He may already have died - that's an autobot up there talking, ala Hall of Presidents at Disneyworld. The guy looks more cadaverous than Larry King!

Mel was created by the Disney Corp.

ESPN asked Disney to create a draft expert for the ages and that's what they attempted to do. Today you see Disney's creation with only slight modifications.

The original Disney creation for ESPN...

Though he's the antithesis of a football purist, and I often disagree with him, I've nothing but respect for a guy who builds a market for his abilities and maximizes it to the fullest...

Kiper is president of Kiper Enterprises, which he founded in 1981 while in college. It is responsible for all aspects of a series of annual publications including the NFL Draft Report and Draft Preview.[1] Kiper Enterprises continues to operate, offering information about future NFL draft prospects.
With the emergence of ESPN2 and ESPN.com, Kiper's visibility increased. Kiper has said that Ernie Accorsi, the general manager of the then-Baltimore Colts, encouraged him to become a draft analyst. He says that Accorsi told him that there was a market for draft information and that Kiper should convert his expertise into a business.

Here is how you deal with the guy. You only listen to him twice a year... one right at the end of the season. All the BS between then and the day before the draft is just that BS.

I have never seen him come from behind the desk, maybe he is fake. LOL

I got to hand it to Kiper though a lot of what he said from the begining of the off season (minus the middle BS) till the day before and draft day panned out.

He even made a ballsy call that he would leave the set and take his hair gell with him if Matt Ryan was there at the Ravens pick to Shay. Shay claiming he would or could be there and Kiper was giving Shay crap from some of his none sense.

Not a Kiper fan but don't hate the guy either. At least from what I can tell this year he was on his game.

People only hate him because he comes across as being the MR. Know it all. But he backs it up.

If you have a problem with Mel Kiper Jr then you have a problem with yourself. Mel Kiper Jr is the draft, period. Who cares if he's a robot, all robots should be so helpful. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the two best experts ESPN has are Kiper and Peter Gammons. They have their niche and they are the best at what they do.

Having said that, my God Mel looked like Satan this year! Did anybody see him glaring like a lunatic when he had the showdowns with Todd McShay?

I loved it actually. Mel has been doing this as a career for so long and knows so much, if you ask him top prospects for next year he'll start going down the list - he is good.

It was like McShay (new kid) trying to knock on ol' Mel and Mel not going to let him do it. "IF MATT RYAN IS THERE AT 9, I WILL WALK OFF THE SET AND TAKE MY HAIR GELL WITH ME". Pretty strong words. But that goes to show you Mel knew what the hell he was talking about and McShay isn't in the same league.

I also like the expression of everyone else on set... like what the hell are we going to do if it happens there is a lot of time Mel has for the next two days who is going to take up the slack.

Respect for Melvin.
We all know who he is and discuss him ad-nauseum.
His predictions and analysis of players is as hit-or-miss as our own.
We all discuss the same things that he does.
The difference is that he gets paid very, very well for his thoughts.
Without the chance to "Hate on" Melvin this time of year wouldn't be the same to me.
Kind of like Dick Vitale.
I say: "God bless Eddie Munster Kiper!"

Agreed. hit or miss. what I do not like the arrogance he has about him. he just comes across as person who is a little Hitler. I hate debating those types. I like a good debate and discussion. i could care less about being called out. To me it seems he takes it a personal assault. Listen up Mel this is football not life.
He needs to give some credit to his research team. He does not do it alone. But he is good at what he does. but there are others just as good or even better

Hagan you're right about Mel as far as his prediction % goes but that's not what he's about. Nobody can do what Mel does as far as his character at the draft. He's the guy people love to hate but they listen when he talks. He is just a character who found a niche. You look at a guy who's got great hair and know's how to use it. At the end of the day he's a guy who could probably talk about the draft until he died or Jesus came back. When you look at a guy like Mel Kiper Jr you have to like what you see because at the end of the day he's got the goods.

Screw Mel. I used to love listening to him but I had to turn off ESPN this year. He and that fat boy, Chris Berman, made me sick to my stomach. The draft coverage was horrible at best. As far as Mel goes, he is a has been. He did not say anything that I can remember that was insightful about the players being drafted.

I think people miss the point of a mock draft. Generally speaking they're telling you who the teams SHOULD pick as opposed to who they will pick. So the more relevant statistic would be performance of the players that they ranked highly, and how the teams are doing with the guys they took.

As for Mel, love him or hate him, he's part of the draft, just like Hank Jr is part of MNF. And when he says you're the best at your position, you just made a few extra hundred grand, at least.
