First Day Grade...

I love our draft so far and I'd give the first day an B+ grade. We managed to come away with a blue chip DT in Ellis and a solid CB prospect in Porter. Also we still have the players that were mentioned in possible trades. I'd much rather have Ellis and Porter and still have J. Brown and W. Smith than have Dorsey but no Brown or Smith. As far as Shockey goes I think we were smart to not give in the the Giants and give them an arm and a leg. I think that the Giants thought we would buckle and give them the moon for Shockey. We didn't and now N.Y. might be stuck with a guy that does not want to be a Giant.

How would you grade the first day?

Re: First Day Grade...

I give it an A-. We fulfilled a glaring need at DT with Ellis, and I think Porter could end up being a steal with his athletic ability and speed and adds youth and depth to our secondary. The rest of the team has stayed intact, so this makes the first two rounds extremely successful.

Re: First Day Grade...

I'll go with the B+. maybe even A-
We didn't overpay for Ellis, and Porter should be great on ST until he develops. If we had drafted Talib, DRC, or McElvin, we'd be looking at a nickel or dime back with a top ten pick.

Thanks to Vilma, I'll give you my Day 2 draft grade now:

A+

Re: First Day Grade...

Well i agree. We did well. We did not over reach and we got positions we needed. I am starting to like the look of our secondary. We are getting younger and hopeful better.

Harper, Gay, Young, Porter

B
Ellis is Oregon's kid so it was easy to see it coming.
porter was a solid pick.

Yeah, so hopefully that means Ed knows Ellis' character and work ethic and that was convincing enough to get him drafted

Re: First Day Grade...

A. The grade would've been an A+, but I think we offered too much during the Dorsey trade. But that's the only gripe I have - a very very rare thing indeed for LoE to have only one nit-picking complaint at the end of Day 1.

Anyway, IMO, we upgraded the right positions, at the right price, with the right people, in the right order. In fact I'm very happy with these picks. The front office showed aggressiveness when it needed to, and restraint when it needed to.

Great Day 1!

Best available at the time? Hell, this kid may be the best man coverage corner out of all of them! He's a PERFECT fit here. My only concern is he'll probably need a year (or two) with the weights before we can start him. But mark my words, in 2 or 3 years, people will learn this kid's name. I really think he's got the potential to be something special. You heard it here....

A+ if you add on our pre-draft trades! Im pleased so far and are defense is looking alot better. What more could you ask for? Keep in mind that Shockey has never played a 16 game season due to injuries, so dont worry so much about us not getting him. We got a CB with HANDS and SPEED! wow, when was the last time we had one of those?

Must be a Jets fan. They are never pleased.

Re: First Day Grade...

I don't think the Shockey trade is dead. I think the Giants know he is dead weight. I think we still acquire him for a super bargain, because the Giants have no choice. Just a feeling. I felt like before draft day 1, we were a pawn move away from being contenders. I feel like the FO knew how good we are and made the aggressive adjustments to make this team great.

while i think that ellis was a great pickup for only a 3rd rounder and our 1st rounder....i hate that the saints did not trade up to get brandon flowers who i really think would compliment our defensive backs a lot better....i think that we were holding on to the shockey trade for too long....i thought for a second we might miss our pick...i think it got down to 24 seconds or so....i think they wanted shockey....and after a week of the hype...i kinda wanted us to get him too....i like our 2nd pick but i think that had we known shockey wouldnt be traded to us we might have tried to move up and get brandon flowers

Ahh... but that remains to be seen. I'll agree with you about DT - Dorsey is my pick too. I think he's the best DT to come along in years. But give it time... I can't wait to see how Porter develops. He may end up being the best man coverage guy out of this draft class. Let's check back in a couple years.

Re: First Day Grade...

C+...i like ellis and i think his strength will turn out to be a great addition seeing as how he is one of the strongest players in the draft....i think he needs some work on his feet movement off the snap...while he is very fast off the ball he still struggles with his feet placement and getting them underneath him...i love that pick....however i think we dropped off heavily after we didnt pick a top 5 corner....we could have had ne of them and we got none of them

Re: First Day Grade...

we didnt give into the demands of KC or NY and give up too much for Dorsey or Shockey. Im glad to see we didnt go all in for a certain player. Ellis is a very solid pick. Porter im not so sure about. Ill give day 1 a B, on paper our defense is much better than it was 24 hours ago.

Re: First Day Grade...

I have no clue why there is so much boo-hooing over not getting a top-5 corner when we got one of the premier DT's in the draft. With that happening, it's a no-brainer that we weren't getting one of those corners. Porter may not have all the hype attached to him that the other corners did, but I'm going out on a limb that he is going to a be a solid corner for this team for quite a while.

Re: First Day Grade...

well yeah that is exactly what happens when your not picking first, you generally can not demand the top pick. Yes when your picking 10th, as Kurtis Blow once said, them is the breaks.
Every year we sit here and scream and holler that we are not drafting need, or we did not draft the right guy, we are reaching, or not being aggressive enough. This year we go out and get the guy we need at dt and then turn around and draft a corner, a corner that looks like he could end up being very good. We did not destroy our future in the process either. I can not understand how we as fans can not be at the least, until proven to the other, excited that we did the right thing today. well I guess it just proves you can not please everyone all the time.

Grade: A
Filled needs with excellent players.Liked getting the extra 5th round pick and can move one of the corners over to safety position.

Re: First Day Grade...

I'll go with a B+ for now and that includes having Vilma as our 4th pick.

I'm glad we are filling positions with need and not going for just the best guy on the board.

Re: First Day Grade...

A- so far. I think that the Ellis pick was a fantastic pick, especially considering the price that we paid to get him was swapping a third for a fifth. The Porter pick is not great, but I do think that it's the best possible pick we could have made at that point in time. He helps to address a position of need, and although cornerbacks typically have a learning curve in the NFL, this guy has all of the physical tools to make the leap. Unlike two new CBs last year, Usama Young and Jason David, I think Porter will make a more positive impact. Usama Young came from a small school, and the difference in the level of talent between his school and the NFL probably accounted for his rough rookie season. Jason David came from a cover 2 scheme into a man-to-man scheme, accounting for his struggles. Porter, however, comes from a Big Ten program, playing against top flite talent. He also excelled in a scheme that was almost purely man-to-man. I say it was a great first day.

Well I for one am extremely happy right now.

Re: First Day Grade...

I'll give a grade of B for the stand alone picks today -

It bumps up to B+ when I count the addition of Vilma for a 4th round pick -

I like the Ellis pick - very solid inside man (should help the linebacker play). I'm glad we didn't give up everything to try to get Dorsey. I'm hearing a lot of cheering about Porter having great hands, speed, man-to-man coverage ability . . . but man, did he look scrawny in his pic. He'll be in the weight room for a year before we see him, except on ST!

I'll bump this up to an A- if we can get through this thing without going after Shockey. He's a trainwreck waiting to happen for the Saints lockerroom. I'm glad they didn't give away Harper, our 2nd pick, and who knows what else for this "9-games-a-season" big name.

And finally, I'm glad I didn't hear that old "best athlete available" routine - that would have given us another WR in the 2nd!

Re: First Day Grade...

I give em an A....2nd best Dt in the draft and anywhere from the 4 to 8 Cb in the draft(depending on what expert you ask). Solid picks!!!
