he was healthy he was a beast and a leader in the middle for VT. I believe that he could shore up our run defense if Vilma isn't ready or gets hurt. Hell hes definitely better than Simaneedstogo!
