VIKES BREAK THE BANK FOR ALLEN

In addition to the three 2008 draft picks that the Minnesota Vikings gave up in order to acquire the rights to defensive end Jared Allen, the Vikes have made defensive end Jared Allen the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.

Per Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com, Allen will get a six-year, $74 million deal, with $31 million in guaranteed money.

Actually, the guarantee is $31,000,069. That’s right . . . “Wine ‘em, dine ‘em, 69 ‘em.”

The deal surpasses the deal paid a year ago by the Colts to defensive end Dwight Freeney, with $30 million guaranteed on a six-year, $72 million contract.

The risk that the Vikings are taking is huge, given Allen’s history with the whole glug-glug, vroom-vroom thing. But it’s apparent that the Vikings have done plenty of homework, and are comfortable that Allen’s drinking days are behind him.

Holy crap.

The Vikings, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, surrendered their first-round pick in the 2008 draft and both third-round selections for Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen.

The Chiefs will now add the No. 17, No. 73, and No. 82 overall selections to the No. 5, No. 35, and No. 66 picks, giving them six selections among the first 100 picks.

Will Smith is thinking....cha-CHING, whether I stay with the Saints or go elsewhere!

Smith is clean and less of a risk but he has not put up Allen's #'s. big difference. Smith could end up with the same kind of contract but he will never get that kind of guarantee and it would be for 9 years not 6. The vikings are crazy. They have just killed the cap over the need for DE. In that system he will be great. But 9 million a year great? absolutely nuts. But now with all this fire power in the draft I am looking forward to seeing how the Chiefs use it.
Shame they are 5th. baring a complete mental break down of the 4 other teams picking ahead of them I do not see a player worth reaching for. I would not be surprised to see them move down from 5 and still get more picks.
Brian Brohm at 17? Tampa at 20 is a big possibility to take him. It is a strange place to be picking for the chiefs. According to team needs they are once again on the tail end of the talent rush for DL and OL.

KC has multi picks in rounds 3, 4, 6 and 7. This should be fun.

Wonder what Brown could bring on he open market. Are we deep enough at tackle to take the risk? maybe next year

Smith isn't on the same level as Allen... not saying that he won't be in the future, but his deal should put his deal in perspective. I think Smith gets something midway between Grant's and Allen's deal in guaranteed money.
