Saints willing to take character risks in later rounds

The News Star - www.thenewsstar.com - Monroe, LA

We spent a lot of time talking about that,” Loomis said. “Our conclusion was that there wasn’t anything major, a lot of small incidents. Coach Payton talked to him on the phone, talked to him about our concerns and he said the right things.”

Payton said he spent a half-hour talking to Nicks. “I had a long talk with him,” Payton said. “If it wasn’t for those issues, he probably would have been drafted earlier. Now he understands coming here in the environment we have here with little tolerance what he needs to do.”

I hate that so called "character talk". I notice it only means certain players. I could careless if a player is perfect or not. I do not believe that off the field issues, should have anything to do with being on the field.

SR, normally I'm with you. I think that "character" is ambiguous in the extreme.

However, when "character" impacts work ethic, ability to stay out of jail during the regular season, and ability to learn from good coaching, then it matters a lot to me.

I wish people would stop saying "so and so is (or is not) a character guy" and tell me what they mean by that. I like the good guys who can lead by being vocal and passionate, but I just as much like the bad guys who lead by example (kickin' butts on the field and so on). So, as long as the kid is coachable (and won't be missing time for being jailed, to cracked out, or what have you), I don't care much for the character talk.

That said, it would be nice to have players who weren't morally bankrupt, but as far as being a good football player goes, I'm not sure what the connection is.
