What do u think about Hester?

Would anybody b for drafting Hester if he is there in the third? I have seen mocks that have him going befor that but how do you think he would do on our team?

zachsaints52 04-19-2008 08:33 AM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

A back up FB and a 4th string RB for the 3rd round? I haven't seen him in the top 3 rounds before. I always heard 5-7.

jtsaints 04-19-2008 08:38 AM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

would you like to see him taken then? i wouldnt want him in the top 3 for sure and im not sure he will even become a very good nfl player. he was great at lsu though.

cgctobe 04-19-2008 08:39 AM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

I would take him in a minute in round 3.....He would be really good in the red zone or on 3rd and short when you need a tough 1 or 2 yards for a first.

zachsaints52 04-19-2008 08:41 AM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

In 5-7 and we cover our Defense then yeah I would like for us to get him. Make him a gunner on punt team and blocker on punt return and do some kickoff. Can play RB/FB in a pinch to.

Re: What do u think about Hester?

Do you think he will make a good pro? do you see his game looking like alstot's?

zachsaints52 04-19-2008 08:50 AM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

Alstott was 6-1 248, Hester 5-10 226. Alstott was one of the last fullbacks utilized for running the ball. I think he will be more of the Steve Gleason type. And 3rd round? When other backs who are better at being a true RB is still available?

BRSaintsFan 04-19-2008 09:00 AM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

I agree that he does not compare to Alstott. Alstott was a bruising runner who relied purely on contact to gain yards. While Hester is a good short yardage back, his feet are much quicker than Alstott's but he also doesnt have the straight ahead take on blocking ability that Alstott had. Ive seen some comparison to Nick Goings in terms of skillsets (I think he has the potential to be a better pro). He will be a phenomenal special teams player. Hes a jack of all trades much like Brian Leonard from last year but I dont think he is at that level. He will certainly make contributions to a team that uses him effectively. I think his best role aside from special teams is a 3rd down back in a 2RB Shotgun set or other passing set for that matter. He can pick up the blitz, take a draw or even screen, and catch the ball in the flats. He will consistently get positive yardage on plays but isnt a big play threat in the pros. He will find his nitch on some team - however, I think his fit for the Saints would be on special teams and as a short yardage back. But I would not take him as early as the third. More like the 5th IMO.

If we can get him in the latter rounds, it would be cool!

Re: What do u think about Hester?

Yeah whats up with the BS comparing him to Alstott I just don't get it? I understand people have their agenda's and love a certain player but come on... don't build hype! I'll take a gamble with thim in the 6th round but we need another RB on our roster like we need another CB on our roster.

i think he will be an awesome special teams player for someone... thats about it...

I really like Hester, but FB is definately not one of our needs. We already have a beast of a FB in Karney.

Euphoria 04-19-2008 02:18 PM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

Don't get me wrong I like the guy but Alstott? Please. I don't know about special teams either pretty soon people will be comparing him to Guido Merkins. LOL.

...and Smith replaced Lorenzo Neal, who went on to star in several Pro Bowls at FB. Let's just break the cycle now....keep your stud FB (Karney) & use your draft choices wisely. We don't need another FB! :)

Re: What do u think about Hester?

Would we even be talking about Hester if he hadn't of gone to Evangel and LSU? There's alot of regional bias with this kid and I hate to be the one to break the news but, Hester is not a NFL caliber player. He'll get a cup of coffee on special teams and then he'll be out of the league in a couple years.

I agree its a LSU bias. Look I'll take Dorsey for you guys but lay off Hester.

Re: What do u think about Hester?

Hester is a back that can backup more than position. thats about it. Special teams demon? maybe.

Euphoria 04-20-2008 04:06 PM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

See I think he needs to be compared to Guido Merkins not Alstott.

Yeah how recalls Guido???

ScottF 04-20-2008 04:36 PM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

I think he might be a good fit for somebody, but we don't exactly use a FB much, certainly not enough to give up a roster spot for a back up. He might be a 5-6 for some team, but a 7 or FA for us.

Did he play ST in college at all? just curious

FireVenturi 04-20-2008 07:11 PM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

Yea, I would consider him in the 7th with the hope of some short yardage runs and contribution on special teams. you guys that say we are only talking about him because of his link to la are right!!!

Frederick Smith 04-21-2008 08:57 AM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

Hester is the type of player that can be used in a variety of ways as relief in the backfield, special teams or possibily as a Tight End. Has the mentality to even switch to a defensive role. Would be an interesting prospect and I would be pleasantly surprised for the Saints to take Him late and see how Payton would utilize Him

Re: What do u think about Hester?

I loved watching him play, I think he would be great for the Saints. But were pretty deep at RB, and Karney at FB, just don't know where he would fit in.

Agreed. He will be a good player wherever he goes, but there is no fit for him here unless you are willing to part ways with Stecker and/or Thomas. He can not be an every down blocking fullback and does not have the capability to fill Karney's role on a consistent basis.

no. I disagree with you.

listen, I don't really watch college football. I caught the Auburn game on TV this past season, then watched the BCS championship with a couple of friends. thats about it. I really have no bias because this kids from LSU, so here is my honest opinion:

he'll be a great pro. he'll be an amazing pro. not in the sense that he'll be a pro bowl player for 10 years because hes not that kind of guy, but this IS a steve gleason type character guy who can contribute in a number of different ways. hes the guy that you'll see in the huddle before the game getting the rest of the team pumped up and ready for the game.

he's actually ALOT like gleason, except he'll be able to contribute a bit more on the football field. I don't think he's a fit for the Saints (not because we don't need him, btu because we need to focus on defense for the first 3 rounds and he won't last past round 4), but whoever gets him is getting a great character guy who will be invaluable in the locker room.

trust me.

Euphoria 04-21-2008 02:45 PM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

I am starting to turn the corner on him... I think I would give up a 6 or 7th to get him. I mean anyone related to Terry Bradshaw can't be all that bad.

We need players like Guido Merkins or Hokie Gajan. I can see Hester at Center, Guard, WR, TE, FS, hell lets let him kick field goals and PAT's for us from time to time just for the fun of it. I also thing we can use him as a 3rd QB even.

BiggieX 04-21-2008 03:03 PM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

I would love to see Hester be picked up by the Saints however I don't feel this is realistic. I do believe that he is deserving of the opportunity to have a chance to play in the NFL. He will make it on special teams and be an impact player. Hopefully this can lead him to greater opportunities.

Hester is solid and knows how to hit the holes unlike some dancing running backs. I hope he is able to get a chance somewhere to show this.

BRSaintsFan 04-21-2008 05:17 PM

Re: What do u think about Hester?

Again, I think he will certainly get a shot especially after running better than expected during workouts. But he will have to find a Brian Leonard type niche on the right team as he is by no means a full time FB. He wasnt even used as a FB much in college as he had Quinn Johnson blocking ahead of him last season. But he will be a valuable 3rd down back albeit not a scat back for some team.

for all u hester freaks..

Chat with former LSU FB Jacob Hester

Hester is the 3rd-ranked FB in the draft.Welcome to The Show! On Friday, NFL prospect and LSU FB Jacob Hester will stop by to chat about the NFL draft and his time with the Tigers.
Hester started every one off LSU's 27 games in his final two years. The last two seasons he has led the Tigers rushing attack. In 2007, he had a team-high 1,103 yards and 12 TDs. In 2006, he led the team with 440 rushing yards. Over the past two seasons Hester has also had 39 catches out of the backfield.

According to Hester's Scouts Inc.'s draft profile, Hester "plays the game with great intensity and he has the perfect mental makeup to contribute on special teams in the NFL. While he will never star in one area of the game, Hester finds many different ways to earn his keep, which is why he will likely reward a team for believing in him as a late-round pick."

Send in your questions now, then join Hester on Friday at 3 p.m. ET!

Buzzmaster: Jacob should be here soon, everyone!

Buzzmaster: We've got Jacob!

Jacob Hester: Hey everyone!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kevin (Virginia): What have you been doing to train for the draft?

Jacob Hester: Before the combine, I was out at API working out. I'm back in my hometown, working out at my old high school right now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jonny (NY): Do you think you'll play FB or RB in the NFL?

Jacob Hester: I think I'll play both, just like I did in college. Every team I've talked to has mentioned that to me. It'll be similar to what I did at LSU.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hank (Miami): How fun was it winning the BCS title game this year?

Jacob Hester: It was even more special winning it this year, with the way the season went. It was so crazy, so it makes it more special.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mark H. (Bowling Green, OH): Would you rather blow up a linebacker on a block or run for a TD?

Jacob Hester: I'd have to say blowing up a linebacker. A lot of people can score touchdowns, but not many people can punish a guy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sam (Boston): We didn't see much of JaMarcus Russell last season. How good of an NFL QB do you think he can be?

Jacob Hester: I think he can be one of the best. He definitely has all the physical tools, and I think they did the right thing in letting him sit back and learn the game.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paul (Pa.): how much of a distraction was the coach Miles situation toward the end of the season?

Jacob Hester: Coach Miles never really let it be a distraction. He told us we would hear rumors, but they wouldn't be true.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brad (Gadsden,Alabama): Jacob, Where is the toughest place to play in the sec other than death vally? im a alabama fan and i just want to say congrats on representing the sec and winning the bcs championship good luck in the nfl

Jacob Hester: Thank you. I'd say the toughest places would be Alabama or Florida. It's similar to what I play in at home. All SEC stadiums are tough to play in, but those stand out.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jacob (Syracuse): Great name 1st off, not many Jacob's around. Why should you get drafted, what attributes will you bring a team?

Jacob Hester: I'm just a football player, plain and simple. When I get the pads on, it's totally different from workouts. I think teams will watch my tape and see it as the biggest selling point for me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Digger (DC): What's been your best game?

Jacob Hester: I think my best game was the Florida game this year. They kept calling my number on fourth down, and I was fortunate to keep getting them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Merlin (MN): What are your plans for Draft day?

Jacob Hester: Every year, I usually watch it at my house. But I'll be nervous this year, so I think I'm going to go play a little golf.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jacob (Syracuse): Jacob, you remind me so much of Rob Conrad (Cuse grad) RB/FB,Would you prefer to be in a 1 back set or play in a 2 back set?

Jacob Hester: I've always preferred playing in a two-back set. I've liked being the fullback in the I set. There are pros and cons to both, but my favorite is definitely the two-back set.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike: Pensacola, FL: What do you think LSU's chances are of repeating with the current QB situation?

Jacob Hester: It's tough to repeat in any sport, especially college football. They'll work it out, and if they don't, they have three stud RBs that they can use.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D (MI): Coming from a school that produced tons of NFL talent and also being related to Terry Bradshaw it would seem that you tons of knowledge of the challenges at the next level at your disposal. My question is what is the best advice you have gotten so far? Whom was it from?

Jacob Hester: Joseph Addai told me the game is faster in college, but he also said I played in the best league to prepare for the NFL. It'll still be a challenge.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fred (Atlanta): what makes LSU a consistently good program?

Jacob Hester: Obviously you have to get good recruits, and the school just sells itself--the stadium, fans, coaching, tradition--it's a different place. Everyone who has played at LSU tells me they've never played at anywhere quite like it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Larry (Charlotte): how do you react to the critics who say you're too small to play in the NFL? I think they're crazy.

Jacob Hester: It's something I've always heard. Coming in to college, I was the lowest-rated recruit in my class, but the first one to play. There are doubters at every level, but I like it that way. I think I'll prove them wrong again at this level.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Merlin (MN): Jacob, You look awfully good in purple. Have the Vikings made any contact with you? You seem like an ideal fit for a West Coast Offense.

Jacob Hester: I did talk to them at the Senior Bowl and then at the combine. I may try to set up a visit later this week. They seem interested, but every team seems interested, so you never quite know.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kyle (Kansas): If you hadn't gone to LSU where would you have gone?

Jacob Hester: Probably Texas. I actually committed there before I went to LSU.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Merlin (MN): Who's your favorite RB of all-time?

Jacob Hester: I'd have to say Rocky Briar from the Pittsburgh Steelers. That guy played hard-nosed all the time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nick NJ: Do you have anyone working out with you at your high school or are you training by yourself?

Jacob Hester: Right now, by myself, because there aren't many prospects out of my city. But my good friend Jon David Booty will be in town soon, so we'll hang out before the draft.

Jacob Hester: Thanks for having me, and it's been a pleasure.

I don't mean to be a jerk... but did you guys even watch Hester run this year????

Not a contact runner???

Not a Bruiser???

Short Yardage only????

You may want to go back and watch his games this year guys.

I won't say his an Alstott, just because Hester has never played an NFL snap. However, I will say he is Alstotts NCAA mirror image. I really doubt anyone (who likes/loves LSU) was worried when the ball was in his hands. So give the kid SOME credit.

Anyway, No, I wouldn't take him. We just don't need a FB, right now. I think he would just be taking up a roster spot on THIS team. I think he would be best served on another team, as far as his career goes.

I believe if anyone was a Alstott image, it would be this guy.

Jehuu Caulcrick, Michign State

In 13 games as a senior, Caulcrick ran for 872 yards and 21 touchdowns (seventh in the NCAA) on 222 carries (3.9 average).

Re: What do u think about Hester?

Honestly I was gonna try and discredit Hester because he had more carries, but I see now that they were equal. Alstott 6-1 249 Calcrick 6'0 253. Hester 5'11 222. Alstott and Calcrick were situational rushers when only in the red zone while Hester was used every play. Personally I think Hester shouold go to a west coast offense that can use him to run catch and pass, while traditional offense he would just block.

Thank you kindly Pakowitz for the Hester update. I look foward to seeing Hester play on Sundays, no matter which team or position, well, as long as he doesn't go to the Falcons... lol.
