YES....im impressed to see someone else taking this stance with me...i talked earlier about mark brunell retiring as a saint and that would move palko into the 2 position..if he trains under brunell who is a great passer....and then under drew who is a freaking genious when it comes to reading Ds...Palko will start with great knowledge and great understanding of the game....according to John Madden in Madden '07....90% of the game is half mental lol

Aren't you worried what message that sends to the team?

The fact that Brunell was brought in means Palko's days are numbered. -I hope we see the last of Martin.

We probably won't carry 3 QB's this season, so you have to do the math.

i didnt say he wasnt a good mentor....but while brunell and palko are on the sidelines watching drew...tyler will get more lessons from brunell...and then when he retires palko will know what his role is as the future of the Saints....they didnt sign palko just to get rid of him....mark brunell's days are numbered....i see him retiring by 2010 and palko will be there when he does

martin wont make it past training camp....he will be a practice squad qb....maybe...thats if he manages to impress the coach even that much

Palko is a coaches son. Are we forgetting this? If any back up should understand the need to listen and study it should be him. He has been doing this all of his life. I feel very good with sean choice and the direction he wants to go in. what ever that may be

QB's aren't hired to give lesson's. They are hired to be QB's and back up QB's. What Palko does with his time is up to him.

Palko signed on perhaps as a camp body. Don't get me wrong I like him... and I though he should have been on the roster last year in place of Martin. THey cut Palko last year so yes they will cut him again if they need to. He'll get cut at the start of the season and if no one picks him up he'll be put on the practice squad again. This will be the last year he can be kept on the practice squad if no one else picks him up that is.

QB's are hired to play....giving lessons is just the bonus that comes along with being a starter or a veteran....when u bring in a rookie they study, so to speak, under the vets....Palko has talent...plus the knowledge he'll gain from brunell and brees will push him into a starting role...if another team gets him he can and will start in the future for them

Ok put aside your obvious man crush on him for a second and come back to reality. He was cut last year by the Saints. If they were so into him they wouldn't have done that. He was resigned because we need 4 QB's in camp. Based on Paytons past 2 seasons, he's keeping only 2 for the regular season... you tell me who is getting cut??? Yeah looks like Martin and Palko. Palko again gets signed to the practice squad (maybe). Martin could be signed back on at anytime if the sky falls on us during the season.

He isn't the future #1 QB at this time. I just don't see it at all.

You may also want to look back at Brett Farve's comments this past year... He also said he isn't a mentor. Its up to the QB to learn and all its not up to the other QB's to coach them up.

while my man-crush is obvious...it is obvious also that payton will not give up on youth...he likes young players because they allow him to be more creative...sean payton is one of the nfl's best play designers...i know u think that they will have only 2 qbs its very possible that they could have 3.....we both agree that jamie is on his way out...the only descrepency is whether there will be a 3rd string qb or not

I wouldn't say VERY POSSIBLE, but I would say anything is possible. The fact that you use youth to prove your point makes the statement not true at all. Martin is far from being YOUTHFUL and he has hung on to that #2 spot for a while now. I think Payton likes to have maturity in the back up position at QB, that is more true than your youth argument. Also the fact that Brunell is onboard and likely to be the #2 QB this season instead of Palko makes the youth point go out the window.

But I will agree that 'anything is possible'.

i think that it was well worth it to pick up mark brunell as a backup....he is proven as a starter but because drew is better he wont start...given that mark's tank is almost empty i just think its more likely that they keep a 3rd qb...whether it be jamie martin or tyler palko is debatable....i agree with peanut tho....payton has a tendency to coach up younger players....he did it for romo who had question marks about whether he could start long term....palko is another no-name and could be just another romo rising through the saints depth chart

Actually Payton is the one following in Tuna's footsteps. The Tuna didn't want Romo to start, wasn't ready. Perhpas starting the reasons he is gone and done in Dallas. Tuna kept to the older mature QB's over the younger ones... and this seems to be holding true for Payton.

If Payton was so deadset on 'grooming' a young QB he would be on the active roster, on the sidelines each and every week. Not at home in t-shirt and underwear watching the games on tv.

Perhaps this will change soon but right now I don't see Payton really keying in on grooming a QB of the future. I feel it was by chance Romo happened not because they made it happen.

Nobody will argue that romo was an unlikely starter.....but now we know how good he is.....and by no means am i comparing tyler palko to tony romo...that would be dumb....Drew has secured the starting position for years to come and i agree with that it is not a question mark for the saints....but i do have to ask...how many more years do u believe mark brunell will play?....this seems to be where our argument lies....i think payton wants to keep palko but you think that bringing in brunell only guarentees palkos fait as an ex-saint

Ahhh now things are more clear. The subject title and earlier posts indicate Groom to be the starting QB.

I have no guess, I think he should have hung it up at least 2 years ago along with Martin however Payton still feels better going with age over youth as his back ups. Lets just say for argument sake he lasts only one season - Palko doesn't get picked up by another team this offseason and we sign him yet again to the practice squad. Offseason comes around and we get him back on the roster. So know you have Brees, Brunell and Palko. Payton goes out and brings in a 4th QB who by just going by histroy he has shown as a head coach is going to be another aging QB, who may very well take Burnells spot leaving Palko cut again. But this time here is the kicker... Palko can not be signed to the practice squad. By NFL rules you can only be on a teams practice squad twice. So he will definately be looking for greener pastures by then without having a jobby job. Another team may end up picking him up this season.

Again we all know anything can happend and I hope the best. Hell I hope he comes in and does so well he makes the #2 spot, that is the ideal situation honestly. But histroy doesn't dictate that so far.

If coach see something in Palko he'll be around for a while. if he doesn't see anything in the kid he gone.

i think palko is a definite 3rd string for this season....i think brunell will retire and palko will eventually be in line to compete for the starting position

not sure if this means anything as i have never played QB and do not know the nuances of the position, but both are lefties. maybe that doesnt help that much for palko learn from a quality lefty, but it certainly couldnt hurt
