suppose atlana calls you on draft day...

they want your 10 spot and 3rd, #79.
they offer 3 second round picks, #35,38, and 49.
do you pull the trigger and walk away with
your second, # 41, their 3 seconds, #35,38,49,
plus your 5th, 149, your 6th, 172, and your 7th, 203?

I'd tell them to wait until we are on the clock at 10. See who's available, and then make the call. If Leodis, Dorsey or Ellis are there, then I don't trade, otherwise yes.

From a value chart perspective...the Saints give up 1495 points and Atlanta is offering 1480.

Last year the Texans made a swap with the Falcons as part of the Schaub trade and chose Amobi Okoye at #10.

From a financial standpoint, let's compare the signings of the 2007 picks involved:

10. Okoye's contract has $12.785 million in cash guarantee and a maximum value of $17.6 million. The cash guarantee is a 12.6-percent increase over what the No. 10 player received in 2006.

35. Tampa Bay - Arron Sears, OT/OG Tennessee (7/26/2007: Signed a four-year contract. 2008: $370,000, 2009: $460,000, 2010: $550,000, 2011: Free Agent)

38. Oakland (from Arizona) - Zach Miller, TE Arizona State (7/28/2007: Signed a four-year contract. 2008: $370,000, 2009: $460,000, 2010: $550,000, 2011: Free Agent

39. Atlanta (from Houston) - Justin Blalock, OG Texas (7/26/2007: Signed a four-year, $5 million contract. The deal included a $1.04 million signing bonus. 2008: $370,000, 2009: $460,000, 2010: $550,000, 2011: Free Agent)

So, let's assume that all three (#'s 35, 38, and 39) all have a contract value of $5 million. Then from a financial perpective...a good deal to get three for one and still have some $$$ left over.

From a player standpoint...I would think there will be some food for thought on both the offensive and defensive side with those three 2nd round picks (not to mention the addition of #41).

IMHO...I'd make the trade

However, the possibility of the Falcons trading with a divisional opponent are slim to none and slim just left town. Not to mention, the Falcons are rebuilding, and we have all heard the success stories of building through the draft.

BTW; look at the Okoye's contract and notice the 12.6% increase over the #10 pick in 2006....which is what Benson will be interested in!

No, I would want players, not draft choices. Defensive players.

Wouldn't you have more choices with that option??

That's an interesting idea ssmitty and I'd have to give serious thought to that. With 3 second rounders, we should be able to get pretty good players at DT, LB, and CB. Very tempting and the money works out great as biloxi pointed out. Any trio of Connors, Lofton, Mayo, Moore, Cason, King, Lee, Sims, and many others would be a very good draft. It's definitely worth considering.

that's what i was thinking papz, lot of talent to be had in the 2nd round. to make it even point wise, atlanta could give up a 6th or 7th to boot.
while it probably won't happen, it is interesting to have 4 2nd round picks.
hell, atlanta has 3........
we need to rebuild too, especially on defense and with the extra picks we could get at least 2 nice defenders not to mention a hell of a wide reciever and a hell of a running back to boot.......
atlanta needs ot, og, qb,s,and de. they are capable of getting the best one with their first and our 10th.............and new orleans is at the podium, we have a trade, atlanta is now on the clock......tick,tick,tick..........

No - would not do it. Before FA period I would say yes. But now we need an impact player to come in and contribute and compliment what we have now.

Secondly I don't think that would benefit ATL much. I would go after some talent with many picks.

Atlanta would be stupid to do the trade. 3 second rounders? They need bodies to rebuild with. So we'd end up with 4 second round picks? I'd do it in a second. The only problem becomes the Saints would have to cut some pretty good players in the end, and our second round picks usually have trouble contributing right away. Still, you could always take the best play available.

I just wouldn't be comfortable trading our first round pick in which we have the chance of drafting a guy who can come in and possibly start right away. Plus, with our terrible history of second round draft picks, I'd be wary of trading away our chance to draft a guy with a top 10 draft grade.

Also, I completely agree with saintmissile, trading with an inter divisional rival doesn't make sense. Say they draft Matt Ryan with the #3, and then if we trade our #10, they can draft somebody like Clady. Right away, they've addressed their two biggest holes with a good quarterback and a good left tackle. I just don't think it makes sense, IMO.

Hell yes you do that trade. Atlanta never will. When you can get Colston and Evans on later picks compared to the first round guys we've had, why not take a chance on getting three d-studs in a deep class of cb's and Lb's.
