Who's Days are numbered?

Do you guys think we took Tracy Porter with the thought of putting him at deep safety. His obvious strengths are speed and ball skills, something we sorely lack at FS at this time. Also, his weaknesses are physicallity and his abilility to tackle. This doesn't sound like what we need a CB. I am really wondering if with our free agency class and our draft if Josh Bullocks and Jason David are on their way out the door. I think that with McKenzie, Gay, Young, Porter and Craft that neither one of those guys makes the final roster this year. I can only dream I guess.

Craft is a goner.

Moore, Orien Harris, too.

Re: Who's Days are numbered?

His man-to-man skills and speed are way too good to move him to safety. I have mixed feelings on the topic of him not being able to tackle. First, if he can't tackle do you really want him matched up against RB's and TE's? No. Secondly, 80 tackles hardly seems like someone who can't tackle. CB's who move to safety usually make that move because of speed and coverage limitations.

Re: Who's Days are numbered?

Neither Bullocks or David are going anywhere. Porter has great ball skills and might be able to play deep safety in a defense that allows the safety the freedom to roam and play "centerfield", but not here. We pay our corners to cover, not to tackle. His lack of tackling ability is why everyone said that he is not best suited for a Cover 2. Our depth at safety is limited at best and I just dont think Porter can cover it, so Bullocks is a virtual lock. David's status would be up in the air, but they will not let him go after 1 season. He will get a chance to prove himself. MAybe, maybe by midseason, when McKenzie returns, if David is looking as bad as he did last year, then you might see him cut to make room for MM. But I would expect them both to make the roster.

Re: Who's Days are numbered?

I can't see Porter playing safety. He is too young and fast- he will specialize in man coverage. Gay I could see moving to safety. I hope Craft stays, I doubt he will but he totally outplayed David last year. I think Porter and MM play opposite each other come game day. Young in the Nickel. Porter possibly in Nickel, but I have always liked Porter. Think he is big-time playmaker.

Make no mistake about it! Porter was drafted to do what he does best and thats play man coverage as a corner. If he is making tackles on running backs then we have problems!

And let's not forget that MM is not guaranteed. Bullocks stays, much as I hate to say it, though I hope and pray that KK beats him out for the starter. Porter will be a nickel or a dime.

Deion Sanders was bad in run support.

Just sayin'...

how dare you compare tracy porter to one of the best if not the best corner of all time....his speed is elite and 80 tackles is impressive but u dont get knocked for being bad at tackling unless you are in fact...bad at tackling...if somebody runs right at u...ur going to make the tackle eventually

Re: Who's Days are numbered?

I still don't think I've seen anyone (as in scouts) say that Porter is bad at tackling. I've read that he isn't so good in run support, but that is not the same as bad at tackling.

Sanders was terrible against the run; therefore, he was not the best corner of all time.

I agree, there is no comparison, except this: if you can protect your CB from having to play run support, then he can excel, even if he is a bad tackler. Deion is a demonstration of that point.

Re: Who's Days are numbered?

im beginning to believe that as well....if the front seven can keep the run away from our CBs then we will be a great defense this year...i think we brought in players to do that....however....in the playoffs where the O-lines are a lot better and the QBs will have time to throw the ball whether u blitz or not....our CBs will be in trouble...i still dont think we have that solid number one corner...McKenzie rocks but there are even better CBs out there than him....and some were even available this offseason

I am betting if anything it will be an aging vet. The saints are now on a youth movement for the defense.

The best offense in NFL history got tore up but a good front 7 not but great CB's.

Try telling the Patriots that... Patriots lost not because of the Giants CB's they lost because of the immense pressure coming from the Giants front 7. SB before that was the immense pressure from the colts front 7 that beat the Pats and then the Bears.

I don't know if you have been paying attention but we have a CB with a SB ring. Jason David. So if he can get a ring not that long ago being on the Colts then he is capable, all we need to do is learn from the other teams and what they are doing.

our front seven will not blitz....the giants utilized their amazing DEs with blitzing schemes from the linebackers....maybe u missed last season but jason david thought his job was to get beat deep....i dont think we have the talent overall that the giants defense had...and will smith is no michael strahan nor is grant a uminyora(forgive spelling)....the patriots line is an elite line as well as the colts line and the browns and the steelers....we cant put pressure on their QBs like the giants were able to do

CantonLegend 04-28-2008 05:34 PM

Re: Who's Days are numbered?

Our LB's and coaches don't use the LB's as pass rushers that often. Hell they don't utilize anyone as a pass rusher. I don't see them changing blitzing our LB's that much this season either. Thats why they went after a top DT early. Get some big names up front to disrupt and you're LB's play more like safties and chase down runners.

come on man u know that....u said it urself...we cant put pressure on QBs

Re: Who's Days are numbered?

The scouts just said that Porter wasn't overly physical. So what. We don't need an overly physical corner. That just means he won't play S. We need a man coverage corner-that's what we got.

The difference is that the Giants didn't NEED to blitz the LB's to get pressure on Brady. Most of the time they got pressure with the front four. When they brought pressure with the LB's the Lb had a direct line to the QB. This is why they were so effective because they could also drop a Lb into coverage. Brady is an expert at finding the open guy. In blitz packages he knows where to put the ball. When you are getting pressure with 4 and noones open, it created havoc for Brady.

..maybe because Deion was in fact... bad at tackling?
