The next time you get sick of some player – Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis comes to mind – grousing about his contract, think about New Orleans running back Deuce McAllister.

The Saints all-time leading rusher, who accepted Reggie Bush and splitting his role without complaint, blew out his knee for the second time in three years last season while trying to help the Saints win a game.

His reward: The Saints restructured his contract.

The $1 million bonus he was supposed to receive has been converted to incentives. If he fully recovers, he'll get the money that his contract originally said he was supposed to receive. If there are complications, then he won't.

That's why a player should do whatever they must do to get paid. Hold out? Fine. Force a trade? That's OK, too.

There is no loyalty in the NFL. A contract means nothing in the NFL. It's a year-to-year deal. That's how management treats it, and that's how players should, too.

By the way, have you heard the moral outrage over McAllister's contract? Of course not. People seem to always hold employees to a higher standard than companies.

if you put loyalty into business, you will go bankrupt...the nfl is a business...as a coach, i can tell you that even at the high school level you go with players that give you the best chance to win and not just the nicest or best student athletes...you just hope that your best athletes are also your best students and people

so deuce is a great guy and an awesome teammate, if the coaching staff and front office believe that having deuce on the team will be holding them back, then sorry deuce, but it is your time to move on...we love you and best of luck in all your future endevours.

That hurts to even think that. I own a biz, and I just fired a gal thats been with me for a few years ( Great Lady!!) but she wont help me get more biz...sorry but its all about the money...in the NFL..its all about the WINS..DOOOOOOOOOOOOOce, I dont care if you stay or go, I would like to win though..sorry, but thats how I feel.

NO loyalty?
I see this as the ultimate form of loyalty...
Where else could Deuce play?

NO WHERE

As of today, The Saints are still paying him... should they have cut him, then no one would have paid him...
In fact, as far as I have read, the new contract will reap Deuce the exact same amount of money as the original contract...

Has the bonus been restructured??? I know it was pushed back but nothing about restructured... anyone hear something else?

Unless one of your teammate's father builds an air conditioned locker room, like was the case at the school I attended. This guy's son got to play QB although there were a couple other guys on the team that would have given us a better chance at winning.

I agree that players should do what they can to get paid - especially since careers are so short and contracts can be terminated at almost any time. The only time it bugs me is when a vet holds out or starts a media fight about more money and then gets the new contract only to pull the same stunt two years later for even more money. It gets a little old when you're talking bout someone who makes millions of dollars.

Great points

To me this shows both sides doing the right thing. The team has basically said, "You are not the same player who signed the contract, but we will give you a chance to earn your money." Deuce saw it as the best deal he was going to get, and took it.

Duce is not dumb. He knew contract re working was going to happen when he signed the deal. Thats why he got the cash up front. Thats why they all do. This team kept Fred Thomas on the roster all of last year and he did next to nothing and got paid very well to be a cheerleader and keep an eye on the water boy. We even cut a CB from the draft to keep him. David Jones rings a Bell? He was signed by the Bengals to a 3 years deal 24 hours after getting cut. Heck he could have done that job at a cheaper price. So as far as the loyalty bit goes I think the saints have done some stupid things in the name of loyalty.
It is a buisness and no ones perfect but the FO has done its part for some players during the past two years.
