I doubt seriously that Harper will be included in this trade. That was the NYGs proposal not our offer. It more likeky will be a two and a conditional pick next year .

Jeremy Shockey Searches for New Real Estate, Saints Might Have Moved On
Posted Apr 16th 2008 12:15PM by Tom Mantzouranis
Filed under: NY Giants, Saints, NFL Draft

These pesky Jeremy Shockey rumors aren't subsiding, and they won't soon if a New Era Scouting report is true that Shockey is scoping out houses in New Orleans. It's a throwaway line in a larger article, and given my skepticism regarding the credibility of all of these new "inside source" football sites, I'm not sure how accurate it is. But there ya go.

The New York Post has refuted rumors that Shockey will be dealt to the Saints (with the most recent gossip that the Saints turned down demands of a second-round pick and safety Roman Harper). The Post, however, is the only source outright denying the rumors, and I tend to believe where there's smoke there's fire. Plus, it's the Post.

I think dealing for Shockey would be beneficial, but only for the right price. If the Giants must have anything close to what they've asked for, the Saints would be better off exploring other options. Which brings us to Dustin Keller.

The Saints brought arguably the best tight end in the draft for a visit that extended beyond the typical pleasantries of pre-draft stop-and-chats. The team rolled out the red carpet for Keller, and his fellow Purdue alum Drew Brees said he'd "love" to have Keller as his tight end in 2008.

The Saints might very possibly be interested in Keller, who should be around when they pick at #40. Or this could be a smokescreen to force the Giants' hands. Either way, they're improving at tight end. Meanwhile, Jim Ross' credibility hangs in the balance.

Re: shockey to saints? New Update on Page 6!!

I'm not really sold on Shockey as a huge improvement to our offense. It seems to me that Colston runs a lot of routes that a TE might. We don't need two such players, do we?

However, that said, someone please make it sound sensible that we turn down Harper and our 2nd round pick for Shockey? That seems like a deal for us! Shockey is a proven player at a position of need for us. Harper is an ok safety. Furthermore, in the abstract the value of a Safety and a TE are about the same. If we're just going to take a TE with our 2nd rounder, then why not get Shockey and try and pick up another marginal Safety in the 3rd or 4th?

Speculation: maybe the whole Shockey thing is just a part of a plan to trade up with our #1? I don't see how we can trade up from 10 to 2 without giving away the farm. Perhaps our 10 and Shockey and something else get us what we need to get up to 2 overall? Just a thought.

it isnt.. giving up a 2nd and a starter for a player who the giants dont really want anyway, dispite the reports that they do, is high.. everyone knows they dont...

id give a 2nd straight up or harper and a 6th.. anything more then that and they are trying to push to hard.. that being said.. i think that the deal will happen probably when the saints are on the clock in the 2nd round..

Re: shockey to saints? New Update on Page 6!!

Pak,

Thanks for the insight. Just to be sure I'm on the right track with what you are saying, is the idea this: since the Giants are more than happy to part with Shockey, we should be able to get him for less? That sounds good.

There are a lot of teams on which Harper would not be a starter, but Shockey, I take it, would be a starter on almost every team. This gives Shockey an edge in value. I still maintain that, other things equal, a TE and a S are about of the same value wrt being skill positions. Thus, the question is this: is the difference in value between Shockey and Harper a second round pick? I say, maybe. Leaving off the fact that the Giants "need" to move him, do you disagree with this?

Of course, I'm on board with getting the best possible deal we can, but I'm just trying to check my intuitions on such a trade. Maybe I'm undervaluing Harper?

pakowitz 04-22-2008 05:24 PM

Re: shockey to saints? New Update on Page 6!!

well one of the Giants "need" positions is safety.. they lost gabil wilson in FA and even tho they signed sammy knight... they still need to be upgrading that position.. if they took harper, he would be the starter on that team in my opinion..

Re: shockey to saints? New Update on Page 6!!

I would much rather we take Dustin Keller in the 2nd than use it to trade for Shockey, 99 times out of 100. Keller has a great work ethic, is productive and is a physical specimen. Shockey will just be a headache, one way or another, and just isn't worth the trouble. Keller would be a beast.

jeanpierre 04-22-2008 07:18 PM

Re: shockey to saints? New Update on Page 6!!

Another point...

If Giants want to move Shockey, they'll do it now...

Reasoning: His Salary Cap hit for the Giants, if traded now, is approximately 1.5 mil this year and doubles next year to 3.0 mil next season...

Even though I'm a big fan of the Mannings, Eli is Eli and if Shockey comes back into that huddle, well let's just say the Giants don't need Eli distracted...

Drew Brews, Employee No. 9, will give him a Shut the F#@! Up, and tell him to Man Up and Do as your Told twenty second In Service Speech and that'll be that; Brees spreads it as good as anybody in the league anyways, So Shockey will get his touches, regardless...

look why are we all giving away picks. there has to be away to swap 10 and 31 and get the deal done. Granted it is a high cost point wise I would rather picks 31, 40 and shocky over 10 and shocky.

Just read that the Falcons are in the running for Shockey, and they have a lot more ammo if they were inclined to get him. Man, it would really suck if they got both Shockey and ended up with Dorsey, 2 players I like to see in B&G.

Champ Kind you've got the best Avatar, man, really...

Anyways...Looks like the NYPost is on the Giant payroll trying to drive up value for Shockey, cause...

Seahawks deny interest in Shockey
Could Jeremy Shockey be the answer to the Seahawks' need for a tight end? No, the club said Wednesday, after the New York Daily News reported that the Seahawks are among the teams interesting in trading for the Giants' disgruntled tight end. The Seahawks quickly dismissed the report, saying they have no serious interest in the four-time Pro Bowler, who sat out the Giants' run to the Super Bowl after breaking his leg in Week 15 of the regular season. The Seahawks plan to address the tight end position in the NFL draft this weekend. -- Seattle P-I

So that leaves the Falcons as the most serious threat to landing Shockey and with all those picks, it's a possibility except for the fact that Shockster wants to play for a contender, NOW, and play for his ol' ball coach that gave him his best production...

Could Shockey to Saints be a done deal?

PFW believes that Giants TE Jeremy Shockey has been traded to the Saints for multiple draft picks, including the team's second-rounder (No. 40). We'll try to confirm this as soon as we can.

Shockey traded? A deal might be in place with Saints (Around the NFL)

SHOCKEY TO SAINTS ALREADY IN PLACE?

Posted by Mike Florio on April 25, 2008, 6:06 p.m.
There’s a kinda-sorta report from PFW that the Giants and the Saints might have already worked out a deal that would send tight end Jeremy Shockey to New Orleans.

The Giants would receive the Saints’ second-round pick (No. 40 overall) and other draft picks.

So why would the move be kept under wraps? Because the Giants don’t want to stand in the shoes of the Saints at No. 40 until the Saints are on the clock. If the deal would be done now, then the teams at No. 41 and beyond would be able to consider their options for trading up, in order to get in front of the Giants and pluck a guy whom the Giants might be targeting.

Generally speaking, the best approach to draft-pick trades is to do the deal when one of the teams is on the clock. Indeed, it would have been ideal for the Vikings and the Chiefs to finalize the Jared Allen trade while the Vikings were on the clock with the No. 17 selection in round one.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, however, there’s too much that needs to happen when a franchise player is traded to a new team. The player needs to sign his tender, then he gets traded and signs a long-term contract (or vice-versa). It’s simply too hard to make all that happen in ten minutes.

In all other cases, however, it’s far wiser to do the deal so that the team acquiring a pick from another team gets that pick at a time when that pick is the next pick to be, um, picked.

Yeah I agree with you... I thought a second rounder was to high as it was for Shockey. To give up anything more is to much. We were robbed.

Payton better get us back to the NFC this season or else.

SHOCKEY NOT AWARE OF TRADE
Posted by Mike Florio on April 25, 2008, 6:40 p.m.
In response to reports that a trade possibly is in place that would send tight end Jeremy Shockey from the Giants to the Saints, a league source tells us that Shockey has not been notified of the potential transaction.

It doesn’t mean that a trade won’t happen, or that a trade isn’t already in place.

And if the goal of the Giants is to keep the deal under wraps until the Saints are on the clock at No. 40, there’s no reason for either team to let Shockey in on the news. It’s well known that Shockey wants out of New York, and he reportedly has told friends that he’d welcome a trade to the Saints.

Sources: Saints, Shockey stuck in trade limbo

Where's Jeremy Shockey? Still a member of the New York Giants.

New Orleans's apparent deal for tight end Jeremy Shockey has hit a delay because of the Giants' demand for more than a No. 2 draft pick for the former Pro Bowler, ESPN's John Clayton reports.

The Saints have been debating offering a No. 2 pick, according to sources, but some in the organization would prefer including no more than a No. 3 pick. New Orleans officials' reluctance makes the deal, which could get done on the draft-day clock or Saturday morning before the draft, difficult to pull off.

The Giants have already conducted a physical on Shockey, which could be offered to the Saints if he can't make it to New Orleans in time to have one. Sources indicate the Saints are seriously interested in Shockey, so a deal is likely to get done.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis this week has declined to discuss players under contract with any other team, and has been evasive while meeting with reporters at the Saints' training headquarters. He has apologetically said that he did not want to tip off other teams to the Saints' draft plans.

The 28-year-old Shockey, who earned the first NFL championship of his career in January, broke his leg on Dec. 16 in a game against the Washington Redskins and did not play in the Super Bowl.

He finished the 2007 regular season with 57 receptions and three touchdowns.

An interesting thought here… I noticed on the Rotoworld Fantasy Mill that the Saints have entered the bidding for Lito Sheppard, and that they would be offering their 2nd rounder… the same 2nd rounder tied to Shockey. What are the chances that the Saints are doing the Eagles bidding and trade Shockey to the Eagles for Lito Sheppard, since the Giants would never trade him to a division foe… I know they have LJ Smith under the tender but as far as I know they havent reached a long term deal with him…

We let our #1 receiver do what the #1 receiver does, instead of what the TE does, while not losing a major amount of ability on the TE routes.

Plus, the intangible benefits. That is one more proven player on the Saints offense that defensive coaches have to contend with. Eric Johnson and Billy Miller do NOT send shivers down the backs of opposing coaches. Shockey may not cause fear, but he will garner some respect from opposing coaches. Especially in the redzone.

Stand firm on a third round pick til right before our second round pick. If anything, offer a conditional pick next year also. I would love for a deal like this to happen.

Re: shockey to saints trade stalls.. Update on Pg 11

As to the Saints, they can’t trade the same pick twice (duh), so what are they up to? Our guess is that they’re trying to play two NFC East rivals against each other, hoping that one of them takes the Saints’ second-rounder in order to prevent the other from getting it.

Or maybe, as a reader suggested, the Saints are merely the straw man in a three-way trade. Maybe they’ll get Sheppard with that second-round pick and then trade him straight up to the Giants for Shockey....Fond this on PFT...never looked at it like this but maybe this is what is going to happen.

Saints inch closer to acquiring TE Shockey from Giants

FOX Sports on MSN - NFL - Saints inch closer to acquiring TE Shockey from Giants

The New Orleans Saints are trying to land TE Jeremy Shockey and have offered what could be enough to get the deal done.

FOXSports.com has learned that New Orleans early this week offered the Giants a second-round pick in today's draft as well as either a sixth-rounder this year or a fifth in 2009 to get the deal sealed. Despite reports to the contrary, the deal has been on the table for quite some time and remains available today.

The Giants wanted a second-rounder as well as safety Roman Harper but the Saints were reluctant to make that move.

Shockey has told several friends he wanted to join Drew Brees and Co. and was hoping the deal got done by the time the draft began.

peter king on Shockey trade
Per SI.com

The Saints are on the clock with the 40th pick in the draft, and this is the pick they should be trading to the Giants for Jeremy Shockey, and ESPN goes to commercial, and the draft room here is emptying out, TV people headed off to the arena downtown for the NBA playoff game (you mean the Hawks are still in the playoffs?), and here comes the news ...

No Shockey trade. The Saints pick cornerback Tracy Porter, cornerback, Indiana.

When Sean Payton left work Friday, he made sure to tell GM Mickey Loomis that they could not be forced into overpaying for Jeremy Shockey. New Orleans' offer -- either a two and a six this year, or a two this year and a five next year -- just wasn't enough for the Giants.

A shame. Shockey will be an unhappy distraction for the Giants. I really thought they should have traded him. --Peter King

Re: shockey to saints trade stalls.. Update on Pg 11

Sounds like more than a fair offer for a guy returning from injury and unhappy at the same time. Combine that along with what the current trade market is concerning draft picks and I say the Giants made a mistake.
