Good or Bad? All of our Receivers Return.

Questions abound at the WR Position:

Will Robert Meachem make an impact this year? Will he upstage Colston? Has David Patton lost a step and can he be effective in the slot? Does Reggie Bush line up as a WR on certain plays? How does Copper get on the field? Will Devery Henderson catch a cold? Those are some loaded questions, so loaded in fact, I'm going to have to seek out Ricky Williams to be able to comment.

If Meachem doesn't start this year, can last years draft be considered a complete bust? Does Reggie Bush hit the line before it hits him? Does he need to touch the ball even more in the receiving game or can he be effective between the tackles?

I ask these questions, you provide the answers.

Pass that to me Ricky, it's a long offseason.
We have a drug policy at my work. If you're not on drugs, you're fired.

LOL...

Yes, resigning all of our receivers is a good thing (Henderson is yet to be seen). One more year of experience for all with Drew and Payton is nothing but positive.

I'm betting this year's routes and catches will be crisper than Ricky Williams' brain stem.

Ricky who? I forgot. What a brain stem anyway?

Henderson is such a tease. I really think he has a hard time adjusting to short balls and where he's going to any take a hit. He excells in running deep patters. If he can feel the goal, he catches the ball. He's a gamer in that regard. Still, he such is a tease player. If we stop throwing him the ball under 15 yards, it should work out.

Henderson's Stats:
81% of the time he catches the ball we get a 1st down.
51% of the time he catches the ball we get 20+ yards.
15% of the time he catches the ball we score!

Will Robert Meachem make an impact this year? Yes... one would hope.

Will he upstage Colston? Extremely unlikely unless Colston misses half the season.

Has David Patten lost a step and can he be effective in the slot? Perfect slot receiver.

Does Reggie Bush line up as a WR on certain plays? The obvious answer is yes.

How does Copper get on the field? Special teams and barring injuries... fourth WR.

Will Devery Henderson catch a cold? Maybe towards December... it's quite possible.

If Meachem doesn't start this year, can last years draft be considered a complete bust? No... that doesn't mean Alleman, Bushrod, and Young won't have an impact.

Does Reggie Bush hit the line before it hits him? If he has a positive YPC... one would assume the line is getting some push.

Does he need to touch the ball even more in the receiving game or can he be effective between the tackles? Both.

What about Moore? Is he the odd man odd? I really like the kid, has great hands, but couldn't seem to get open. With Green coming in as PR, are his days numbered in the B&G?

Re: Good or Bad? All of our Receivers Return.

Re-signing Patten was a great move as he is an excellent slot receiver and can still get down field for deep balls, not to mention the veteran presence he provides to the receiving corps.

Meachem... who knows? Receivers are such a crap shoot which is why I hated using a first round pick on one, especially when the Saints had more pressing needs at TE, LB, and CB. No way he upstages Colston though, Colston is the next big name receiver in this league and wont be snubbed from the pro bowl again.

Bush will always line up wide on certain plays, if he doesn't he is not being used to his full potential, not to mention the fact that this is a Sean Payton offense.

Devery is a tease, he'll make a few great catches and drop a few easy ones that cost first downs. We can only hope he grows out of that.

I'm still mad at Copper for the Pittsburgh game in 06, if he never sees the field I'm fine with it.

Man I completely forgot about Lance Moore.
He could be the odd man out if we keep Skyler Green. In Green, we do have an excellent kick/punt returner and a player that could turn into a pretty decent WR. Lance Moore has one thing you can't teach and that's sure hands. He makes the tough catch look routine and you don't see that too often and I don't care what you say, his level of catching the ball cannot be coached.

It's going to be a tough decision that I don't think we can call here.

From His Website: Skyler Green Discusses Return To New Orleans
Thursday, January 03, 2008

You were born in Louisiana and attended LSU; how does it feel to be signed by a team so close to home?

“It is definitely a big thing for me because ever since Katrina I have wanted to come home and play football for the New Orleans Saints. Hopefully I can do some things to change the things that are going on in New Orleans and possibly get some foundations going and things like that.”

Besides being so close to home, what made you want to come play for the Saints?

“I think it is a better opportunity. I think that coach Payton has done well and coached the guys up well. I also think he knows how to use his players very well, so I think I will have a better opportunity here with the Saints.”

Did the fact that the Saints have some UFA’s (Unrestricted Free Agent) at the wide receiver position also play a role in you wanting to be a Saint?

“I think so because my agent and I sat down and talked, and he told me that a couple guys were up and I am just looking forward for the opportunity to go out and hopefully I can make the roster.”

You played in Cincinnati this past year, and they have twp Pro-Bowl caliber receivers. What did you learn anything from them?

“I think I did learn a lot from those guys. Just looking for the certain defenses, it may be man or zone, but you just have to find your spots and know that sometimes that your route is not going to go exactly how it was supposed to go and you just have to be an athlete and make the play.”

What are you looking forward to this off season?

“I want to improve from last year. Over this off season I am going to train hard and do the things that I have to do to come into training camp ready to make the 53-man roster.”

Are you excited about the fact that you may be playing alongside a former LSU teammate in Devery Henderson?

“Definitely, it will be a big reunion for us. I have not seen Devery (Henderson) in a while, the last time I saw him actually was when we played the Saints in the pre-season when I was with the Bengals. I think for both of us reuniting, it could be a fun thing and a lot of big plays could be made from this thing.”

Re: Good or Bad? All of our Receivers Return.

Our WR's will be fine.

Will Devery drop some balls??? Sure he will. So will Colston, and Mecham, and Patten, and Copper.

With one more year for Drew and his WR corps, they should be on the money with each other by now, wouldn't you think.?.?

By the way this is my 1000 POST!!!!!

I use to wonder how some of you guys had 1000+ post, and figured you didn't have much to do. :-P LOL.

Re: Good or Bad? All of our Receivers Return.

I like the idea of all of them coming back especially when you consider how much timing and chemistry is needed to excel. But you have to know that one or two of them isnt going to make it.

Assuming Meachem is ready, all reports are that he is, someone has to go. Copper and Moore both have roles on special teams but one of them is going to be in, the other is going to be gone.

patten, Henderson and Meachem dont play special teams and of course neither does Colston, but i think those 4 are safe. The last spot is going to come down to either Moore, Copper, or some late round draft pick or by some miracle, Skyler Green may get a shot but i doubt that.

I would have liked to add Bryant Johnson, but maybe his price is too high (after the Vikings overpaid Berrian).

Its good. I actually like Dev Hend coming back.. He is a deep threat.. but the only guy I am not too fond of is Copper..

Re: Good or Bad? All of our Receivers Return.

After being the 1st ranked passing team in '06 followed by the 2nd ranked passing team in '07 I think it makes sense to resign our wr. Not to fond of Henderson but as a #3 or 4 there is less balls his way to drop.
I am more excited about signing our offensive players than resigning our defensive players. Again we were the 4th ranked offense and near the bottom defensively so if there was a area we needed a new direction and players it should be on the defensive side.

Re: Good or Bad? All of our Receivers Return.

All our hopes rest on Mech's shoulders next year. if we go with this group he is key. I want a WR in the draft that can play the slot.
Andre Caldwell, WR, Florida
in the third. But not at the cost of passing on
Justin King, CB, Penn State
he is the CB in the draft that will, in two years of coaching, become one of the solid Cb in the draft.
So in the fourth I am looking at
William Franklin, WR, Missouri
Who i think is a major sleep in the draft.

Will Robert Meachem make an impact this year? Yes.

Will he upstage Colston? Not unless _everyone_ doubles Colston.

Has David Patten lost a step and can he be effective in the slot? He has NOT lost a step.

Does Reggie Bush line up as a WR on certain plays? I think he will.

How does Copper get on the field? on offense? 5 WR sets.

Will Devery Henderson catch a cold? I think so!

If Meachem doesn't start this year, can last years draft be considered a complete bust? not at all.

Does Reggie Bush hit the line before it hits him? yes.

Does he need to touch the ball even more in the receiving game or can he be effective between the tackles? both.

Re: Good or Bad? All of our Receivers Return.

I would not be surprised to see the saints draft a WR as high as the third.
Andre Caldwell, WR, Florida
I am really liking this kid as a slot. He plays the middle and knows how to block.
William Franklin, WR, Missouri in the fourth is a nice option
Harry Douglas, WR, Louisville in the fifth is also good

So I am not so sure anyone is safe at 3, 4 or 5 at WR. None of them were that impressive in any role they played on the team. All can be replaced. Patton is safest because of veteran leadership. If we keep him the the slot he will have a great year for us but he needs rotation.

Re: Good or Bad? All of our Receivers Return.

If Meachem doesn't step up, the Saints don't have a legit #2 WR. I would love for Nelson to somehow slip to the 3rd. But, without a fourth, the Saints need to get a combination of CB, DT and S or ROLB in the first three rounds.

So what are you saying?!?!?!?!? He sucks? He's waiting to catch on with another team to explode into an all-pro? It's not like Eddie Kennison, aka Fast Eddie, didn't do badly after leaving the Saints in Kansas City!
